Oh, my favourite CD is a Christmas Music Box music. We play it only on Christmas morning so little bell songs go through the house.

It has 'Here Comes Santa Claus' on it but somehow in music box form it's quite listenable. [Smile]

I'm shocked and appalled that more people haven't listed The Huron Carol/Twas In the Moon of Wintertime and The Ukranian Bell Carol/Carol of the Bells as their favorites.

Incidentally, you can here The Huron Carol in the language that Saint Jean de Brebeuf wrote it in here . Although I happen to think it sounds particularly awesome with a good, low bass in control.

I did, Bob.

My favourite version comes from a choral CD that Chapters/Indigo/Coles was selling a bunch of years back. I gave it to my dad, who eventually gave it to my brother, who has lost it at least twice. And I CANNOT find that dratted version anywhere else. This Christmas, if it surfaces, I am KEEPING it.

Oh, and I really like O Come O Come Emmanuel (the older version), and O Holy Night.

Samuel Bush,

I would have chosen Karen Carpenter's rendition of Ave Maria as one of my favorites as well, but my wife always insists on singing along. She sings it opera-style sans the brass brassiere.

Last year my sister confessed to me that "Little Drummer Boy" makes her cry every time. When asked why, she said it's the line that goes..."then he smiled at me..." I'm a smart-a@@, so I told her that it was probably just gas.

Not even going to try and categorize....

Favorites:
David Bowie & Bing Crosby "Little Drummer Boy"
Elmo & Patsy "Gramma Got Run Over"
Trans-Siberian Orchestra - lots, especially "Carol of the Bells", "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo 12/24" and "Mad Russian's Christmas"
And how could I forget the "Hallelujiah Chorus"? I was one of four first sopranos in the entire school my sophomore year, they miked me for that song... scary and awesome at the same time.

Yuck yuck yuck:
"What Child is This?"
"Do You Hear What I Hear?"
"Feliz Navidad"

Favorite contemporary Christmas CD is Clint Black's "Looking For Christmas". Go out and buy NOW. It is FABULOUS. All songs are original, with a nice mix of secular and religious.

edit:

quote:
Yuck yuck yuck:
"What Child is This?"

Okay, I would probably get tired of "What Child Is This?" by itself, but my old parish's choir did a version of this that was a kind of a duet with an original lyric and melody intersperred with the traditional hymn. Unforuntately, the name of it is escaping me, but the song was absolutely lovely, and was one of my favorite pieces that we did at our pre-Midnight Mass christmas concert. [Smile] The Hallelujah was the best, though. We always sang it after communion at Midnight Mass. Didn't always do the best job, but we sang from our hearts, and the energy and joy would leave me feeling like I would burst with happiness. I really need to see if I can go to a Do-It-Yourself-Messiah this year. If not the big one downtown, then maybe a smaller one somewhere.

You mean the one at the Civic Opera House ? I always want to go and I always forget until the day of, which by then is too late to arrange for childcare. Won't be this year for me, though, I have conflicts on both dates (Mon. 12/20 and Tues 12/21)

Yeah, that's the one. [Smile] I went several years back. It was fun, but if I go again, I want to get there EARLY to get a seat on the main floor. We were up in one of the balconies, and it was kind of squishy. I'd really like to go again this year, because I no longer attend my old parish, which means I will miss out on hearing it. [Frown]

I love most Christmas music. Two traditional French carols that've recently become favorites =
"Bring a Torch, Jeannette Isabella" and "Sing We Now of Christmas"

http://www.cyberhymnal.org/htm/b/r/bringtor.htm

quote:
Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella
Bring a torch, come swiftly and run.
Christ is born, tell the folk of the village,
Jesus is sleeping in His cradle,
Ah, ah, beautiful is the mother,
Ah, ah, beautiful is her Son.

(the original French)
Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle
Un flambeau, courons au berceau.
C’est Jésus, bonnes gens du hameau,
Le Christ est né, Marie appelle
Ah! Ah! Que la mère est belle
Ah! Ah! Que l’Enfant est beau.

http://www.hymnsandcarolsofchristmas.com/Hymns_and_Carols/sing_we_now_of_christmas.htm

quote:
1. Sing we now of Christmas,
Noel sing we here.
Sing our grateful praises
To the maid so dear.

Chorus
Sing we Noel!
The King is born, Noel!
Sing we now of Christmas.
Sing we here, Noel!

Nope. I may have been confusing by saying "original lyric". I didn't mean the original lyrics for the tune, but lyrics that were written speficially for this arrangement, AFAIK.

I think it was called Child of the Poor, or something similar. That's kind of jogging my memory. Beautiful, beautiful song, though.

*googles* Yup:

quote:
"Child of the Poor" - Scott Soper composition which contrasts "What Child Is This" with his haunting text and melody.

Favourite Christian Christmas song: Either "Hark, the Herald Angels Sing" or "What Child is This?"

Favourite Secular Christmas song: "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch"

Whimsical: "The Twelve Pains of Christmas"

Favourite Christmas Album: Wow, I can't decide. It might be Mariah Carey's (the only good album she put out, incidentally), it might be Neil Diamond's (because it's so campy it's awesome), it might be Manhattan Tranfer's. Aha, that's it, my favourite Christmas Album is definitely Manhattan Transfer.

And now it's time to listen to them! Woo!

I love this carol, but I have a feeling it's one of those things that's spcific to the area in which you live. i.e. North-Eastern America and Quebec and Ontario.

But I'm glad someone else knows it.

I also like the bell carol but only if I'm singing over and over [Wink] .

EDIT: I love the melody of Greensleeves but dislike the "What child is this?" lyrics.

We've got Roger Whittaker cranked right now.

When my wife brought the first CD home I complained that Roger Whittaker was one of those guys who shows up along with Mantovani's Orchestra on those anthology CDs, sold on late-nite TV.

Now he's the first one we listen to when we break out the Christmas CDs. He's also been know to pop up in July when I start getting antsy for Christmas.

Represent, girl. You know it. Rep. Re. Sent.

Lesee, my father loved Good King Wenceslas and so it has a special place in my heart as well. All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth irks me as do some of those other Christmas songs written to be sung by children so their parents think they're cute.

My favorite Christmas carol is 'O Holy Night', then 'Hark the Herald Angels Sing' and 'O Come Emmanuel'

The one song that aggravates my father to no end is the Alvin and the Chipmunks song... You know, "Christmas, Christmas time is here, time for joy and time for cheer..." My brother and I have mastered the high pitched voices and sing it when we're unwrapping Christmas presents. [ROFL] It ALWAYS makes him roll his eyes.

xnera, is that "Who is This Child? (With "What Child is This")" by Ruth Elaine Schram? We're singing this in Stake Choir, and there are 3 parts: parts 2 and 3 sing "What Child is This", and part 1 sings an original lyric that starts off "Who is this baby, who is this child? Who is this little one so meek and mild? Angels sing lullabies, stars fill the skies. Who is this child?" (Part 1 sings first time, part 2 and 3 second time, all parts the third.) If so, I agree. I've never been fond of "What Child is This" (mainly because I love "Greensleeves" and always get mixed up), but it's quite lovely.
