KarlEd is one of my absolute favorite jatraqueros. I, too, hope to get to meet him someday. [Big Grin]

KarlEd speaks with passion that has no scent of exclusion. He loves what he loves, he is what he is, and he does it for reasons of strength and joy and reaching farther and higher as a human being.

He's a man. I'm sure he puts his pants on one leg at a time. [Smile]

But he is pretty darn cool. I know he thinks about letting Hatrack go every now and then, but I'm selfish enough to ask him to stay for my sake and for the sake of having him as a role model here.

Good God people, he's just caught up with his house, not fleeing the country.

As far as I know, the Sunday morning service people haven't chased him out with pitchforks and flaming torches.

Or should that have been "flaming pitchforks and torches"?

Awe shucks, guys. [Blushing]

I haven't left. As some have noted, I'm mostly busy with the new house. And I've been mostly lurking when I have been on. (Most of the interesting thread have already been discussed beyond anything constructive I could add by the time I get to reading them.)

But it's nice to know I'm missed. Margarita's on the house for everyone! (Or the drink of your choice if you eschew the heavenly nectar that is a good margarita!)

Oh, and I've already run into a lesbian couple, two elderly gay men, and a bi-sexual woman who all live within walking distance of my house. And there's a really nice 87 year old ex-biker-babe who lives across the street. So while it looks like Beaver Cleaver might live in this town, it sure ain't no Mayfield, USA. [Big Grin]

(Oh, and the Church people weren't out this Sunday. I don't know if the lawn services were just a Summer thing or if it was just last Sunday's weather. You don't think I scared them inside, do you??)

Wait a minute. You've been there 3 weeks and already met five people that live that close to you? Is there some secret sign I should know about besides the flag? I won't tell anyone.

i don't think i can name 5 people on my block.

woohoo! margaritas!

The trick is to give up on the house looking "in order" anytime soon and just hold a backyard barbecue and invite all the neighbors to meet you in all your unorganized, un-pretentious glory. That's how I met the ex-biker-chick and a new friend through whom I met the bi-sexual woman a week later.

That's also how I met the semi-scary headbanger dude who rents a unit in the house behind mine with his very nice wife who was unfortunately out of town for the BBQ. And I also met a retired couple that lives two doors over from the ex-biker-chick. They are super-cool. The husband keeps a video recorder running in infra-red in his living room in order to catch ghosts. He's promised to show me some he's caught on tape if I visit them sometime. And I met a very nice mother of two who came over with her kids. Her husband didn't come over even though they live right next door. That, coupled with the uncomfortable experience that was actually giving him the invitation makes me wonder if he is just generally anti-social or if it's of a more specific kind, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt for now.

The lesbian couple I met at a back-alley bead store just a block from my house, which Chris and I discovered while exploring the neighborhood. When things slow down we're going to try to get a beading group together.

Okay -- I'm just dying to know how you found out all these people were "lesbian, gay and bi-sexual". [Big Grin] Somehow I can't just picture you walking around meeting people from your neighborhood, shaking their hands and saying, "Hi, I'm gay -- how about you?" [ROFL] Did they offer this information out of the blue?

I know a guy who does that after a few drinks. It's hilarious.

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Well, the lesbian couple fit the stereo-type enough that I suspected when they walked into the bead-store. Turned out they were friends of the lady behind the counter and it came out in the conversation that they were "partners".

I've only "officially" met one of the two elderly gay men. Neither of them are openly gay, but it seems to be an open secret that they are. To be fair, maybe they aren't, but they sure fit the stereotype and the one I haven't officially met made all the right motions of trying to "cruise" Chris and I on the street the first day we visited Hanover. (ick)

The bi-sexual woman is best friends of a straight friend we met when she waited on our table at the "Famous Hot Wiener" restaurant down the block. We invited her over for a beer on the porch after she got off work last Saturday and she brought her friend. We also had friends (a straight couple) visiting from MD, and the conversation turned to how accepting of an openly gay couple Hanover would be, which led to the acceptability of homosexuality in general and its prevalence in Hanover, which prompted our straight friend to say how he found the whole idea icky but as long as no one tried anything with him he was OK with it, which prompted the friend of our new friend to disclose that she didn't find anything icky about women at all, "in fact . . . "

But I don't want to give the impression that we're all obsessed with sexuality. It's just that the topic does come up naturally a lot. [Smile]

[ROFL] You do know, don't you, that if I, as a straight person, had posted that comment, I would be jumped all over by everyone for "stereotyping" gay people.....
[Wink] FG

Posted by KarlEd (Member # 571) on :

Not by me. I'm of the camp that thinks most stereotypes become such for a good reason.

That's not to say there are dangers involved in stereotyping, but that's another thread entirely. [Big Grin]

I have no ability in "spotting" gay people whatsoever. I was in a bar once and had a great chat with some guy for about half an hour.

Afterwards, my friends told me he was hitting on me. I thought they were pulling my leg, until I saw the guy dancing with another guy.

To be fair, I apparantly never recognize it when women hit on me, either.

Yes, you probably would. [Wink]

Three cheers for KarlEd! Hope the house thing is going well, and glad to hear about your nice new neighbors.

Don't be too hard on the straight father of two. I think Ron might be a bit uncomfortable around a gay couple, mostly because he spent his youth well-dressed and gorgeous, so he was something of a mark for young gays on the prowl. That will tend to make a straight guy jumpy. Then again, he could just be a jerk. *shrug* Give the guy some time. [Smile]

I recently showed a LJ acquaintance the pic of me in the Arwen costume. We were talking about Halloween. Anyway, she said, "My GOD! Is that YOU? You're very FETCHING *pervs* " and that made me a bit nervous. But anyway...

Great to see you! [Group Hug] [Hat]

Actually, it's not an obsession with sexuality, but when you belong to a sub-culture that has persecution issues from the mainstream, you tend to look for and identify like-minded souls.

Substitute the sexual orientation notations for anything else like "hippies" or "geeks" or "ethnic group" or even "religious group" and you'll have a good idea.

My buddy has tried to explain the concept of "gaydar" to me with limited success, but in the process of accepting your sexuality, I suspect it's as much a survival trait as it is a heightened form of people-reading.

I was with a friend driving around Indianapolis one summer, when we saw some sort of fair in the park downtown. We went to go check it out.

It wasn't until we were in the middle of the fair that I finally figured out what it was about. Here we were, two guys together in the middle of Gay Pride Indianapolis.

I went to Indy Pride this last summer, and I would think it would be obvious what it is from a mile away. There were rainbows everywhere, drag queens, gay couples holding hands, and lesbians with their *shudder* matching mullets.

Dang karlEd, can I take a rain check on that 'rita? (mmmmm)

As for the anti-social dad...you know, my hubby is the one that never shows up anywhere, no matter the gender, race, religion or sexuality of the hosts. He really is just totally anti-social, and that is probably the case with this guy.

Larisse,
I've done a few braceletes and a couple of beaded bags. (I don't really care for "amulet" bags, preferring to do something in a more practical size.) I made my mom a bag large enough to fit her credit cards and a few bills, and I've made a couple of "club bags" or dress purses (bags with beaded straps just large enough to hold a credit card or a few bills and maybe a lipstick or small compact). I've also made a few small items for friends and co-workers. I made a daisy-chain strap for a co-worker's badge, and a couple of small bracelets.

Lately I've been working in free-form peyote stitch, and I'm trying to make a "mer-man" out of free-form sculptural peyote stitch. The house has really put the brakes to my beading lately, but it's also added to my project list. I'm planning to make a couple of beaded curtains for a couple of the doorways in my house.

One of these days I'll probably put some of this stuff online.
