I was wondering if anyone knows a software that can scan a local network for shared stuff from other users. I've tried googling, but didn't manage to come up with anything...

Heheheheh.

Actually, I'm surprised windows doesn't have the capability to find network shares automatically. I know on OS X I can find browse shares -- mac shares and windows shares -- without additional software.

You can actually browse shares in Windows, too, through the "Computers Near Me" or "Entire Network" options in Network Neighborhood. Which is why Edgewood uses Group Policy to turn that feature off. [Smile]

I used to use a piece of software called LANster, back when I was on a college network where people were knowledgable enough to share files. The college had a terrible network connection (a single T1 for all resident students), which almost required people to turn inward to the LAN. I used to watch a new movie every Friday because there was that much digital media on the network. Those were the days... [Smile]

At UVM, nobody knows how to use the network save the very few.

You can usually just open Windows Explorer (NOT IE!), go to Tools, and Map Network Drive. Everything that is shared should pop up.

In XP, you can use the "Search" feature to find specific files of any type on a network. Go to search, select all files and folders, click the selection box's arrow, scroll to the bottom and select "browse" Select my network places, then entire network, hit okay. You can then search for files normally, but it will search through the shared files on the network rather than on your own computer.

Edit: This takes forever by the way, but it's a software-less method.
