I saw, many years ago on the Discovery channel, a NavStar like computer thing that would find a route from A to B based not just on distance or time, but to avoid major roads, scenic route in other words. Well this was a prototype, and I never heard about it again. MapQuest will find one of the first two, but now I want to find a back-country (non-Interstate), cross-country route. Anyone know a place that will find this, or do I just have to go buy a whole bunch of detailed maps?

Should I be taking this as a "no"? [Wink]

I dunno Hobbes -- I just use my handy Rand McNally Road Atlas. It has everything I need to travel the back roads -- which is my favorite way to go anywhere...

Streets and Trips lets you filter out Interstates and other controlled access roads in it's route planner.

Try Delorme Topo USA 5.0. If there is a good hiking or bicycling club nearby, you should be able to talk one of the members into allowing you to give the program a test spin. Or at least allow you to watch them give you a custom demo of its features.

I used to have a program called MapUSA that was pretty good. One of the menu options was an AVOID drop down box in which you could select which types of roads you wished to...well, avoid - interstates, toll roads, local routes, etc.

However, this was back in '95. I have no idea what's out there now that MapQuest has taken over.
