Or at least helped me on to a second interview.

I started a "Job Hunting" thread a while ago, where I was going to write all my adventures in the Job Market, and of the thrills of job seeking while holding down a job I want to leave.

I quit updating that because...

well...

it was getting depressing. The Job I really really wanted went elsewhere.

Well, today I had a long lunch with a prospective employer. We started talking about my education, which lead to which books I like to read, which lead to...

Orson Scott Card.

The employer had recently read one of OSC's collumns. He was greatly impressed with his logic.

This brought up all sorts of Taboo subject to bring up at a job interview---politics, religion, Jordan's Wheel of Time series.

Needless to say we hit it off well. He is arranging to call me back to meet with the manager later.

The job is ok, smaller salary than I want, but much bigger potential commisions. If it goes according to his plan I'll double my income. If their new marketing plan falls apart, I'll earn half my income.

I'll worry about that later.

Now I'm just happy to get a 2nd interview.

I dunno, Dag. I think it depends on which column. Recently, he's been doing pretty well articulating positions I don't happen to agree with.

Before that, though, he seemed to have more than a few "rant" columns - remembering the nasty and totally irrelevant shots he took at Edwards in one column.

Then, though, he followed up with a column in which he criticized the wholesale condemnation of personal injury lawyers that's popular in some circles.

I enjoy reading his columns the most when he is disagreeing with me in a way that seeks to challenge me rather than just get me angry.

PPS: I haven't forgotten your request, Dag, I'm just running behind schedule.

You may be right. I think part of the problem may be that on certain issues he's operating from assumptions that seem obviuous to a people who share his general world view, so he doesn't articulate them clearly. Even when I'm disagreeing with him, I can generally fill in the gaps he doesn't make explicit.

But you're right, there's definitely about three levels of quality to his political writings.

First of all, I'm not unemployed. Just woefully underemployed.

second of all, he is an ex CEO/CFO. Hence he likes OSC's conservatism. Not my favorite part of OSC's opinions. Oh well. Working for a Republican is good for company profits.

That reminds me I was working for the pharmaceutical industry when Hilary's health plan was all in the news.
