My favorite comic strip. Bill Watterson was an absolute genius in penning two of the most memorable characters in the comic strip industry. Does anyone else love them as much as I?

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

Hobbes does [Wink]
And I do too.

This is tender, philosophic and funny. It's terrible that a tiger toy strike a poor little boy at his return to home. Yes ! it's a violent strip too ! [Evil]

(poor daddy and mummy...)

I always felt bad for Calvin. He's an hyperactive six-year-old, with dumb parents who ignore his problems, and his only true friend is a toy tiger...

But I still liked the series, though.

Of course, the best funny comic books are Gary Larson's!

"Hey twinky, gimmie that ball."

Um, yes. [Wink] I love Calvin and Hobbes. I have every strip that was ever released. [Smile]

Oh, I don't think his parents are dumb, at all. I think his dad, in particular, is a genius. Except maybe for his obsession with biking. [Wink]

I love Calvin and Hobbes, but I think Berke Breathed's Bloom County was better really the best comic strip of all time.

Ah, but have you memorized every strip every released, Twink?

Welcome to the ranks of the creepily-obsessed fans, if so. [Big Grin]

I sincerely doubt it.

No, but I'm familiar enough that I generally catch references. When something reminds me of a strip I often remember the whole thing, but not always. [Smile]

Calvin and Hobbes RULES! Better than any comic.
It cracked me up when his oatmeal was moving and he attacked it then his mother yelled at the father, "It's your fault! Your stupid chromosome!"

The whole comic was revolutionary, with more relevance than any strip since Peanuts in the 60s.

The visual styles were great, as were the ease with which Watterson brought you back and forth between imagination and reality.

I'm a little fonder of Spaceman Spiff and the Homicidal Jungle Cat.

But, yeah, C&H is okay too.

Wasn't "Calvin & Hobbes" mentioned as part of the General Hatrack Consciousness? If not, it should have been. I really doubt there are many people here who aren't at least familiar with it.

My favorites are when Calvin and his snowmen make commentaries on art.

And the time when his mom tells him that Dad is in the living room starting a fire, so he goes running in and then pauses.... "Oh. In the fireplace."

I still get C&H in my inbox every morning.

You can too by going here and clicking on the link. You have to register for their service and you can only choose one comic for free, but what else would you want anyway.

Calvin and Hobbes comic books are the only comicbooks I own.

In one of the books Hobbes makes a comic book for Calvin's Dad to read. One time when I was younger I made the exact same book.

Calvin and Hobbes is awesome. I love it.

But come on, its by no means the best strip out there. ONE of the best strips, I can accept.

But Foxtrot anyone? The Far Side? Doonsbury? Luanne? Zits? For Better Or Worse?

There are lots of great ones. My personal top list:

1) Foxtrot
2) The Far Side
3) Calvin and Hobbes

All three of them are really close. Foxtrot beats the other two, partially cause its still being written [Razz]

Calvin and Hobbes was great, however I read more of the Cryptoquips over comics... I'm a geek, ok!? ^_^

But, what kind of bugs me is some comic... it's like... Hi and Rover? About a kid and his dog, the comics remind me too much of Calvin and Hobbes, it seems like such an obvious rip off to me... [Dont Know]

sarcasticmuppet, Thanks for the link !! Snow art is as a horror picture show with something absurde and funny. I like too. In Europ, C&H is the knowest american comic strip with Garfield. So i don't know the others strip you quote.
Here, most of strip are from France and Belgium. (and Japan with Manga).
My favorite autors of funny strip is Frankin, the Autor of Spirou and Fantasio, Idées Noires (Dark Ideas), But especially my favorite strip Gaston Lagaffe !
Try it if you can !!

Calvin in Hobbes is the only comic books I've ever bought, and ever read on a somewhat consistent basis. My mood inevitably gets better everytime I read a strip.

I do dig the Far Side comics, too, though. I think I had a Far Side calendar a couple years ago.

From the publisher's site, italics added:

Calvin and Hobbes is unquestionably one of the most popular comic strips of all time. The imaginative world of a boy and his real-only-to-him tiger was first syndicated in 1985 and appeared in more than 2,400 newspapers when Bill Watterson retired on January 1, 1996. More than 30 million of the 17 Calvin and Hobbes books (all published by Andrews McMeel) have been sold. And now, we're pleased to announce that the entire body of Calvin and Hobbes cartoons will be published in a truly noteworthy tribute to this singular cartoon. Composed of three hardcover, four-color volumes in a sturdy slipcase, this edition will include all Calvin and Hobbes cartoons that ever appeared in syndication. This is the treasure that all Calvin and Hobbes fans will seek.

I had all the Calvin and Hobbes books while I was in college only to have them stolen.
Dang thieves.

This came out of the middle of nowhere.....it had become lost in the abyss of no longer posted on threads and I didn't want to go find it........so again I will say I love Calvin and Hobbes....especially Stupendous Man [Big Grin]

Hobbes [Smile] , if all the teasing is what made you stop talking about Annie, I'm sorry it happened. While it was perhaps a teeny bit overboard at times, I always thought it was sweet.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

Thanks ElJay. [Smile] It was what made me stop, thing is, most people don't feel as you do about it. Which is fine, there are plenty of other ways to tell Annie how wonderful and perfect she truely is. Just so long as no one minds if I slip everyonce and a while and say it on the forum (like I just did). [Cool]
