I'm getting ready to run one. I've got a couple of people who have submitted characters already, but there are still slots open. If you'd be interested in playing, email me at the address provided in my profile for details about the game.

Posted by Intelligence3 (Member # 6944) on :

So, what's the pacing like? I've never done pbem role playing.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

The pacing is sloooowwwwwww. At best, you can get in one turn per day.

The up side is that you actually get to do a lot more role-playing, instead of roll-playing, if you take my meaning.

Posted by Intelligence3 (Member # 6944) on :

So what is the daily time commitment? What happens when I have to be away for a few days?

Posted by zgator (Member # 3833) on :

I'm betting Noemon will kill you off if you disappear for several days. That's the kind of guy he is.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

*raises hand* Ooh! Ooh! Pick me!

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

Will archives be posted? Because I'd read them if they were. [Smile]

Posted by Intelligence3 (Member # 6944) on :

Just to clarify, I want to play, I just want to make sure I'm capable of giving it the commitment Noemon deserves.

Posted by twinky (Member # 693) on :

If it's anything like the other ones (Slash's and mine, for instance), being away for a few days is fine because it happens to everyone. Depending on the situation, they wait, go on without you, or have someone else handle your character's actions while you're on hiatus.

I do that to my players (take off somewhere on a plane) all the time. [Razz]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

He sure does. *shakes fist*

Posted by Scott R (Member # 567) on :

Being away for a few days is NOT fine. We grudgingly allow it.

But let's have none of this nonsense about absenteeism being 'fine.' I'm on pins and needles over here, and Rennick's off dallying with some East-coast-pasty-faced secretary or some such. . .

[Big Grin]

I'm totally interested, but I don't think I have the time right now, and I'm about to have even less time, dang it. Ah well. But I will, of course, offer my services for hosting the archives at sakeriver, should you be interested.

Posted by Scott R (Member # 567) on :

saxon, have I ever told you that I think you're a pretty classy fellow?

You are, you know.

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

Heh, I doubt you'd say that after watching me power through a foot-long sandwich, but thanks. [Smile]

Nanner Nanner boo boo.

I already have my character created.

You will all worship me. [Evil] [Evil] [Evil]

If you're running an email list I'd like to get it. I wanna read it too. [Smile]

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I totally have done things differently in this game. One of the last things I decided was the character class. I had almost everything else decided by then.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Not that I've *seen* this character or anything, msquared.

Porter, how close are you to having your stats and equipment and all that ready?

Int3, they're right, the pace in a PBEM game is incredibly slow. Slash's game has been running since July 2003, I believe, and less than two weeks of game time have passed.

I'm looking to get out a turn a day, Monday through Friday. I will sometimes be available on weekends, but I won't always be able to count on it. Things happen, and I expect players to have stretches where they aren't able to play. I'm sure I will. I'd like to minimize stretches, of course, but what can you do?

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Um, I haven't started, but it wouldn't take me that long.

Of course, I'm going to be gone for the next week, so...

Is there a date when you need it by?

Posted by msquared (Member # 4484) on :

I thought I was still waiting on you to give me some more background so that I could make up my background.

If not let me know and I will send you the info I have so far.

You may want to get with Saxon about a name for your game and his game tools.

msquared

Posted by Intelligence3 (Member # 6944) on :

Okay, count me in, if I may.

And tell me what I need to do if I can play. [Smile]

Int3, I'll email you some information about the world tonight, and you can work up a character to submit from that. If you'd like I can also send you a couple of the writeups I've done for characters I'm playing in the various PBEM games going on, so that you can have a better idea of what I'm wanting from you at this stage.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Msquared, I'm glad I said something! I thought I was waiting on you. If you would, send me an email message and let me know what further information you're needing--it's possible that I sent you something that you didn't get.

Porter--there's no rush. With the holidays coming up, and me possibly doing a little bit of travelling, I'm afraid that I won't be able to actually get the game going until very late Dec, or possibly early Jan. I was just curious how he was shaping up.

For the record, I am interested too.

But Noemon knew that anyway.

Well, thanks to this thread, I am now wasting time with the crunchy bits of my character. [Mad]

I'll send you a rough draft today.

Basic info is up at SakeRiver.

I called the game Jake's game.

Real original I thought.

msquared

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

The working title for the game is Pasan. This may change, of course, being a working title and all, but it's growing on me.

Posted by msquared (Member # 4484) on :

Pasan it is for now.

I still have to pick my spell book and my skills but I have my feats and weapons and physical traits done.

I will also have to add the little gadgets.

msquared

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Email me with your gadget ideas.

Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :

Noemon, you know I'm interested. I'll try to get you my stats and equipment list before I leave for work.

I just sent you my character. Let me know what you think.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Just wrote you back. I love where you're taking this guy.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

This is by far my favorite part of role playing -- making the characters.

Twink's PBEM campaign is the only one where I've had as much fun (at times) playing him. But that's mostly because Mordecai has had a miserable few weeks.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

I'd never especially enjoyed creating characters until I started submitting character sketches for these PBEM games. With those I get to write an ultra short story about the character, which is all sorts of fun for me.

I really love designing game worlds, races, spells, and magical items. Historically that's probably been my favorite part of the whole process.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

I have made up far more characters than I have ever played.

I went to a lot of effort designing one character only to discover that it was like a combination of Blade and Angel. And I thought it was original! [Frown]

Here's how you'd do it in D&D (mostly 2nd edition AD&D):

Start with Paladin who gets killed by a vampire and becomes a vampire himself, and is now chaotic evil. Have his sire vampire killed at some point, so that the ex-paladin vampire is now a free agent. At some point he kills somebody with a helm of alignment change. How he's lawful good agian. He atones for his crimes, and becomes a full-blown paladin vampire, and dedicates his life to erradicating the world of vampires.

Another character like that was one that I discovered was almost exactly like Ryoni Kenshin.

It ticks me off when I come up with a cool idea and then find out that it's already been done.

Yeah, don't you hate that?

How do you go about coming up with your character concepts? Do you think "oh, it would be cool if X", or do you just start writing and see what comes out, or what? I do the latter. I was pretty surprised by the details of my various character's lives.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I use to love that part of it too, Nomen, back when I use to DM a lot. I would make up things that mostr characters would never even get to see, let alone play against.

It use to frustrate my players a bit...they would try and catch me off balance by choosing a path that didn't seem to conform to the missons they were on, only to find out that not only was I not suprised I had made up entire nations and cities that I had been planning on using on other adventures.

Sometimes they would find themselves in the midst of the next mission, which would be geared for them at a higher level...that was alwys my favorite....

You know, when a group of 5 level 4-5 players come across an outpost of Drow and mind flayers that they weren't supposte to find for another 5 levels, when they would have had mucho NCP help to complete that part......

And at that point they had not even met the NPC's that would help them yet... [Evil]

Both methods. For example, Mordecai started with the question "What is a way I could play somebody with healing powers in Twink's world? How about a Paladin? How could that happen?"

I don't really know how I first came up with the idea of the orc prince. For him, a lot of it came out as "what would make this character cool and fun?"

The last development that I sent you today came from the question (what in the world would that character be doing way over there)?

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

Oh, I meant to mention it earlier, but I'm toying with the idea of having Mike set up a forum over on Sakeriver devoted specifically to this game, where it would be played. If I do this, it will be readable by all, but only members of the game will be able to post there. It seems to me that that should be relatively easy to follow, and should eliminate the need to create a digest as such.

Anybody see any pitfalls to this?

Posted by Mr.Funny (Member # 4467) on :

The only problem that I can think of is that the threads may get jumbled if more than one thread is active at any given point in time. Not a big issue, but it may be an inconvinience. I think a forum would work better than email, though.

Posted by mr_porteiro_head (Member # 4644) on :

Would it be possible to recieve an email when somebody updates the thread in the forum? I get notified when I get new email, but not when sakeriver has a new message.

Also, it would be nice to have a separeate thread for OOC chatter that other people could comment in.

Posted by saxon75 (Member # 4589) on :

Actually, it wouldn't be hard to have just one thread active at a time, since you can lock threads. I could make Jake a mod for the forum, so he could be in charge of that stuff.

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

That would be both fun and useful.

Noemon, I just sent you an email with my character stats and equipment list.

Got it Derrell, thanks! Let me think about your questions and get back to you tomorrow. I'm thinking no horse, since you'd have arrived either by sea or over very difficult mountains. If you came over the mountains, though, I might let you have a pack mule. I'll let you know.

I can picture it now. A hundred years from now, an explorer finds a computer with this thread on it.

"What's PBEM D&D?" [Confused] [Dont Know] Those 21st century people were sooo strange. [Eek!]

They would get a kick out of this.

Have read email and replied to same.

I expect that it really is only a matter of time until some sociologist does a study of the Hatrack community. Heck, we've already had one pretend sociologist perform a make believe study of us. The real thing can't be too far behind.

Replied, btw.

Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :

read it, replied to it.

I wonder what conclusions that sociologist would come to after studying Hatrack?

Posted by Noemon (Member # 1115) on :

That they were able to put their finger on cause the sharp decline in productivity of intelligent readers of SF between the ages of about 14 and 55 in the late 20th and early 21st century?
