Well I've said I'd do better at college than at the pros. So better late than never. I started a Hatrack Group over at the college Pigskin PickEm ESPN site. It's week four but what the heck?

It works slightly differently. There are 10 games listed for the week. You pick the winners, and then you have to assign confidence levels to how certain you are they will happen 10 being absolutely certain and 1 being the most uncertain.

Not necessarily, there are a couple of Illinois grads or attendees around.

I guess the question is, do you pick who you want to win, or who you think will win. My problem with the Pro league so far is that I've let emotion and arbitrariness dominate my picks. Even though I'm actually more passionate about college, I'm less emotional and arbitrary about my picks.

As I said before, the one I debated the most on was the NC state Va Tech game. Notice my confidence level is 1, which means I'm not that confident either way though I picked the home team.

Your season-to-date point total is displayed on your frontpage, entry, group page (if you're in a group) and on the bottom of the leaderboard page (unless you're in the Top 50!).

So if I assign "10" confidence points to a certain game, and my team wins, then I get ten points, if I am understanding it correctly.

Well, I was right about the VT-NCST game being a good game. I was wrong about the outcome.

I think this is payback for not giving cookies to the Football team, like I said I would, after beating West Virginia with a similar set-up in '99.

Note to self: Find way to send cookies to VT, even if it's five years too late.

There is good news for me, though. I now have cable, and hence I can now watch football games!

Well I'm glad that VT game had my lowest probablity. If I get my last pick right I'll be at 54/55 points. I nearly had a heart attack when I read the Purdue-Iowa score wrong on the scrolling bar! That was my 10 pointer that purdue would win!

The way the points are tallied is if you are right, you get the number of points as your choice. If you are wrong you get zero. The maximum possible points is 10+9+8+7+6+5+4+3+
2+1=55

As a group we'll never catch up on the year with the statistics, since we started on the 4th week but oh well.

The top three people have all so far had the exact same missed pick. It was just how confident we were in the pick that differentiates our scores.

Iowa was playing AT Michigan. After Michigan lost to Notre Dame do you actually think they were going to let anyone beat them on their home turf?

Generally speaking, unless the away team is Extremely high in the polls there is even more of a home field advantage in college ball than there is in the Pros.

Oh my goodness. This weeks college picks are impossibly hard. There are maybe three that I've got any confidence in.
West Virginia Virginia Tech
Purdue Notre Dame
Colorado Missouri
Illinois Wisconsin
Iowa State Oklahoma State
South Carolina Alabama
Fresno State Louisiana Tech
Auburn Tennessee
Penn State Minnesota
LSU Georgia

Right now I'm thinking Wisconsin beating Illinios is the best bet.

If Wisconsin is at home, give that game a 10... otherwise a 9 or 8. They COULD lose, since they have no offense to speak of, without their star running back. But at home? Simply not possible. That defense, in Camp Randall, is... something like both the rock AND the hard place.

The team listed second on that list is the home team.

The doozies are the Purdue-Notre Dame, LSU-Georgia, and Auburn-Tennesee games.

Also hard to call are West Virginia-Va Tech and Minnesota-Penn State.

That's 5 of the ten that are going to be close games if nothing else. I think if I get even 7 total picks right this next week I'll be doing good.

Wisconsin will win, and yes this week is far more difficult to pick than last week...

But where is the confidence in my Gamecocks! I will be travelling to Alabama and staying with Anne Kate just so I can watch South Carolina trounce them in person.

Troy Williamson has had over 100 yards recieving for the last 3 games, and 99 yards the game before that, including a 210 yard game. Demetris Summers is one of the most talented young running backs and he will be back in the line-up next week.

Add to that the fact that Alabama's starting quarterback is out for the season and their suspect defense, and I would say it's an easy pick.

Of course there are those who say I am biased...but that's only because I have school spirit.

crap crap crap. I'm not so upset about SC winning or about TN losing as I am about FRESNO STATE letting me down. They can play smashnmout football with the best of the best at away games, yet they couldn't get past Louisiana Tech, in an away crowd the size of a high school football game.

Yeah, I'm kind of annoyed about Fresno State losing, too. Lousiana Tech? Yeesh. But I don't think its makes too much difference for pick-em because most of us lost a bunch of points on that game.

And yesterday's win may actually have been better than the win over Miami last year. I really hate the mountaineers...

Even though I lost on the Hokies again (picking against them this time) it was my 1pt game. And as a Sooner Fan first, I'm quite happy because WV was set to run the table after that game and the fewer undefeated teams at the end of the season the better.

I think so. I don't think there were originally as many games scheduled for this weekend as there are, because the hurricane delayed a bunch.
