For a girl, Linnea Rose

For a boy, first name Mark, but we need a second name.

For reference, we have Matthew Dietrich, Olivia Grace, and Andrew Thomas (yes, our Third is named Andrew. And my dh has never caught on.)

dpr, consider that your daughter will have to explain to people how to pronounce her name for the rest of her life. I thought it was pronounced Lin-ee-ah.

There's nothing wrong with that, but she might be frustrated when she's growing up. I hated being named Kira when I was younger and I really hated when people mispronounced my name, which happened all the time. It still happens, but I don't mind any more.

I think that Linnea is very pretty, btw.

I'll be honest with you. I'm partial to Rose as a middle name (obvious), and have always liked Mark as a boy's name, but I think you're only going to get into trouble with Linnea -- unless, of course, you intend for her to hang around in the exclusive company of intellectuals. [Smile]

Wasn't it Carolus Linneaeus (sp?) who figured out the taxonomy system we still use in Biology today?

I would have prounoucned the name you have as Lin-ne-a based on that spelling, and because of Carolus.

I like Rose too for a girl.

I like Mark as well, and David for boy's names.

Seriously, I think a vowel-beginning name goes well with "Mark", for instance;

Mark Ethan, Mark Oliver, Mark Adam, Mark Ian, Mark Urban (the last one because I needed a "U" name although it's very modern.)

Don't do it !!

If you already have a son named Matthew and follow it up with Mark, they will be plagued with "Luke & John" jokes for the rest of their lives.

I like the girl's name, but I would also vote for trying to spell it phonetically. My daughter's name is sort of unusual, and to top it off is not really spelled the way it's pronounced. This has been a pain in the rear since she was born. It's gotten to the point where most of the time we use her nickname for doctor's records, etc. because no one can ever spell it to look it up, and it's ALWAYS mispronounced.

Does the name Linnea come from the tiny white flower called linnea (at least it's called so in the Scandinavian countries, named after Carl von Linné or Linnaeus), or do you have some other source?

I think it's a very beautiful name, so I'm hoping it's a girl [Wink]

Zam, we did pick Mark because our boys have Biblical names, but hmm, maybe Stephen or Paul would avoid that...

Hmm, now my husband does not like Linnea (I actually got it from a book title, "Linnea in Monet's Garden", and fell in love with it.) Now he wants Julia.
I am determined to pick a name for each gender early this time b/c Andrew was an hour old before he got a name.

My brother's name is Mark Thomas. I *love* Julia. It was on our short list before we decided on Abigail.

Julia Rose (I'm also partial to it, as it's Abigail's middle name) Julia Catherine, Julia Elizabeth. All of those are pretty.

That's nothing.... my Melissa was 2 DAYS old before she had a name! We were just drawing complete blanks for girls names because we were sure we were having a son.

I always thought it would be cool to be called "Monet", although I would never do that to someone.

I read Linnea as "linn-ee-ah". Perhaps Linneia would be better?

If you want a flower name that'll scar someone for the rest of their life, try Simbelmynë.

a. it's geeky
b. it's impossible to spell
c. it's impossible to pronounce
d. it's associated with death
e. nicknames could be "Cymbal", "Moony"...

*grin* My son didn't get named for a week, and my daughters went nameless for a day and two days, respectively. Not because we didn't have names picked out (we did), but because there are specific Jewish naming ceremonies.

It's not like babies get called much besides "the baby" for the first few weeks anyway. [Wink]

Instead of simbelmynë, you could name the kid elanor. It's a flower, there is precedent for naming girls that. It even sounds like a 'real' name.

I want to name my hypothetical daughter Eowyn. But that's probably going to be hard on the kid so it will be a middle name if anything.

Linnea Rose would be a lovely name. Yeah, it will probably be misspelled or mispronounced sometimes. As for a middle name for Mark...how about Antony (Anthony?) [Razz]

I love the name Rose. It was my grandma's middle name.

My mothers middle name is Marie and my fathers is Aubrey.

I named my daughter Aubree Marie. If I had another daughter I was going to name her Alexis Rose.

I like the name Julia. However, I always think Julia Gulia when I hear that name. Darn that Adam Sandler!
