If Dagonee is a liberal, there's nothing left but to go feel blue.

You can join my cabal Dagonee.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Nah, I think I need to start my own cabal. Y'all are way too moderate for me.

And to be fair, BC said I have converted from being a liberal to being a conservative. Which is actually a pretty frightening thought, even to me. [Big Grin]

Dagonee

Right...before you admitted he was right (although where you did tht I don't know.. [Big Grin] ) you were a liberal.....

Along with all you other socially progressive Roman Catholics...lol...

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

He's with the Jesuits. [Wink]

The Jesuits are into some pretty liberal causes...

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Yeah, I heard they are real party animals....

Posted by imogen (Member # 5485) on :

I like the Jesuits.

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

Nah, Dag's with Opus Dei...

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

I do too. And they ARE fairly liberal. One of my friends is a former Jesuit. He left before taking vows in order to marry his best friend. Very awesome guy.

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

o_O Opus Dei is like the..opposite of Jesuit.

Posted by Storm Saxon (Member # 3101) on :

Catholics in general are middle of the road weirdos that neither party can really depend on for the vote. One year they fall in behind JFK, the next they love Reagan. This year they voted about 50/50 for Bush. So, it doesn't suprise me that Dagonee, as a good Catholic, would not obviously be either liberal or conservative.

Also, aren't there a lot of 'conservative' Catholics who, like, blame Jesuits for liberalizing the Catholic church, and causing its decline and for many of the current abuses?

(Sorry to derail the fluff thread.)

Can I join your cabal, Dagonee? Please?

[ROFL] [Hail]

Hell, everyone's welcome in the Dagal. [Big Grin]

There's an ancient Jesuit nun who teaches Ethics and Morality in the English department at our university. She's fiercely academic and a very very interesting and awesome person.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*thinks the Dagal needs a degel* [Big Grin]

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Is "degel" a flag? Or am I totally misremembering?

Posted by imogen (Member # 5485) on :

I was sure she was jesuit, but her bio just says Roman Catholic with no further specification.

Either way, she's an amazing woman: Sister Veronica Brady.

One of her papers.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*is impressed* Yep! A flag or a banner. [Smile]

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

My folks are from NY and our parish let a Jewish congregation use space in our building for a year when their synnogogue burned down. So we got very cool tours from the Rabbis as part of our pre-Confirmation classes. I still remember some, apparantly.

Yesss!

Member of the Dagal.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

degel just sounds way too much like kegel which is too close to something like work . . . I'd be mighty suspicious myself . . .

On the other hand, I am shocked, just shocked, Dag, by your new status . . . what's the world coming to? [Evil Laugh]

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

We participated in a Seder when I took my course on the Pentateuch in college.

It was so cool. Especially seeing how catholicism tied in with judaism.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Kegel? Work?

You need to work at it, it is worth it!

see now, I thought mack was on a roll tonight, but now i know it's you kwea!

[No No]

[Big Grin]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Not pronounced the same, Shan. KEE-guhl v. deh-GHEL.

Anyway . . . [Evil] what's wrong with kegels?

Posted by Storm Saxon (Member # 3101) on :

Nothing. Just put sour cream and jelly on them and they're quite yummy.

Mmmmm. I could eat kegels all day.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

*wonders if Storm means kugels or bagels*

*wonders if anyone else on Hatrack knows what "kugel" and "bagel" are slang for* [Big Grin]

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

ah well - pronunciation has never been my strong point!

nor plugging in power cords -

nor carrying off practical jokes . . .

arggghhhh - i'm a failure . . . . life is over . . . sob . . .

Popinfresh goodness, I bet.

it can actually be tough to nail many people's political stances on a message board...since many people are all over the map if you hit the right issue.

Many acquaintances of mine think I am rather right wing (a card carrying member of the religious right)...however, there are many issues where I sharply deviate from the republican party (for example the death penalty). Also, many times when I side with the actions of the party...but I have different goals. For example, in Iraq, I think liberating the people from Saddam was far more important than the whole WMD thing that Bush pushed. Personally, I think that the crimes Saddam committed against his people should have been enough for the entire UN to step in.

Neither party would like my idea of education reform or welfare reform (those on the right think it is too liberal, and those on the left would think it was right wing).

My guess is Dag is the same way…many of his ideas seem to lean to the right, but he is able to make up his own mind on issues.

Frisco is equal parts Capitalist Pig and Free-Love Hippie.

Frisco averages out to be a Moderate. [Big Grin]

There are few people on the board that fit perfectly into the "liberal" and "conservative" labels, Frisco thinks, and Bean Counter will surely learn that when the bug up his ass crawls out.

Posted by Shigosei (Member # 3831) on :

Shigosei wants to know if this is another third-person thread.

Shigosei's family seems to think she is a liberal. Shigosei's friends seem to think she is a conservative.
Therefore, Shigosei is a moderate, or just likes to argue with viewpoints she knows people hold for the fun of it.

Anyone who even thinks Dagonee might be a liberal needs to pay more attention. Reasonable and articulate conservative =/= liberal, sorry.

Does this mean we can throw fruit at him and what not?

Why fruit? Why not halava?

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

Maybe you should be queit before we start prosecuting you, you red Commie... perhaps this is getting out of hand.

That's it! We'll throw hands at you. [Evil Laugh] Prepare to feel our manual wrath!

Just remember, I'm Head Minion (is that too presumptious?) of the Dagonee Not-So-Secret Dagal. Be forewarned, it is not an easy mantle to take on, being one of Dag's groupies.

I'm mean there are the ipso factos, quid pro quos, and don't get me started on all those habeas corpuses!

Dags, do you really want to suggest halvah in lieu of fruit? Fruit is soft and squishy -- messy, but unlikely to cause a concussion. A brick of halvah could really do some damage.

Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :

Yes, Bok is head minion. He called dibs, and fair is fair. [Smile]

Rivka, I think I can catch the halvah, and then I'll eat it. [Big Grin]

Dagonee

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Right. Everyone, form a circle. Wait until Dags has his back to you, then lob blobs of halvah at him.

Go!

Nothing wrong with being liberal, though that's not the topic's idea -- that was to mock BC. Anyway, I used to think of myself as a right-winger...then I realized that I'm really a moderate libertarian.

Dag is still a liberal... it's those people <points at the Hatrack Liberal Cabal> who aren't liberals...

(with apologies to Chesterton)

Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :

Huh?

Posted by Jim-Me (Member # 6426) on :

The whole thread just reminded me of GKC defending his socio-political positions by maintaining that the liberals of his day were not liberal.
