Can someone hack me and get my IP address and the whole nine yards in a chatroom?
I know they can in an IM if they know how, but if I am just in a chatroom with someone, can I be hacked?

Depends on the chat room. In IRC (Internet Relay Chat) it's very, very easy. In something like Yahoo Chat!, I'd imagine it would be difficult to impossible.

Also, knowing a person's IP address does not give free reign to their machine. It depends on their operating system and what software/malware is installed on your computer.

Internet Relay Chat..like on, instant messenger? That would be where this chat is.
Umm, what do I need to have on my computer to not get hacked, and if I get hacked, to still be protected?

IRC is not Instant Messenger. IRC has existed forever and will always exist. In many ways, it's the dark alleys on the internet.

If you're interested in it, try googling mIRC. It's a simple IRC client that'll give you a huge list of IRC servers to look at.

Yes, Kaioshin. And I'm terrified. [Angst]
But, alas, I press on.
