Not even a link to a picture of Smaug?

Here's one.

Um... Smaug never blew fire at his own treasure...

He would have MELTED it then...

He wouldn't do that because he loves treasure.

[No No] How quickly we forget our favorite dragon:

PUFF THE MAGIC DRAGON!!
Raaa
Sing it with me now:

quote:
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.
Little Jackie Paper loved that rascal Puff
And brought him strings and sealing wax and other fancy stuff, oh

Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.

Together they would travel on boat with billowed sail
Jackie kept a lookout perched on Puff's gigantic tail
Noble kings and princes would bow whene'er they came
Pirate ships would lower their flags when Puff roared out his name, oh

Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.

A dragon lives forever, but not so little boys
Painted wings and giants's rings make way for other toys.
One grey night it happened, Jackie Paper came no more
And Puff that mighty dragon, he ceased his fearless roar.

His head was bent in sorrow, green scales fell like rain
Puff no longer went to play along the cherry lane.
Without his lifelong friend, Puff could not be brave
So, Puff that mighty dragon sadly slipped into his cave, oh

Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.
Puff, the magic dragon, lived by the sea
And frolicked in the autumn mist in a land called Honalee.

I think I had a Puff doll. But I was so young, I can't remember if it was the real thing, or just a knock-off that my parents lied to me about. It was a pale green color and you put baby powder in it, and squeezed its belly and it would shoot out some powder. Tell me, did they make such things? And were they real "Puff the magic dragons"? I hope so, otherwise my childhood will be ruined! [Smile]

I have a stuffed Puff that we got at a Peter Paul & Mary concert this past summer. No baby powder tummies, though. He's soooooooo cute!

Puff was always one of my favorite songs. Still is! I sang it in a cabaret in January, and brought my little sister up for a duet in the second verse. I made my best friend cry. I loooove that song!!

I also had the movie when I was little, I would watch it several times a day.

Here's a question for all you fantasy readers:

Traditionally, dragons are evil, and unicorns are good.

There have been a *LOT* of stories written about how dragons aren't *all* bad, etc. etc..

Are there any stories out there about evil unicorns?

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Black Unicorns? There was a book about one, but I can't remember if it was evil...

Also, a lot of books don't say they are good, but rather some sort of primordial magical beings to whom good and evil don't apply. They would kill anyone other than a virgin, remember?

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

There is the book The Black Unicorn by Terry Brooks, but IIRC, it's just an uber-special unicorn, not an evil one.

There's also a black unicorn in the anime The 13 Kingdoms (Juni Koki?), but he pretty much just looks different.

I've never heard that they won't kill virgins, but I've heard that they'll only let virgins ride them.

Why thanks Bok!

(and really, intelligence, I'm not that scary... am I?)

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Actually, I haven't heard of any stories involving actively evil unicorns.

People have a habit of looking for good elements in even the worst characters, but they tend to have a blind spot for assigning negative aspects to traditionally good characters.

I think I shall write a story about an evil unicorn. What should her side-kick be... a nasty, animate rainbow?

The unicorn's evil sidekick should be a BUNNY!

bunnies aren't just cute as everybody supposes
They got them hoppy legs and twitchy little noses
And what's with all the carrots?
What do they need such good eyesight for anyway?
Bunnies, bunnies
It must be bunnies

Well, that's always an option, but lecturing people about their moral inferiority and the resulting guilty spiral can often lead the victim to do the dirty deed themselves. It's a great power that the vegan paragons of virtue wield.

Posted by imogen (Member # 5485) on :

There's a short story by an Australian writer Nick Earls in which an unicorn gores a woman with his horn. Intentionally.

I don't know if you could describe the story as featuring an evil unicorn though - it's a fairly surreal piece of fiction where the unicorn flatmates with the narrator and the gored girl.

There is a faint memory stirring in my mind though of an evil unicorn story... can't pin it down for the life of me though. Hmmm, will think some more.

(Dagonee - Tony and I are re-working our way through Buffy season 2 at the moment. Re-watching after having seen seasons 6 and 7 makes us realise again how truly clever Joss Weddon is. )

(Edit: to Dagonee) Oh yes, that was the Nick Earls one.

But I am sure I have read another story (by another author) with an evil unicorn. I think it raped a girl. But I can't remember the title, author, specific plot or even if it really existed.

(And I am loath to plug that particular combination of words into google. Especially given I am at work)

So, Hatrack doesn't have graemlins for the actions I want to use all the time. Besides flouncing off and waggling my eyebrows at every opportunity, I want to be able to bat my eyelashes innocently when I'm denying things. I'm sure there's others, but I can't remember them right now.

Edit to add: And if the waggling eyebrows one had a Groucho Marx-type cigar thing going, too, that would be a bonus!

I think I'd like a raised-eyebrows-affected-innocence-I-have-no-idea-what-you're-talking-about graemlin.

I'd also like a raising one eyebrow graemlin, but I feel that would be cheating as I can't do that in real life. Because, you know, all the other graemlins have such a physical resemblance to my actions.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

See, I raise my eyebrows when I'm being suggestive, not when I'm faking innocent. I can't raise just one, either. [Frown] So I guess I couldn't use that one...

So maybe I could just use the batting eyelashes one for the same affect.

I tend not to bat my eyelashes though. I tried once and got asked if I had something in my eye. It sorta convinced me that I must not be doing it right.

Hey, Imogen - if you can turn yellow, shrink to the size of a smilie and plaster yourself on a computer screen in person...damn, that's one heck of a party trick. [Big Grin]

Trevor - I sure can. I'm the yellow smilie equivalent of choo choo bear.

Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :

You gotta kinda lower your chin and cock your head to one side and bat them fast three times, pause, and then twice more a -liiiittle- slower. That way it's so outrageous no one can mistake it for anything other than "I can't imagine you'd think such a thing of little ol' me."

I went through my photo directory to see if I had a pic that kinda looked like flouncing that I could link to, but no such luck.

Seeing it typed out makes it look like I put waaaaay too much thought in it. I actually had to stop and do it to figure out the "technique." [Smile] But no-one has ever thought I had something in my eye... I usually get more of a "Don't TRY that with me..." or "I'm not buying that for an instant."

So either it's not effective or all my friends know me too well.
