For all the Bloomingonian Jatraqueros, do any of you play or listen to Ether Game on WFIU (NPR)?

If so, did you hear the COMPLETELY DREADFUL version of "O Canada" on it tonight? It sounded like...like...Yanni does the Canadian National Anthem. I was driving home tonight and heard it and was just...well...there are no words.

For those of you who have no clue what I'm talking about, our local NPR station has this program on Tuesday nights in which they play a series of musical excerpts (of all genres) and listeners call in and guess the title and composer and usually a bonus question. There are no prizes; it's just for the glory of the game. It's really neat, actually; there are several "regulars" that have become semi-celebrities in the Bloomington music scene.

I didn't hear it, I rarely listen to it, but last time I was in the car with a friend, he called on three or four songs it was funny. He even called allegra to tell her that he had called so she needed to switch her radio station

Posted by Allegra (Member # 6773) on :

I have never listened to it before. Well I did once but I had no idea so I stopped.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

I hear it on the way home from work (so I NEVER call in). I play along in the car, though. I do better when they play show tunes or classical; tonight's national anthem theme was just...not...happening for me.

I know one of the constant winners quite well, Janis Starcs. Ether game is cool, but his knowledge of music trivia is scary.

Posted by Heffaji (Member # 3669) on :

Now I have a reason to turn on a radio here in Bloomington.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

I've listened to it a few times, but it always makes me feel so worthless to find out how much I DON'T know about music... when it's basically my one passion!

Though sometimes I do get the answers, and that makes me feel special. [Smile]

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

fugu...oh! oh! oh! Can you tell me who he is? I was thinking, because of how the name sounded, that it was a particularly famous cello professor here. Am I right?

Of course, now that I see how you're writing it, I'm in doubt...

edited because making sense is good.

Nope, completely unrelated (well, other than the love of music). Starker's not even from the same country as Starcs, or all that nearby for that matter.

Janis Starcs runs Caveat Emptor, the used bookstore on the east side of the square.

[No No] None of you would EVER say that if you would go to one of his live concerts...

a bloomington person I didn't know about, Heffaji.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Fugu: ah! I've actually met him, as well, though I don't really know him (I've just bought books from him...one rather recently, in fact!)

And sorry, Farmgirl...my mom loves Yanni too. I just don't like the combination of a heavy beat plus orchestral sound. It's just the ultimate cheese to me.

Yeah, I've been too much of a lurker then a poster around here to attract much notice. I'm always intimidated by the huge amounts of effort that go into so many of the posts, so I feel mine pale in comparison.

Holy cow, I had no idea there were so many Bloomingtonians on here! [Big Grin] (If it wasn't obvious already, I am another, though I hardly ever post.)

All you bloomington people are at least stopping by some event at the october camping. No, there is no choice in this.

Posted by kyrie (Member # 6415) on :

yeah really you need to all go to it.

Raia, they way you learn about music, is to lisen to programs like that!

I always assumed the "harmony roadgang" were some of my old teachers, but perhaps not. Im sure I must know some of the other playres too. Im really curouis as to how may of you bloomintonions I know... there are more then I relized.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Yes you are all required to come out by the campout. Read JT Stryker's "hatrack unplugged" thread for more information.

Kyrie you know me.

Posted by kyrie (Member # 6415) on :

hehe, i know I know YOU. but a lot of the people who posted here i dont know, i think [Dont Know]

Posted by Heffaji (Member # 3669) on :

I can't say I know anyone in this thread, but no doubt I've probably seen some of you in this far too hilly town.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Haha, kyrie, I know that, but I'm not patient enough. [Wink]

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Heffaji: hilly? Hilly? Are we talking about the same place? This place is only slightly hillier than a pancake! I may be biased because of where I come from, but I wouldn't put Bloomington in the hilly category. It's not as flat as I thought it was going to be, but it still seems pretty flat to me.

Unless, of course, you meant something else by hilly...in which case, disregard this post.

So, does anyone know when the construction at the Mall is going to finish? [Smile]

(Another Bloomington person here)

Posted by Heffaji (Member # 3669) on :

Well, at home I can't even recall more then a handful of places where I need to walk uphill. Here, it's practically every 5 steps. Not that I mind too much, but my legs just aren't used to it at the beginning of the year.

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Okay, I hereby demand all you bloomington people meet me sometime soon (that is, the ones I don't already know, and you don't have to meet me altogether, I just want to say hi in person to people).

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Ryoko...I think it's supposed to open sometime this school year. I want to say they're aiming for Christmas time, but I could be utterly wrong. Next time I talk to my husband, I'll ask him. He's usually on top of all the retail goings-on in Bloomington.

Heffaji--where's home? I'm from Atlanta (and parts north of there), and it makes this place look plains-y.

fugu--are you at IU? or are you an actual person? [Smile] (and I can get away with saying that, because I AM at IU and therefore NOT an actual person)

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Heavens, there are a lot of you in Bloomington! Maybe we can have a shindig when I visit in a couple weeks... [Smile]

Posted by Allegra (Member # 6773) on :

I would definatly be up for a Bloomington Hatrack gathering. I nominate Fugu to organize it!

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I agree, something when raia is home, and then all these new people (there are 3 I had no clue about) are required to come to the campout, even if for just a few minutes. I'm a real person (wow thats the first for me to say that)

Posted by Allegra (Member # 6773) on :

I wish I could go to the campout. [Cry]

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Sure! Raia, when will you be home? We could all go out to dinner (or meet at a park, or do something relatively simple like that).

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

I vote the shelter house we occupied most of the summer, this is at Bryan park, down the hill from the pool (don't ask me road names). If I remember correctly from my conversation with Raia, she'll be home starting the 4th, for ten days, so probably till the 13th. So how about the 8th or 9th?

Posted by Heffaji (Member # 3669) on :

I actually live in a suburb of Chicago, where the largest hill there is the one you climb to get into your car. Anyway, it would be great to meet some of you so I can finally cast away that nagging feeling that the entire board is full of 4 people and their alter-egos.

I am both at IU and an actual person!

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Fugu...that's impressive!

[Hail]

Are you student, staff, faculty, or some combination thereof?

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Megan -- like breyerchic said, I'll be there from the 4th to the 13th of October... (unfortunately, I couldn't plan my visit around the time of the campout, since classes will have started back up by then). The 8th or 9th might be problematic, since that's when I think about 50 million things are being planned, but if it's a problem with classes for you IU folk, then of course we'll find time! I would love to meet all of you, I can't wait!!! [Smile]

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

Raia, I was just suggesting 8th and 9th because I thought a weekend would be good, but you suggest anything.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Honey, half the town thinks a "weekend is good"... I'm inadvertently visiting when people are in school. But again, whatever you guys say. If it's a problem, we can definitely do a weekend. If you guys are ok with mid-week, that might be better!

as far as I know, anything but a thursday night works for me.

Posted by Allegra (Member # 6773) on :

I am very busy, but I can make most days work.

Posted by Heffaji (Member # 3669) on :

I'm open any night in the evening while I'm off at class all day on Tuesday, Thursday, and up to 2 on Friday.

Posted by blacwolve (Member # 2972) on :

Mary and I are stealing Raia for one night that weekend, but other than that I'm good and in town.

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

I think I'm being stolen several times over the weekend, but not sure... but yeah, all of this sounds good!

Oh, and breyerchic, the street you're thinking of is Woodlawn.

Posted by blacwolve (Member # 2972) on :

You mean we didn't tell you about this already?

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

Sorry, I didn't make myself clear! Yeah, Mary e-mailed me about it, I meant that others are planning on the weekend too, because of school purposes.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Whenever you guys decide to meet, I'll be there if I can.

actually about half of bloomington is really hilly, a lot like brown county. But the ice glaciers stoped about half way through town so half of it is really flat.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Like I said...I think my view is a little biased. [Smile]

Posted by Raia (Member # 4700) on :

All around campus is really flat, Megan. [Smile]

I know, I live down the street from the music school! I can't believe I lived this close to you, and we never met, Megan!

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

That is pretty astonishing, actually...You and Allegra both frequent the place that I've called my home-away-from-home for the past 4 years (and a bit). Maybe I should wear a nametag or something "Megan, Music theorist and Jatraquera." Or get a bumper sticker that says, "I visit hatrack.com!"

As to the hilliness...I'm comparing it to north Georgia, I guess. The hills around here seem ...well...low, compared those that pop up in the southern fringes of the Appalachians. Once you get out of town a bit, it's a little hillier, but it still seems relatively flat to me.

Edited to add: oh, and it may be silly of me, but I'm inexplicably pleased that a thread I started is on its second page. Yay!

Considering how many of us there are in Bloomington, I'm always expecting someone to notice whenever I'm browsing through here in public.

Hey, if any of the IU people are in the information commons right now, I'm working there. [Big Grin]

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

it's hilly by my house. Yeah it would be so cool to meet a hatracker accidently that we didn't already know about(or had never met).

Posted by Allegra (Member # 6773) on :

I knew that there were a lot of hatrackers in Bloomington, but I thought I knew them all. I have been craving a hatrack gathering since I got back from kamacon. It is good to know that we could have one just with Bloomington folks.

Posted by Heffaji (Member # 3669) on :

I'm over in the information commons too right now.

Posted by breyerchic04 (Member # 6423) on :

scream "I love Hatrack" as loud as you can, megan's post was less than three hours ago

Sorry, Heffaji...I got off work there at noon. Now I'm back in the music library (where it is much more peaceful).

You know...part of me feels like I should be nervous, since I keep posting my location online. Geez, I could get a stalker or something...

[Angst]

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Yeah, pity the poor stalker.
