George Harrison Somewhere in England. The specific song is Teardrops. Not one of his best, but I don't want to get up and change it. This CD has both the album George Harrison and the album Somewhere in England on it, and I like the first enough to put it on, and don't dislike the second quite enough to get up and change to something else.

quote: Great Nations of Europe -- Randy Newman
The Great Nations of Europe Had gathered on the shore They'd conquered what was behind them And now they wanted more So they looked to the mighty ocean And took to the western sea The great nations of Europe in the sixteenth century
Hide your wives and daughters Hide the groceries too Great nations of Europe coming through
The Grand Canary Islands First land to which they came They slaughtered all the canaries Which gave the land its name There were natives there called Guanches Guanches by the score Bullets, disease, the Portugese, and they weren't there anymore Now they're gone, they're gone, they're really gone You've never seen anyone so gone They're a picture in a museum Some lines written in a book But you won't find a live one no matter where you look
Hide your wives and daughters Hide the groceries too Great nations of Europe coming through
Columbus sailed for India Found Salvador instead He shook hands with some Indians and soon they all were dead They got TB and typhoid and athlete's foot Diptheria and the flu Excuse me - Great nations coming through
Balboa found the pacific And on the trail one day He met some friendly Indians Whom he was told were gay So he had them torn apart by dogs on religious grounds they say The great nations of Europe were quite holy in their way
Now they're gone, they're gone, they're really gone You've never seen anyone so gone Some bones hidden in a canyon Some paintings in a cave There's no use trying to save them There's nothing left to save
Hide your wives and daughters Hide your sons as well With the great nations of Europe you never can tell
From where you and I are standing At the end of a century Europes have sprung up everyone as even I can see But there on the horizon as a possiblity Some bug from out of Africa might come for you and me Destroying everything in its path From sea to shining sea Like the great nations of Europe In the sixteenth century

Peter Gabriel - Downside up
During the winter holiday I saw a concert that he gave in Italy - don't know the year. Maaan, this guy sure knows how to make strange concerts! Besides the fact that he's built like a warrior and his bold head looks scarrier than my fist...
When he sang "Downside up" he and the woman singer in his band were attached to a circular scene above the real one and were actually singing upside down. Or downside up... The woman's long hair pointing towards the ground really made an interesting view!!
"Growing up" was another shock: he got himself into a plastic bubble - actually a bubble into antoher bubble and walked around the scene like that... You could see him inside through the transparent bubbles. And the people from his band were walking aside from his path.
And then you get him riding a bycicle when singing Salisburry Hill...
Or the "don't ajust your television" message during "The Barry Williams Show".
Anyway, I like the normal versions of the songs better than the concert ones, but the set-up was just excellent!
Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :
That's funny, Corwin, because I am such a live music gal. I like the studio recordings, and buy them to support the bands, but give me a good soundboard recording any day.
Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :
Liz, the thing is that all the live versions that he played were a little more "electronically" sounding than the normal versions, and I'm not much into that. Moby aside, that is.
Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :
Corwin, In the past inordinate amount of years, and probably because my husband was/is a huge Dead fan, I tend to go to see live music first, then get the studio versions. Because the bands we like are primarily live bands(as opposed to going on tours every now and then), we hear the songs before they are recorded. I hear what you are saying, though. I used to feel the same way. Many people are disappointed by live music because it is not the same as the cd, or because they do way-out stuff like you dscribed.

Posted by Speed (Member # 5162) on :
The new Chemical Brothers has a lot of really good stuff on it. There are a couple cheesy tracks, mainly marked by the times when they decided to bring in some singularly bland rappers to stand in. Unfortunately, they chose one of these pieces to be the single. Can't figure that one out. As far as new techno goes, I liked the latest Crystal Method album just a bit better. But Chemical Brothers are never bad, and this may not be their best album ever, but it sure isn't their worst. Worth every penny.
I'll be back with the Metheny report, as soon as I have a chance to form an opinion. I love when two good albums are released on the same day.

I've been stimming on the Dolly Parton tribute album "Just Because I'm a Woman" for the past two days.
I am so beyond in love with this album.
Norah Jones singing "The Grass Is Blue" is a favorite, followed closely by Shelby Lynne singing "The Seeker."

Agnus Dei - Polish Requiem by Penderecki. Quite beautiful.
I am also pleased to see there is another Sinead O'Connor fan out there. Her rendition of the Parting Glass is painfully beautiful.

Can we start doing two line lyric excerpts in this thread, as in the game thread, or will it be a copyright violation?
Posted by Corwin (Member # 5705) on :
If it's not copyright violation in the other one it isn't here either. So if you want to put some interesting lyrics from the songs you listen to, by all means do it - max two lines, of course.

Hello there Corwin. Do you enjoy an eclectic mix of music to listen to? I try to listen to a great many types of music so as to broaden my horizons. It has allowed me to be able to truly enjoy a great many types of music. I hope that everyone, and you also, can experience this enjoyment.

I think I'm pretty constant in my tastes... and pretty narrow, I'm afraid. From time to time I try listening to stuff I don't usually listen to, and a couple of times I actually enjoyed the experience. Oh, and much of my "inspiration" came from Hatrack since I've registered here. So, thanks everybody!
By the way, did you check this thread: the music genome? In the first post there's a link to a quite interesting musical project.

I would like to know more.

My taste in music is varied. I like jazz, country, rock, etc. I like everything from Hank Williams to Bauhaus.
Dir en grey mixes elements of metal, techno, and goth in their music. It's very hard to catagorize their music.
I became intrigued after hearing Synesthesia talk about them.

'Here is Gone' - Goo Goo Dolls
I have a playlist entitled "Snow Goo Fray" which consists of my favorite songs by, you guessed it, Snow Patrol, Goo Goo Dolls, and The Fray.

Enae Volare by Era
I recommend this group to Raia since I know she sings. Era is basically this new age techy sort of thing. They usually sing in Latin.

The Beautiful Letdown - Switchfoot Hello Hurricane - Switchfoot How to Train Your Dragon: Soundtrack by John Powell.
My musical tastes have been dominated by circumstance lately. I went to see Switchfoot at a local theater a few weeks ago, even though I only knew a couple songs, and they totally blew me away. A lot of the lyrics just slammed home with me, and the energy at the concert was intense. Thus, I've been pretty hooked ever since.
And earlier tonight I saw HTTYD, which was absolutely 100% adorable and funny. I had major warm fuzzies coming out of that movie. And the soundtrack appears to be top notch as well. It's an equal mix of bombastic battle music (think Pirates of the Caribbean mixed with Star Wars or Gladiator) and softer new agey sort of music (think Sigur Ros for some of it). All in all a decent soundtrack.

I can't stop listening to this song ever since a friend posted the video on their FB page; it's a Portuguese cover (lyrics significantly changed) of a Damien Rice song:
E Isso Ai by Brazilian artists Seu Jorge and Ana Carolina.
