[Extended King DVD Announced

The extended-edition DVD of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King debuts on Dec. 14, with 50 minutes of footage added, Variety reported. The 4-hour, 10-minute extended-edition DVD will cost $39.99; a collector's gift set, which includes a fifth DVD with a 52-minute program about the music in the franchise, will cost $79.92, the trade paper reported.

As with the extended editions of the previous two Rings films, the expanded King will include new score music written by Oscar-winning composer Howard Shore, as well as 300 new special-effects shots, the trade paper reported.

The four-disc extended edition also includes multiple audio commentaries by director Peter Jackson and more than 30 members of the cast and crew, as well as hours of programs on the making of the movie and other bonus features, the trade paper reported.

Mmm. <adds> The EE Fellowship was about 3.5 hours long, the EE Two Towers was ~ 3.75 hours, and now this one is 4.16 hours. That's a total of 11.416 hours of LOTR!!! [Party] [Party]

<checks calendar> Nope, still September. Blast.

I think I'm about as excited for the extended edition DVD to come out as I was for the theatrical version (very excited).

Sounds okay, but I think an additional 50 minutes runs it a bit short. Why not a full two extra hours? And what about out-takes? I would love to have hours of that stuff. I want more, darn it! Give me moooorrrre!

*agrees*

That's almost three whole months!
And curses on them for not releasing this one in Nov. like the others, December is too busy for me to have a LOTR party, so now I have to wait until January. [Mad]

It was SUPPOSED to have a gag reel. I feel cheated. [Frown]

Of course, if they want to be really cool, they would re-do the scene at the Crack of Doom in Lego(tm).

Narnia, that's what I mean. Where's the gag reel?

Posted by larisse (Member # 2221) on :

Oooo... wants it, my preciousssss.

I wonder if they are planning on adding the gag reels and extra footage to the dvd set of all three as an incentive to buy it. As if we weren't planning on getting that one as well. Sheesh... don't they respect us as the crazed obsessed fans we are.

Maybe the gag reel is an easter egg, like the MTV segments on the last two.

If New Line thought-up a way to get my money twice... "good for them", I say. [Wink]

People don't seem quite as likely to say that about Lucas, even though he has done the same thing, over and over.

Lucas isn't getting my money at all.

Hey, I'm more than willing to pay Peter Jackson twice... or even thrice. He did an awesome job, and the way I figure it, the more we cough up for this stuff the more likely he is to do The Hobbit [Big Grin]

Does anybody know if the short film by Cameron Duncan the young filmaker who died of cancer and who inspired the lyrics of "Into the West" is included as one of the special features on the EE DVD? Here's a link about him: http://www.nzherald.co.nz/entertainment/entertainmentstorydisplay.cfm?storyID=3545784&thesection=news&thesubsection=general&thesecondsubsection=&reportID=56531
It would seem appropriate that it would be, as he was a special friend of the Jacksons.
