He apparently had a stroke which caused him to fall, hitting his head. He was in a coma for a few days and passed away late Friday night.
The funeral is this Friday. I'm feeling kind of down in the dumps and could use some hugs and cheering up.

Thank you, rivka. Things like this really throw you for a loop. I couldn't believe it when I heard he was in a coma.

I'm sorry to hear about that. How's Grandma taking it?

Outwardly, grandma appears to be coping with it well, but I'm not sure how she'll handle the funeral. Ted was 2 years younger than she is. Of course, she was a nurse for many years so she understands what a stroke can do to a person.
I'm still not sure how well she'll handle it. She went to see him at the hospice and left he died just after she and my mom left that night.

Dorry to hear about your great uncle, Derrell. How old was he?
Posted by Derrell (Member # 6062) on :
Noemon, he was 85. My grandma is 2 years older than him. That's one reason I'm worried about how well she's taking it.
If he'd lived he would've had brain damage. I'm not sure if it was caused by the stroke or hitting his head when he fell.
I think he's better off than if he'd lived, but it's still hard to deal with.

I expect so; strokes can be pretty devastating. That doesn't make it any easier to bear though; when someone you love dies, it doesn't make it better to think of ways in which it could have been worse. You love them, and they're gone. That's never easy. I know that there's nothing I could say that would be of much help, but you and your family have my sympathy, and I'm thinking of you.

I'd like to thank everybody for the hugs and condolences.
I'd also like to thank Goody for the kiss. I believe it's the first time a Jatraquera's ever kissed me.
The funeral's going to be rough for me. I've always gotten squicked by the viewing they generally have before the funeral. I always try to sit behind somebody tall so I don't have to look in the casket. I don't know if it's a phobia or what, but I always get that way.
I'm really glad I've got Hatrack to turn to in times like this.

The funeral was this morning and I'm more bummed out than I was when I got up this morning. A lot of it has to do with the graveside service. It was a military funeral complete with bugler blowing taps and a rifle salute. Taps played on a bugle is the saddest thing I've ever heard.
I could use some hugs.

Each dynamic is so different between two people that it's very difficult to know exactly how to comfort a person when a loved one dies. I'm sorry you lost someone close to you, Derrell. If you need someone to talk to, feel free to use my e-mail address and drop me a note.
