I started getting a sore throat about a week ago. It was mild, just a hint really, accompanied by a gentle rise of tonsil. By Wednesday, I had lost my voice. However, I had no other symptoms - no fever, no tiredness, nothing. Just a raw throat and a swollen tonsil.

By Friday, I decided to stay home. My throat hurt, and I felt weak. I slept all day long. Saturday was somewhat better. Today I am up and about, my voice is still gravelly but it's usable, and I woke with mucus in my head. It's pretty much drained out by now.

Is this a cold or what? I feel healthy enough to go back to work except for the nasty sore throat. What can I do to prevent losing my voice again?

A sore throat for a week would make me go to the doctor.

I hope you feel better.

But it's getting better?

I wish my hubby had been home this weekend so I could get another adult's opinion.

er, I mean another adult who knows me and could observe my behavior. Sometimes I'm sicker than I realize. I'm not very kind to myself physically, and I like to have someone take care of me.

My husband DID bring me hot-and-sour soup, which always makes me feel better. But then he's been at Dragonwood all weekend, leaving me to fend for myself.

I've tried not to make a big deal of it, but I'm really sad now.

It has happened to me or my brother several times. All those times we only took some usual medication and got rid of it...

Feel better! [Frown]

What's the "usual medicine"? I don't take medicine as a rule. I tend to avoid going to the doctor, mostly because it's expensive and they don't generally tell me anything I didn't already know.

I don't want to take antibiotics if I don't need to. I DO want to take antibiotics if I do.

How can you tell whether an ailment is due to a virus or a bacterium?

What home remedies might work?

Uh, I'm not sure exactly what it was I took, but it's definitely not an antibiotic. And even if I told you the name, I'm not sure you'd know it, since I think it's made in Romania... [Big Grin]

Hope you feel better, with or without taking something!

Tea with honey and lemon.
Any tea will do, but if you can get it Traditional Medicinals "Gypsy Cold Care" is AWESOME!
If you don't do tea, just warm the lemon juice, mix it with honey and take a spoonful every half hour.
Keep taking your C, and if you still feel bad tomorrow, call a doc, it could be strep.

Hard to say what it is, but most likely caused by post nasal drip. Could even just be allergies. Probably not strep without a fever or tiredness.

Echinacea and lots of vitamin C are good for colds. If your tonsils don't stop being swollen in a day or two, I'd go to the doctor.

Saline sprays for your nose if your head is stuffy, a throat spray and/or an antihistimine. Hot tea with lemon and honey. The lemon clears the phlegm and the honey has some antimicrobial properties. Put your face over a steaming bowl of water with peppermint or eucalyptus extracts, although just the steam will do, too. Get a menthol cream to put under your nose...etc

Most of all, stay hydrated!! Keep a glass of liquid with you everywhere. Hot liquids are a bit more soothing to the throat.

Cuddle up with a book, blanket and a huge mug of tea and feel better, Jenny! And tell that hubby of yours you need some pampering. *hug*

Oooh - why is your husband in a place called "Dragonwood?" Does he slay dragons for a living? That would be really cool. [Smile]

Also - eat large amounts of garlic. I promise thoroughly anecdotally, with my hand on my favorite anecdote, this totally works.

You may have had an infection that you are actually fighting off yourself. I do not always get fevers with infections. I second the advice that if your tonsils don't go down within a couple of days, you go to the doctor.

OTOH, you teach school, don't you? I've also had strep without a fever. So it might not be a bad idea just to go in and get cultured to make sure you don't spread it around.

Well, I'm mostly better. But lots of kids at school are getting sick.

Dragonwood is our woods. It does have a dragon in it. She's a lovely tree that looks just like a dragon's head. Mouth, eye, nostril, horns, etc.

The hubby was working on our future residence. I'm still demanding pampering. [Wink]
