OK, I got a guitar (accustic, steel string) for christmas and I need some help learning to play.

Question 1: When the music lists two chords with a / between them (i.e. C/B) , what are you supposed to do?

Question 2: How long before the feeling returns to the tips of the fingers on my left hand?

Question 3: Can anyone recommend a good book for learning folk guitar or accoustic rock?

I'm sure there will be more to come.

1. C/B basically means a C chord, but with the lowest note being a B. C/B specifically is usually a transition between a C and an Am chord.

2. First it'll come back as pain -- this is the difficult transitional stage. When you've been playing for a while (weeks, maybe), then the feeling won't come back. This is a good thing. However, you might want to make sure you use XL strings at the beginning.

3. No idea -- I basically learned to play by ear and with the help of some friends.

Woo-hoo! Congratulations! [Smile]

Okay. Two chord symbols seperated by a slash (say, G/B) mean that it's a G-chord, but with a B base? Make sense? It means that the lowest note in the chord will be a B, not a G. I suggest you find a good chord chart and learn a couple of them at a time. After a while, you'll get the idea and you'll be able to play chords that aren't on your chart, simply because you'll know how they're made. I'm afraid I don't know about any specific book for it, but I do know that several are available. You should ask at a music store, they usually have several.

Also, if you play long enough, the feeling in your fingertips will never return completely. (I hardly even play anymore, so all my calluses are gone, but I still can't feel nearly as well with my left fingers as with my right.) This is a good thing, because it won't hurt anymore when you play. Eventually, you won't even notice anymore.

Darn, Pop beat me to it! [Big Grin]

We should all have a Hatrack Jam Session someday or something.

The way we do it in band class is the guitars play the c chord, while the bass guitar plays b.
Won't work if you are playing solo.

Rules may be different in a band versus as a solo instrument.

[Edit -- you ain't the only one too slow, digger.]

Also got an acoustic guitar for Xmas, still in the burning fingers stage and the painful-sounding Am chord.

I can manage the painful fingers, but I type for a living and my typo rate has skyrocketed...

I'll play the Bass if you need one...So what's the name of the Hatrack band gonna be?

Since this is Hatrack I'd suggest The Knack, but it's already taken...

Singers to the Dead?

I was about to suggest "The Rack", but that name conjures up some unwanted connotations.

'Rack and Roll will never die!

True, as long as we don't develop Racknophobia.

A good book to learn folk guitar : "la guitare à Dadi" from Marcel Dadi or "l'anti-méthode de guitare folk" from Steve Waring (I'm pretty sure they have been translated)

That's a good one.

Anyone have wishes about having a HUGE pianist? *Edit: I was relating to a joke about someone making a wish in front of a hearing-disabled Jinn*

Well, I've been playing for 5.5 years...And I know guitar too!

How about The Queros?

And I'll play backup kazoo.
