I just searched for 'Char Margolis' and I can't believe I got no hits!
Maybe it's old to you and already archived or has she never been discussed on this forum?

I saw her on the Dutch television and I just read her book 'QUestions from earth, answers from heaven'. I liked it, I like her as a person as well. I believe in her integrity.

What do you think?

Never heard of her. Who is she?

Good to see you by the way! Welcome back!

Thanks [Smile] , nice to see you again too, Noemon.

(We finally got a cheap and quick Internet connection, so no more too-high-phone bills. And winter is coming, so I hope to visit Hatrack more often now.)

Char is a medium, who is able to communicate with the dead. She is American, I believe she comes from Michigan. She does readings on television, it is very impressive to see her do that. I don't know much more about her background. Here is the Char web page

Ah. Not only a fraud, but a ridiculous fraud. Here's hoping she remains unpopular.

I'm skeptical of that statement.

Tom, you are making me very curious. Why is she a fraud? Got any links or information for me?

Well, for one thing, if you could communicate with the dead, would you work as a TV medium? No.

It's like all those deluded sleazebags who think they can see auras or predict the future or touch objects and figure out how they were used: if these people actually had these skills, why would they live the sad, scrabbling, meaningless lives that they do?

Because they want to HELP people!

That url just takes me to a .jpg of the site's index page. This link will take you to the actual index page.

I see dead people.

Me too Kama [Big Grin]

Seriously Tom, that is no argument to call someone a fraud!
I have seen her working with people like a young 14 year old girl whose mother committed suicide. I have seen the love and integrity with which she helped that girl. If she is faking all that, she is worse than a criminal: To play with other people's emotions while they are in such distress is more than a crime, it would be evil.

So please if you call her a fraud, give me evidence of her being a fraud. Are there people who have been in contact with her complaining about false information, about not being helped properly? Is there any proof she did know the things she knows beforehand and is somehow cheating?

Have you read the book I mentioned? What do you think of her philosophy?

I believe Tom is skeptical of anything supernatural, on any end of the spectrum. Which is actually kind of ironic, seeing as how he likes Sci-Fi, which deals with "out of the natural" ideas a lot..

Farmgirl

(although the $500 per session makes me pretty skeptical that she is doing it for altruistic reasons, as well)

People go to a medium, believing or hoping that she will get them into contact with their dead loved one, or whatever.

They HOPE to be satisfied.

When running a con, that's half the battle-- winning your audience.

I'm not saying that she is running a con. But the statistics of honest mediums to dishonest mediums is not in her favor.

Yes. I agree wholeheartedly. I'd rather share a room with a bucket full of pond scum than a professional "psychic."

Personally, I just don't believe anyone can communicate with the dead. However, ginette, that doesn't mean I want to destroy your belief that she may or may not do that.

Whereas I think the best way to prevent people from taking advantage of the gullible is to ungull their audience.

So there is no one out there who has read this book and wants to give an opinion... OK [Frown]

A rather thorough explanation and debunking of Margolis's "abilities". She uses a very standard technique taught to psychologists everywhere -- ask leading questions.

If she's wrong, she abandons her line of questioning quickly, if she's right, she pushes it for what its worth. She asks vague questions that have many possible interpretations, and tries to "prime the pump" by acting as if she's getting information from "beyond" that she'd been told beforehand.

Thanks for the link fugu. That was what I was looking for. You see, as I said I saw her on television and I just couldn't believe you would ever DARE to fake things like this! So I gave her the benefit of the doubt (especially since she seemed to be very sensitive and loving with those distressed people) and I read her book.

I still don't know what to think of it. It seems to me that the most plausible explanation is that she really believes that she is getting things from beyond. I can't believe she is faking consciousnessly.
