I could probably photoshop Hobbes' face on an appropriate body. [Evil Laugh]

I want to know who goes with which month?

And why?

I'm determined not to let this degrade into yet another Jenny Gardener worship thread (not that there's anything wrong with that). [Smile]

Well, thanks Kylie. At least some-one took the hint.

And of course, I think my month should be shared with you - the girls down-under look. I could have a kangaroo and you could have a sheep...

Nothing like a popularity contest to make people feel like shit.

Seriously, now any girl who's posted her picture on foobonic or any other hatrack spinoff forum, who also posts a fair bit, and doesn't get a nomination, is probably going to feel slighted.

So I nominate everyone.

Okay, I was gonna more or less keep my mouth shut, but that's never been a strength, so here goes.

Regardless of the fact that people's feelings have a strong potential for getting hurt by this little game, why in the blue blazes would anyone want to be in a "Girls of Hatrack" calendar in the first place? Infantile. Don't try to tell me the idea behind this isn't a cheesecake calendar... and I acknowledge and accept the fact that men and women look at this sort of thing differently. But I still believe that running into the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit calendar and the like has done just huge amounts of harm to many young women's self-esteem. And I find the idea of a bunch of guys sitting here and evaluating which women they want to see in a "Girls of Hatrack" calendar not merely insulting but repugnant.

Yeah, sometimes it's fun to look good. I would be lying if I said I don't enjoy attention, and I'm not really mature enough to be able to honestly say I only like it when it comes based on my postings and my ideas and my witty charm and not when it comes based on my looks. But if I wanted people judging and ranking me based on my looks, I'd go enter a beauty pagent. Don't hold your breath.

I think you might mean to say that you find it repugnant to do it publicly because surely you don't believe that privately guys and girls don't talk about who's good looking all the time? I'm guessing you don't find that repugnant? Or do you?

I think there's a difference between saying someone's cute and and ranking and evaluating them against other people. It's not the public vs private context, it's the oooh, we've got 12 months to fill, let's discuss and provide reasons for who gets in.

For instance, I would not be at all insulted if someone who had never met me happened to see my picture for the first time and post in a public forum "Hmmmmm. ElJay's freakin' gorgeous." I probably wouldn't respond to it, it's a throw-away. No big deal either way, kinda flattering. But why in the world would we need to turn it into a competition?

I was an ugly duckling, folks, and I did my change into a swan rather late. I remember exactly how much attention guys paid to me before, and how much after. And I don't necessarily think that's wrong... physical attraction/chemestry is a big part of life, and it's not going away. Talking about who you're attracted to is not objectifying. Picking who you want to see in a calendar is. Maybe it's too fine a line, but it looks like it's drawn in neon to me.

CT, you beat me to it, how about we just change this into a mutual admiration thread? I really like you, and I'm so sorry you couldn't join us last weekend. I can't wait to meet you, will you come to Dana's pre-wedding midwest ladies Henna party in St Paul? I promise no cameras.

Farmgirl, I hope you can make it, too. I didn't get to spend nearly enough time with you in Chicago. And I didn't realize when you were getting ready for church that you weren't coming back, so I didn't even get to say goodbye to you and IvyGirl. So glad I got to talk to you a little Friday night.

Eljay -- a pre-wedding Henna party sounds fun -- didn't realize you were putting one together. We certainly plan to hopefully go to DKW & Bob's wedding --at least out where she ends up putting all the Hatrackers when there are too many of us for the reception...

Yes -- we kind of quietly slipped out Sunday morning -- I hate goodbyes (it was hard enough saying goodbye to my sister after church). Most everyone was still asleep after the fire alarm thing, so we went on to church, and since it was on the far west side of Chicago (Naperville) we just headed home from there. I really wish I had spent a lot more time talking with other Hatrackers there -- there were so many that I didn't get beyond the "hello" with....

See I wasn't figuring the calendar in terms of nudity or beauty at all. I was trying to fit in terms of interest. Like for example mackillian likes snowboarding and fencing. So should she end up in a winter or summer month. Or both, and in proper snowboarding or fencing attire in each.

It should be based on what OUR favorite month is, not whatever the guys think.

I have a love-hate relationship with December. Christmas Birthdays kind of suck But I feel more passionately about it than any other month of the year. So I guess I'd pick it because it is the only month I'm less than ambivalent about as just another month of the year. (And, because it is so dang cold here in Chicago I would probably be in clothing that resembles an eskimo, if you could see my nose you'd be extremely lucky)

So what is your favorite month?

Damn. Now I have to find someone else to nominate..... [Evil]

ElJay, can we just pretend that I haven't read any of your posts and am just comenting on your beautiful pictures? [Hail]

Does it make it better or worse than my wife agrees that the pics were good, and that you are pretty? [Blushing]

I think this wasn't intended to exclde anyone, it probably just seemed like a fun way to extend KamaCon, and maybe allow the poor saps like my wife and I who couldn't go to KamaCon to share in the fun.

I would have been interested in having a calander, but to tell you the truth I find it an obnoxious assumption that the only reason I would want one is that I am a guy, so therefore I must want it to be all bikinis.

Not that I have an objection to swimwear, but if that is all I would want I wouldn't be looking at Hatrack for it, no offence intended. I would simply buy one of the many available swimsuit issues.

God knows I couldn't have wanted one because of I wish I could have met them in person.....right?

I think part of my problem with months of the year is that I grew up in Southern California. The seasons there are wind, rain, fire and flood. You don't get the distinctive seasons that exist in most parts of the world.

As far as that goes the warmer months are my favorite seasons though July and August can get a bit hot. I still since I've been up here haven't really gotten out to play in the snow. I keep wondering if I try to make time to do so, if it will improve my opinon of December through February. February in particular is pretty bleak. Still haven't ever made a snowman. I need to get around to that one of these days.

I don't see really trying to redeem to idea of the calendar. "Girls of..." connotes booty in my mind. So I thought we were just kidding around.

Even the "well so and so could be doing this..." goes down the same road. We are evaluated by our roles, by some activity that impresses others. So I get to be folding towels, I guess. Actually, I just had a big fight with my husband because he always me to critique his marketing materials and then he proceeds to refute all my suggestions. So if I seem a little on edge, I apologize. And I shouldn't say "always". I've just never known it not to happen.

Theca, you're welcome, and I hope you also make it to the Henna party. I'm thinking probably January or February, so we're not asking people to travel twice so close together.

Kwea, like I said, I'm fine with people commenting on my looks in general. That goes for you AND your wife. [Wink] I'm just going to take it with a grain of salt... because I had absolutly nothing to do with it. I got lucky in the gene pool. It's part of who I am, but it does not define me.

And I didn't mean to imply that people were thinking we'd all be in bikinis... 'cause believe me, you ain't getting a picture of me in a bikini. Just that from the tone of the thread, a cheesecake calendar of some sort was implied. And I agree that there's nothing wrong with liking to look at pictures of beautiful women in bikinis. I enjoy looking at pictures of beautiful women in bikinis. For one more reiteration, it's the judging and ranking I object to.

Now I'm going to work. Have fun, all... can't wait to see what this looks like in 9 hours when I get back. Muhahahahahaha!

NP, pooka, I was simply pointing out the other side of things.

I thought it was just a fun thing to think about, and it made me wish I had been at KamaCon a bit more.

Not that I didn't already wish it in the first place.

Now, had the suggestion been "Hatrack Girls Gone Wild", you might have had a point... [Taunt] [ROFL] [Evil]

Still, who said anything about you folding laundry? It's true, we are always being judged...on looks, attitude, activities...but that doesn't mean that those "judgments" have any affect on you, not unless you let them.

I think I could see you as Miss Febuary, sitting in front of a fire reading an OSC book, with snow in the window. Or maybe reading a paper, as you see by your posts to be interested in politics, at least a little. [Kiss]

Well said, CT.

I think it's the difference between treating people as they are and as you think they should be. If you hold people responsible for what they "should" be, then you can say things that are insulting, and it's their fault for getting hurt.

If you actually want to deal with humans and be a part of reality, you have to accept and deal with people as they are.

You know I suddenly realized Richard Berg's comment was probably really cryptic to those who weren't at KamaCon, it didn't even make sense to me for a while.

The "three star letter" comment didn't have anything to do with appearance whatsoever! You see I gave the crazy grandma letter binder I have to Tom Davidson while at KamaCon. I had had them organized in chronological order for a while and had ranked the letters with stars for their general outrageousness.

If you see a "three star" letter, you know you've got a really entertaining one where Grandma is on a tear! But in the reading frenzy the letters were strewn all over the floor for a while. Mayday did a Herculean job of sorting them out and they left organized far better than they arrived. There have been rumors of a Grandma Blog upcoming, with the names changed to protect the innocent.

Hmm. I just got back and was reading this thread. Throughout the entire thing, I just kept thinking how funny this is. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, right? I've pointed out people I thought were attractive in magazines to Mr. Opera and he has often thought they were quite UNattractive, and vice versa.

Occasional, as far as the insecurities here, I think this thread has brought up far more outrage. I've been judged on my looks (like everyone else) my entire life, and the last place I ever expected to be judged was Hatrack.

I should explain more. To tell the truth, I felt that all the Hatrack people I met at the Con were attractive. I tend to find people I like attractive, and I liked all of them. Not getting nominated for a calendar didn't bother me - I feel confident of my hotness. [Wink] I was just surprised to see this kind of thing even being discussed. We're Hatrack, and we value people, not their appearances. I do like the idea of a calendar with everyone as a big happy group just because we rawk.

I guess I have come to grips with who I am and what I look like. Not saying I wish I wan't some hunk of a guy, but that will never be so I think I have come to accept that. Frankly, marriage has probably helped to sooth my concerns and contributed to my personal security.

I guess a "beauty contest" has become the least of my problems. Because of that, it surprised me at the rage felt by some and even was a bit amusing. Comes off as prepubesent rantings equal to the accusations of the same for even bringing the topic up.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

These sorts of discussions always remind me of an incident in Champaign-Urbana.

Hooters decided to open up there and a group of "feminists" (as much as I hate to use the word) decided to protest on their opening day. The waitresses came outside and offered the feminists to come inside and meet them and hang out and have a beer, promising them that they really were nice girls and missing the entire point of the protest.

My name is Bob the Lawyer, and I have been known to make snap judgements about people based on their appearance when they deviate from my "norm." Sometimes I'm right, sometimes I'm wrong and most of the time I never get to know the person well enough to find out.

It comes with being human.

Or maybe I'm just a terrible person. The jury is still out on that.

(Not that I'm pro popularity contests, but people saying they've never made judgements about someone based on their appearance baffle me.)

I agree. Of course everyone makes judgements based on appearance. Whether you find most people attractive or not, some people will inevitably be more attractive than others to you.

I think the problem many are having - aside from the vomit factor of popularity contests - is that it's just silly and could possibly hurt someone's feelings. I certainly think there are several people on this forum who would rank pretty high on my internal attractiveness monitor, but I'm not gonna start a thread listing them. In this way Hatrack is a lot like a family - if you include only some publicly, then you leave others out.

I think I've said my piece now. I just hate seeing this kind of thing on Hatrack, just like I hate seeing debates turn into name-calling, which doesn't happen very often, thank goodness.

I have the simple solution . . . we have surely had enough group get-togethers that there is at least one for each month.

Ta-daaa!!!!

And probably, something COULD be put together that is very Hatrack based and the Card's could sell it and off-set the costs of running this joint . . .

Actually, I love the idea of a Hatrack Calendar. But I think each month should be a collage of people (female *and* male) who are willing to be on it and are interested in or have been nominated to be on that month. No popularity contest, just a calendar Jatraqueros could purchase and have in their home as a reminder of the people who mean so much to them. No one need be left out, but people could opt to not be included.

A couple years ago, my parents gave all us kids such a calendar of our family, each month having a collage of pictures. I loved it!

January could be Dobie month... February could be hug thread month... March could be the glad-this-isn't-an-onanism-month... december could be the last post month... Thor could supply some of the artwork...

Or it could be the best pics, regardless of who is in them.

I saw some awsome shots Mack took, and I loved finding out who those people were.

I will add pics from the WMASS Picnic this weekend, feel free to use the group photo I will try to get.
