I love Jackie Chan. Love him. And I just saw a new commercial he made for garbage bags.

I don't know what's sadder, that he's been reduced to peddling trash bags, or that this ad was better than any movie that he's made in the last five years.

Hey, maybe Jackie's having fun. I don't think doing a few commercials automatically "reduces" someone in some way.

If you'll notice the preposition in the initial post, I didn't say he was reduced by making commercials, I said he was reduced to making commercials.

In other words, it wasn't making the commercials that reduced him; it was making "The Medallion."

He's continually attacking everything about his son (who doesn't respond in kind) in the media while pretending not to have fallen out with him.

It's not that I really have any interest in Jackie Chan's personal life, by the way; it's just always popping up in the local papers.

That's interesting ae--it's completely at odds with his public persona here in the US. He really comes off as one of those "nicest guy in Hollywood" types.

Rush Hour was enjoyable, but Rush Hour 2 was a paint-by-numbers sequel.

But Jackie Chan is still charming and enjoyable, even though the movie as a whole was lame.

But "trashy" doesn't seem to apply, unless I have blocked out parts of the movie from my memory.

Actors appear with product placement stuff in the movies all the time. What's the difference between that, and actors appearing in commericals?

If anything, at least when a commercial comes on TV, you know what it is and can try to avoid it (leave the room, mute the sound, fast forward through it if you've taped it, etc.) In a movie, you can't avoid the product placement commercials they've stuck into the middle of the movie.

It should be a tribute to his popularity that he's getting offers for this stuff. Before Rumble in the Bronx, how many of your average American would've recognized him? And I wouldn't blame Jackie for what's wrong with Hollywood - it's his Hong Kong moviemaking that says 'if it works, make another!' - which is why just anything of his has a sequel.

We're talking about a different ad I believe. The one mentioned here is for the new glad uber-bag. The one two years ago was with the ever annoying high-pitched glad bag woman. As for Jackie being a "nice guy," I don't know what his son did to tick him off, but I'd say that it's probably small potatoes compared to some of the stuff famous people are pulling off these days...
And Jackie's movies, I like them all...Well, the Medalion could have been a lot better. The Tuxedo, had Jackie Chan's action AND Jennifer Love Hewett...who's just plain gorgeous. I'm all for anything with that combo [Wink]

I go see EVERY Jackie Chan movie.

Have you ever seen some of the old ones? The really old ones?

hahahahaha.

They are soooooooooo bad.

But the fight scenes are always amazing. In a post-Bruce-Lee world, he has carved a niche for himself and made, in general, better (more entertaining) martial arts films than anyone.

I didn't know the stuff with his son. Sorry to see people falling out like that. It's worse when it is also public.

Sad.
