Did you guys see this letter from OSC on the front page? I didn't see that it had been posted....I was rather interested.

I've never popped over to the RPG section of this site, but it seems like it's going to get BIGGER and more involved. Interesting...

Very cool, someone was asking about this just the other day too.

Space Opera pointed that out earlier. I'm very excited. I'm much more into the social element of massively multiplayer games instead of the "hit things, kill stuff, get phat lewt" element.

I'm perfectly happy to wander around looking at the scendery, talking to friends, and role playing. I'm perfectly happy owning a piece of land and farming, as long as it isn't a chore to do in-game. That's an element oft-forgotten in roleplaying games.

That is interesting. Two things turned me off about the 1830's forum as it existed: That no one was supposed to have really cool knacks, and a lot of the scenes read like a romance novel. Well, and I bear the brunt for a third thing: I'm more of a follower than a leader.

Will there be a table-top (pen and paper) variant?
I played a bit of one with a former boss and some coworkers. Pretty interesting. If not, what kind of interface is being planned? What type of graphical engine are we talking? (Isometric, direct top-down, 3D, 3D-iso?)

Well, upon reading more of what OSC said, most of that will be taken care of with eGenesis. I would be interested in doing some artwork or even OpenGL/Direct3D code but it looks as though that isn't going to be needed.

TSH-- most of the folks in the Alvin Maker novels don't have really cool knacks, either.

Given that eGenesis did A Tale in the Desert, I'd guess that it'd be a 3D game, with adjustable camera.

I would probably pay money for a pencil & paper RPG based on Alvin's world, but I am strictly opposed to paying a subscription to play a game.

Paying a subscription would make it so that I feel that I have to play a certain amount each month to get my money's worth. It would become a chore.

[whispers]Second Life (http://www.secondlife.com)...Second Life would be an interesting environment for MMPRORG (whatever) for Ender's Game. Notice the near-identicality of their index pages! Hint, hint![/whispers]

Scott- right, and the books aren't about any of those people. But having the game determine what I can and can't do would make it more interesting for me.

Except, of course, the more I read about Second Life, the more I discover it's riddled with (beset by?) porn of various forms.

Nuts.

I don't know if the paid subscription aspect would weed me out. I guess that's part of the point.

With Second Life (just because I know the teensiest more about it), you pay a $10 fee, one time, up front, and that's it--you're in!

But if you want to buy some land, or design some asset, you have to (in essence) pay to maintain the compute cycles necessary to support this new piece of environment you're adding...there's a monthly payment involved for that.

I played A Tale in the Desert for awhile (on the recommendation of Geoff, actually) and while it was fun, it required a lot of playing time for me to stay current. It was really difficult to be a casual player and do anything interesting. Hopefully there will be more opportunities for casual gameplay in the Alvin RPG.
