I posted this in my livejournal, but I didn't get nearly the non-Canadian volume of response that I was hoping for. So I decided to turn to Hatrack for some input.

I'm conducting a purely personal survey. I have listed a number of people/things, and I need you to tell me if you recognize them. And please tell me where you're from.

I grew up in Michigan (lived there until I was 17). I spent the last four years in Houston (except for the semester spent in Germany), and currently live in Georgia.

1. Great Big Sea--have heard of, don't think I've heard.
2. Red Green--have seen a few times. My brothers were fans.
3. Finger 11--Have heard.
5. Mr Dressup--I used to watch this every day! I love him! Casey freaked me out a bit, though.
6. Avril Lavingne--has anyone not heard of her?
8. Tim Horton's--Seen them all over the north, never eaten there.
10. The Guess Who--Have heard of, not heard.
12. Barenaked Ladies--again, has anyone not heardof them?

I just about died when I found out I was one of the kids who got to have lunch with him when he came to my middle school. I sat right next to him and was too awed to speak the whole hour.

And I have a question: Were Fred Penner and Under the Umbrella Tree Canadian as well? I just remember watching them along with Mr. Dress Up, whom I had never realized was Canadian.

2. Red Green - my favorite episode was when they installed a sunroof in the side of a van with duct tape. The sad thing is, I know people like them. The even sadder thing is that it took me forever to realize that Pat McKenna was the same guy as in Traders. Talk about totally not the same guy. Or, uhm, uh. Oh forget it.

2. Red Green — The colors my coworker Peter can't distinguish between.

4. Paul Gross — Speak of the devil! This name is so darn familiar, I have to look him up ... OH! The Due South guy! I KNEW I'd seen that name before!

7. Rick Mercer — Only name I can think of that's close is Mercer Mayer ...

1. Great Big Sea -- Seen them live something like six times. They're good friends of my brother-in-law (a Flamenco guitar player from Newfoundland. Not that GBS is flamenco, but I think there's some sort of safety in numbers out there).

2. Red Green -- Is Bill Carr still on the show? He performed at our local theatre festival (the Atlantic Theatre Festival) for many years. Also a really nice guy I've had the pleasure of hanging out with on a few occasions.

3. Finger 11 -- They were better when they were The Rainbow Butt Monkeys (I kid you not. This was their original name).

4. Paul Gross -- The Due South dude! My uncle was on the show once. Speaks highly of the Due South Dude.

5. Mr Dressup -- Ernie Coombs, rest in peace. Every Canadian child knows, remembers, loves and cherishes Mr. Dressup. He was a good friend of my ex-girlfriend's family. You've never met a nicer man.

6. Avril Lavingne -- The best thing about her is Weird Al's version of complicated.

7. Rick Mercer -- The man, the myth, the legend behind "Talking to Americans." Some Americans don't think Canadians think they're idiots. These Americans have clearly never seen "Talking to Americans." He's also the best thing that even happened to "This Hour Has 22 Minutes." One of the best fake news programs ever, although it kinda sucks now.

8. Tim Horton's -- The only corporation I know have to have so perfectly, completely and flawlessly integrated itself into the culture of a country. We are nothing without our Tim Horton's.

9. Degrassi -- Junior High. I never watched it, but it's referred to in hushed tones mostly reserved for brainwashed cultists by most people I know.

10. The Guess Who -- There are people who don't know The Guess Who? Criminal!

11. African Lion Safari -- This place always seemed kind of sad to me. I've never been. I'm also surprised it's on the list, would you know about it if you weren't from Southern Ontario?

12. Barenaked Ladies -- Yep. Seen them live a bunch of times as well. They performed at our small town's apple festival a few years ago. On of their mom's is from the area I believe.

13. Inukshuk -- These things are eerily beautiful. Anyone who hasn't seen some of the great Canadian movies about the North are required to go rent
Atanarjuat (The Fast Runner) and Snow Walker immediately. You will hate yourself forever if you don't.

14. Kraft Dinner -- I can't stand KD. But how would Canadian college students survive without it?

15. Due South -- See Paul Gross.

16. Smarties (the chocolate kind) -- I still eat the red ones last. But they have to stop messing with the colours.

17. Robert Munsch -- He teaches at Guelph! How cool is that!? It also saddens and depresses me that Americans don't know him. Without I doubt the author behind the best children's literature ever made. Whenever a kid asks me for a story, it's inevitably one of his I recite.

18. Canadian Tire -- In fact, I have a few Canadian Tire Dollars in my wallet right now.

19. Jim Carrey -- Well, duh.

20. Guy Gavriel Kay -- twinky introduced me to him and then we had a good argument about him on Hatrack. Clearly not enough people are searching for every post I make.

21. Harvey's -- This doesn't exist in America? But, but, but, they make one of the best veggie burgers anywhere! And at a fast food joint no less. How could something so wrong be so right?

22. Gordon Lightfoot -- If someone hasn't heard of him it's their own fault. They must be living under a rock or something. And Rat seems to be confusing him with Stan Rogers. Which is a crime in all 13 provinces and territories.

23. Sarah McLaughlan -- Again, I think you have to make a conscious effort to avoid her. I haven't heard her newest album, but the one before it was beautiful. Fire up your Kazaa, people.

24. Poutine -- Call me crazy, but I never developed a taste for cheese curd and gravy on fries.

25. Nickleback -- You know, they were voted the worst thing ever to happen to rock music by a Brit Paper? He he. Good old fashioned straight up Canadian rock. You can't not love it. Well... some of it.

26. Bryan Adams -- People exist who haven't heard of Bryan Adams? Like, that's physically possible? He's one of the top selling musicians in the world (the Japanese are especially fond of him). Summer of '69? Everything I Do? Didn't anyone watch "Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves"?

27. Wonderland -- As in Canada's Wonderland? That I got free tickets to all summer? That my place of employment rented for a day in August for it's employees? Good times, good memories.

28. Gordon Korman -- Never heard of him. I even looked him up to be sure. I feel like such a Canadian failure.

29. (pre-sweetened) Iced Tea -- It can exist in another form? Presweetened power = Iced Tea. It's a fact.

30. Loreena McKennitt -- The Highwayman is my favourite poem. She puts its words to song = love.

So, even though I'm Canadian I missed out on one. I grew up in Nova Scotia, in the Annapolis Valley for what it's worth.

I had never heard of Mr. Dressup or Tim Horton, but was otherwise familiar with them all (even if, as was the case with "Kraft dinner," I knew them as a wacky Canadian version of a better thing/phrase.)

I was born in Michigan, lived most of my life in the Chicago area, and am currently in Wisconsin.

I'm originally from Atlanta, Georgia, and have been transplanted to Indiana for grad school.

I discovered none of these during the 3 hours I was in Canada when I was 8, nor during the 3 days I was in Canada for the Society for Music Theory Conference in 2000.

Most of these I've heard because they're singers or bands and their music gets played on radio stations I listen to. Tim Horton's have been creeping into Rhode Island (and I think I saw a ton of them in Montreal). I'm in Providence, Rhode Island

I've only been to Canada once, and that was Montreal for a weekend 3 weeks ago.

9. Degrassi -- Degrassi Jr. High was a Canadian TV show in the eighties, shown in the U.S. on PBS
10. The Guess Who -- a band
12. Barenaked Ladies - another band, but one whose music I actually know
15. Due South -- a TV show from the 90's, with a Mountie as the main character
16. Smarties (the chocolate kind) -- I have only recently heard that certain other countries (I don't think I heard about Canada) have candies called Smarties that are similar to M&M's
19. Jim Carrey -- disgustingly rich comedic actor
20. Guy Gavriel Kay -- fantasy author, but haven't read any of the books
22. Gordon Lightfoot -- singer from the 70's(?)
23. Sarah McLaughlan -- modern singer/pianist with beautiful voice

The Tim Horton's on my corner is the butt of a joke...just down the street is a police station. Celia, I know of clamato juice AND Men with Brooms which I very nearly had to watch when there were no other movies in a Toronto theater. Luckily, it was the last week they were showing LOTR. Most of the rest I knew without going to Canada.

UofU, there is still a Degrassi High show on TV. Where's the puking smilie?
