Years ago I picked up this really cool, garishly colored knick-knack, which might inaccurately be described as a mask. It's mostly made of plaster (I think it's plaster, anyway. It's definitely plasterish), and when I was unpacking it the other day I discovered that it had broken in several places. I'd like to repair it, but I'm not sure of the best way of going about it. I need to come up with an adhesive that will bond with plaster, and a way of clamping the pieces together that is at once firm enough to hold everything together, and at the same time gentle enough to not harm the thing further. Any thoughts?

For porous substances I generally use Elmers. But I'm not an archivist. And to hold it I'd say wrapping string around works for a lot of irregularly shaped objects. Did you see The Road Home ? The tinker repairs a bowl in that and it seems like he wraps it with string.

I use super glue for plastery sorts of things. How soft is the stuff? Do you worry that it would soak in and change its appearance? For porous surfaces, it's best to wet both sides of the break with the super glue, then hold together for about 30 seconds. Treat it very gingerly for several hours more, the bond does strengthen over time.

Super glue, PVA glue, or Guerilla Glue. If you have a geeky RPG/Tabletop gaming store nearby, I can't reccomend Citadel Miniatures super glue enough. It affixes anything to anything, especially fingers to other fingers and sets slighly quicker than the average wargamer's attention span (5-10 minutes?). It holds a lot better than the cheezy "crazy glue" or "super-duper glue" you find at supermarkets or whatever. Maybe CM superglue has been boiled down like maple syrup.

I just realized that that was a very Vuhmantah thing to say. Syrup?
