I accepted an offer, by voice mail and letter, at a law firm for next summer on 11/9 or so. The offer had to be accepted by 12/1 - today. I hadn't gotten a reply, so I called the hiring partner just to confirm that he had received my letter. He was nice: we chatted for about 5 minutes, he said he was looking forward to working with me, etc.

They haven't sent out any letters acknowledging acceptances yet, which is fine - they likely want to wait until after the deadline. I was amazed, though, when the partner remarked that no one else had called to confirm their acceptance.

Am I crazy for wanting to make sure they'd gotten my acceptance before the offered expired, and for being absolutely amazed that no one else was worried about this?

I'd say that makes you cautious and prudent - admirable traits in a future lawyer.

Being overconfident gets people slapped down, from time to time.

Words I live by:

quote:
"Just because you're paranoid, doesn't mean they're not out to get you." - Unknown
[Angst]

Personally, I think they killed the author of that quote and erased all trace of his/her identity and authorship.

I agree with Trevor. (Trevor, could you please stop saying things I agree with. It's getting too weird)

Dag, I would have done exactly the same thing in your position.

S'ok Opera - I assure you it's a temporary fluke of the Cosmic alignment and things will revert to their normal behavior patterns after these commercial messages.

At first I was thinking you had accepted by e-mail, and I was going to say you should have used read receipt -- then I re-read and saw you accepted by phone and letter.

I would probably have done the same thing you did -- especially if it meant a great deal to me to be accepted. Maybe everyone else is apathatical, or else December snuck up on them.

That's what I thought. I had no doubt I did the right thing. I was dumbfounded that no one else had.

December sneaks in on little cat's feet, huh?

Man, if I sent an letter on 11/9 and it was important I would have a hard time waiting until 12/1 to call and confirm it was received. So no, I don't think you're paranoid, I think your future co-workers are idiots. But there's no saying I'm just not paranoid, too.

I think you are prudent, not paranoid. I'd do the same.

Perfect paranoia is perfect awareness. Jude Andrews, The Golden Years.

Seriously, I see absolutely nothing wrong and several things right with your calling to reconfirm.

maybe it was a test...they wanted to see who would follow up. [Smile]

so you passed. [Razz]

regardless, congrats on the job

[Angst] I'd be worried about why nobody else cared about being accepted [Big Grin]

Thanks.

It never crossed my mind NOT to do it.

My reaction to the people who didn't is kind of like my reaction would be if they showed up for their interview in shorts.

Edit: And it's clear they accepted the offer - he was looking at a list of people who had accepted, not just those they'd made offers to.

Boxer-briefs or tighty-whiteys?

Boxers.

Most of the time. [Wink]

Once pictures have been posted, I will tell you my reaction in a job interview setting. Until then, there's just not enough decisive evidence. And, after all, evidence is crucial as we are all lawyers here. In Ralphie's magical land of hot boxer-clad lawyers and barristers.

Picture.

I'm wearing boxers in that picture. (BTW, I'm the guy in the picture.)

I don't think so.

That reminds me again, Eve needs to join the forums. I don't suppose she responds to bribes?

Clearly. That woman is not wearing boxers.

Dags, I suspect that a number of your future coworkers are like me, and will kick themselves in a day or two. ("Oh, shoot! I never called to check on that!") I am impressed with your staying-on-top-of-it-ness. (And the first person who twists that gets drop-kicked. [Razz] )

Dag - I already knew you were are hottie. You don't have to post your wedding pic. Sheesh. [Roll Eyes] I'm talking about the scads of other candidates you promised to react to in your previous post.

Kwea - You have to let me decimate my own reputation. It's what I'm good at.

I'm working on it. Maybe I'll try to get her to post her thoughts on "Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell." That ought to suck her in. [Smile]

I was about to say, you look good in white Dag. [Taunt]

And just to show my good will, I'm not going to make any debriefing jokes. [Big Grin]
