By the way, the sad commentary here is the fact that I think, deep down, EVERYONE is far more interested in the results of the '08 or the '12 elections then they are about the current set. Why? Because we're optimists, and we think that sometime in the future, one side just MIGHT have a candidate worth voting for.

Actually I think people care a lot about this election. Conservatives seem to think GWB is God (I don't) and liberals seem to think he's the devil. In an AOL "insta poll" during the convention tonight I think somewhere between 80 and 90% said this election was the most important event of their entire lives. Above even 9/11 which all of them should have been alive for. Although 9/11 wasn't a choice it was, yes/no/unsure.

I think there's less fist fighting because Dems and Reps won't even go to the same bars anymore. I'm not sure why, but this seems like one of the most emotionally charged elections since Vietnam. I'm not sure why because I don't think Bush is the devil and I don't think Kerry will destroy the American way of life. I think Kerry will do a much worse job, but this election will be footnote in history by the time I'm dead.

In Florida? I can sell my vote for a lot more than that down here.
Just because the election will have relatively little significance to me in comparison to my entire life doesn't mean I don't care. Why do people vote for city council members when clearly the effect of those elections will be immeasurably small?

Uh, nfl, the city council elections will probably affect you far more directly than any presidential election, ever, often directly impacting your property taxes, service fees, and further city development (where goes the sewage treatment plant? How are areas zoned? how much do we spend on making our streets nice?).

Whatever, personally I care much more about elections with wider importance, I'm sure there's some trivial election that people still vote in and care about even though it doesn't matter much.

Somehow I doubt you would extort me. (That was a compliment, not a request to be proven wrong. ) If I vote it may be for Bush; as long as things are the way they are I might as well pick the person who might save me more money. I will probably not, though; I am not even registered yet. Of course I might still decide to waste my vote for another or no candidate.

If you want the one who'll get you the most money, unless you're making a lot of money, you want Kerry. He supported and still supports by far most of the tax cuts that have been enacted: the big beefs the Democrats (and conservative think tanks, and alan greenspan) have are with the much, much larger tax cuts that happen late in Bush's second term/after he leaves office.
In particular, Kerry supports all the tax cuts that are likely to benefit you, and if anything is likely to reduce taxes on you. You're probably far below the income brackets he'd even consider raising taxes that would impact them for.
