Foobonic is closing down. The archive will be taken down sometime today. HERE IS THE LINK FOR THE ARCHIVE. Be sure to look in the hatrack and jatraqueros folders if you're having problems finding your pictures.
Since the other threads are getting kind of long and I'm feeling special, I'm making my very own thread.
As you know, foobonic has been kind enough to host the many Hatrack photos. I am now the mod in charge of all the Hatrack stuff after Ralphie got too busy. Anyone who would like to have their photo(s) added (removed, etc.) should send an email to me (containing the photos, of course), so that I can upload them for you (email's in my profile.
To help thank Andre (foobonic) for his generosity, donations are much appreciated (see the left side banner for info on donating to help him with the operating expenses). Andrei

I just realized that my picture is almost 4 years old. I emailed a new one and sent a little donation.
I was wondering if there is any way to include links to people's online photo albums (Yahoo Photos, etc.) on foobonic? That might help make things easier.
I'll have to check on that Mrs.M, I'm don't if it's possible or not.
Also, it may take a bit of time to get any new photos up at the moment. Foobonic has gone wonky and foo is trying to figure out what's going on (if the whole site is going to crash or what)....
I'll let you know when new photos are indeed up.

BannaOJ -- how come you don't have a folder of your own up on Fooboonic under the individual ones? Pics of you and Steve or something?
Farmgirl
Posted by BannaOj (Member # 3206) on :
Because getting a picture of Steve is only slightly less difficult than getting him to the dentist. In the nearly five years we've been together I have one good picture of both of us together and maybe 4 others that actually have him in it.
The last time he went to the dentist was the end of 1999, I think when something went badly wrong with something and he was in a lot of pain. Now he's been employed with decent dental benefits for two years and I still haven't managed to get him to go for a regular checkup and maintenance.
AJ
(His mother did take some pictures of both of us when she came to visit, and she said she'd send them to me eventually. However I wouldn't put it past him to intercept the mail either!)
(Oh yeah and actually putting a picture of him on the internet would cause him to have conniptions. He values his anonymity even more than CT... really it's pretty easy for him to be anonymous with a name like Steve Jones)
(On the other hand if I did scan the one good picture I have of him and I in, and put it on foobonic, he'd probably never know. I do have a few pictures of me scattered around my website for the dogs.)

ludosti will let you know when they are up
Farmgirl
Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :
In case you're wondering, ludosti, I started each photo file name with "Z" for a reason: Since Fooboonic sorts them alphabetically, I wanted to keep the bunch together as a 'new' group until everyone has had a chance to see them instead of having to sort through the five pages that are there to figure out which ones are new. Feel free to change the file names after that time if you wish.
You're doing a great job with Foobonic, by the way.
I'll try to get those other 10 to you this weekend.
Farmgirl
Posted by ludosti (Member # 1772) on :
Actually, foobonic doesn't sort them alphabetically unless I tell it to. By default, everything is put in there by upload date. I just thought that alphabetically would make more sense....

Hey Ludosti, I posted a comment on the Jesus picture that somehow seems to have jumped to another picture. It makes absolutely no sense on the second picture. The only thing I can think of is that it might be because I had two foobonic windows open at the same time, though I've had problems with double posting even though I've only clicked my mouse once before.
Can you go to the recent comments part of foobonic (easiest way to see the double post) and take care of the other misplaced comment?

A lot of people think I'm asian or an anime-lover because of my name. "Teshi" is actually an african name, although I didn't pick it because of that, or its meaning. I just like it. .
And Noemon you've guessed my secret. I'm a dwarf.

Black hair rawks.
A word of caution though - if you wish to dye it lighter again, go to a hairdresser. Black dye adheres to the hair way longer than other dyes. If you do redye it, the (natural) roots can go one colour and the dyed ends stay black...
(Here speaks a woman who had beautiful auburn roots and skanky pale black ends... I was going through my red hair phase. I think I'm out of it now.)

Apparently, I need to pay more attention. I just read the bits about the Hatrack Unplugged pictures that I took and my "ass fetish." Let me just say that I do, on occasion, deliberately take pictures that focus on the back end, but this was not the case on the camping trip. I must admit, though, that a thorough inventory of all the pictures I've taken since I received my first camera in third grade would yield a rather embarrassing number of butt shots. I blame my subconscious, and I'll be sure to bring the phenomenon up at my next session.
P.S. This is exactly why I try to avoid taking pictures of people. Flowers don't have inappropriate features.

Also in foobonic news, I talked with Andre earlier this week to get the scoop on the donation situation. Thus far, the hosting of the site has been done by a friend for next to nothing. But, because of the space and bandwidth the site uses, this perk is disappearing. So, what he wants to do is switch over to a dedicated server with all the bandwidth he'd ever need, plus roll out a new, slicker, prettier format. The bad part is that this will cost about $1500 (for a year). So, either he'll raise the money, or he won't and foobonic will go away. He's said he'll try to warn me if it comes to the site disappearing and promised that if it does, he will make sure that I can get ahold of all the hatrack stuff. So, folks, that's the situation.....
Posted by Telperion the Silver (Member # 6074) on :
Oh no!
Maybe we can set up a PayPal donation thing?
Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :
He has a donation link already set up on his site, which uses PayPal, if I remember right.
Posted by ludosti (Member # 1772) on :
Farmgirl is correct. Following the donation link leads you to PayPal, where you can donate to the cause.

I could always install gallery on my webspace. I have lots of bandwidth and disk space I'm not using. Without the, uh, "other" side of foobonic, I could probably handle the needed bandwidth.
Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :
I've never explored "foobonic" beyond our Hatracker portion...
Posted by ludosti (Member # 1772) on :
That's good to know. You'll be hearing from me if foo goes the way of the dodo....
Andre always said that the Hatrack portion is not taxing in terms of space and bandwidth (which is why he was happy to host it), so it shouldn't be too difficult to find it a home elsewhere (I would hope).

So you think that foobonic should issue some type of guarunteed certificate? Mayhaps a commercial paper or a equipment certificate? Maybe he should issue common stock or some kind of bond.

Looks like he's got just over a week to raise the funds to pay for the first quarter (he found out they'll let him do quarterly payments) - he has to do something by the 17th.

Posted by quidscribis (Member # 5124) on :
Also, if someone else is going to offer to host the Hatrack photo portion of it, we should know what amount of hard drive space and bandwidth it takes. Do you have any idea or can you find out?
Posted by ludosti (Member # 1772) on :
When I talked to foo last week he said he hadn't had much in the way of donations. He's going to try to cover the cost himself, but I'm not sure if that'll be possible.
I don't know the info on the Hatrack space/bandwidth use. I'll ask Andre.

Please ask him. As long as it's not a huge amount, I can host it on madowl without any problems.

He said it takes up about 4 gigs of space. Bandwidth-wise, he doesn't know.
Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :
I'm trying to figure out what takes up 4 gigs of space, exactly.

I assume that's all the pictures in the Hatrack section of foobonic.

I couldn't host that much on the MUD server right now... it barely handles the MUD its an aging iMac. However I might get a new server this summer, in which case, assuming I can work out with Skidmore a way of keeping it online, I should be able to handle that.

Four GIGS for JUST the hatrack space?
Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :
Last night, in a fit of weirdness, I downloaded the entire Jatraqueros section- not the other meeting sections and stuff, but just the Jatraqueros section (yes, it took a while). It was about 200MB of data. That's probably the biggest section and a lot of that data was wasted space because people uploaded rediculously huge, uncompressed jpegs. I think I found one that was 6mb. 6 effing MB! That could easily be cut down. It would just take some time to compile all of the images and run them through a batch processor to cut them down to a maximum of 800x600 with a compression level of about %85. That's plenty for people just to look at pictures of other jatraqueros.
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
You're weird.
Posted by Kama (Member # 3022) on :
at least he doesn't have a girly name anymore.
Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :
Did you download all the alternate sizes of the images?
Posted by ludosti (Member # 1772) on :
Yeah, I was guessing there were some huge uncompressed images. I think the 4G estimate includes all the meeting folders and all the ridiculously huge jpegs. If we were to host it all elsewhere, I was going to research a resizer I could wash everything through first to cut down on the wasted space (cause opening and resizing everything in Photoshop would be way too huge a PITA).
You're weirdly great, PC.
Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :
fugu, by "alternate sizes" do you mean the images that Gallery created or the ones that were originally uploaded? I went through and downloaded all of the original, uncompressed images.
I thought that I would have enough webspace for this thing, but I only have 500mb available. If I were to leave the files uncompressed, It'd easily push the 500mb limit. Even with resizing, I'd have probably 2-300mb taken up.
Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :
Gallery stores multiple versions of each pic, both the uncompressed ones and smaller ones, including thumbnails and a mid-range size for particularly large pics.
Posted by Primal Curve (Member # 3587) on :
I'm familiar with how Gallery works, as I've installed it on multiple websites.
Posted by mackillian (Member # 586) on :
I've got over six gigs free on my server.
Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

He's going to take a look at the file/directory structure and see if there's a relatively easy way for people to locate their items. He'll let me know what he discovers.
Hopefully it'll be doable and he can put everything up for about a week to give people time to offload everything.

Isn't Hobbes on a mission trip? In other words, is someone getting his pics for him?
Posted by ludosti (Member # 1772) on :
Good question. Anyone want to volunteer to grab Hobbes pics for him?
If I have time today, I will be attempting to offload as many of the Hatrack pictures as I can.

Annie is on her mission too... I have a slow connection so I can't download her pics for her.

I'ma sticky this for the day.

Last night someone recommended a Firefox plugin that allows a person to download photos en masse. I haven't had time to check it out yet, but it occurrs to me that, assuming that we have enough storage space somewhere, we could grab all of the hatrack related pictures using that utility and post them to Flickr or something.
My computer is antiquated, though, and has a relatively small (and relatively full) hard drive, so I'm not the best candidate for doing this.
Anybody got the space and the time to do this?

I'm using wget to retrieve everything. Its been running all night, and so far I have everything except the last three folders of stuff (I think the only hatracker among that stuff is Troubador).
So far its a bit over 8 gigabytes. I have nowhere to host that much, but I can send pics as people request them, after foobonic is gone for good.
I suggest the owners of photos upload them to Flickr, personally.

Thanks fugu!

Thank you, Russell! That was very nice of you, and is appreciated.

Russell, you're lovely.

Excellent fugu!! That's wonderful of you! And yes, I agree that photo owners should be responsible for putting them up wherever they want them.
My day is turning out to be so busy I don't think I'll even get a chance to get anything else downloaded. Good thing I got all my stuff yesterday afternoon.
Thanks for the sticky Papa so I don't have to worry about bumping it throughout the day.

If anyone wants webspace, I have a gallery at my site, I'd be more than happy to host some files.

My work computer is running a webserver and hosting 8 gigs wont be a problem. I've uploaded 33 GB of (legal) bittorrent data without anyone bothering me, so. Maybe I could wget it as well anyway.

I think all I had was my Bob-n-Dana con (wedding) photos, which I had lost on my own computer due to glitches/viruses/reformatting.

For some insane reason, my hosting provider upgraded my site to 20GB and unlimited bandwidth. I'd be willing to provide 15 GB or so for a decent length of time if you'd like to arrange to host the files on princeclan so that people can download when they want and you wouldn't have to respond to a bunch of emails.
I'd prefer that it just be a directory structure, not an application, but I'm not totally averse to an application if needed.
Let me know and I'll set up a subdomain and give you rights to start uploading, fugu.

Holy crap. Who's your provider, Dag? That's an awful lot of storage.

I think at some point, Foo said that the hatrack portion of Foobonic only took up about 4 gig. If you cleaned up all the other crap that I'm sure fugu downloaded (there were some other large albumns on Foobonic unrelated to Hatrack), cropped, resized and compressed some of them, I'm sure you could easily get the whole down to around 1 gig.
Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :
Wow, it was going in a different order than I had thought, so it took a while longer . . . for a total of 16.45 Gigabytes. However, by far most of this is not hatracker stuff. I'll comb through them and delete some of the larger folders (only non-hatracker stuff).
After that I'll get on putting stuff in your space, Dagonee. I'm busy through the end of this week, so likely early next week.
Posted by Dagonee (Member # 5818) on :
OK. I'll set it up and send you the info.
Posted by CaySedai (Member # 6459) on :
Apparently Doteasy has an affiliate plan, so if anyone signs up, they can try to give Dagonee credit, which in turn could earn him some money.

Also, I zipped up several of the folder names I recognised. So you can download the whole thing with one click. The hatrack zip is 340 MB.
Are there any plans to set up another photo album site for hatrack users?
Another sad loss is the metadata: the names of the images as well as the comments. Anyway we can get a dump of the database?

I'd suggest people just use an appropriate tag at flickr; jatraqueros, prolly.
Posted by human_2.0 (Member # 6006) on :
Do we want to upload the old foobonic images to flickr?
Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :
I'd let people do that individually.
Posted by ludosti (Member # 1772) on :
I let foo know that the Hatrack people had gotten their pics, so he will be taking the archive down shortly.

Argh argh argh argh argh.
Foobonics also used to host the photo album for VBS. I've been skimming through the different links but I can't seem to locate that one. Does anyone know if the VBS one survived?
Thankee much.
EDIT: er, nevermind. Found it... *muses into darkness*

Wow - I'm not there. It goes from Kama to Khavanon. What happened?
Posted by ElJay (Member # 6358) on :
It's because you had your own album, kat, not inside the hatrack one. Here it is.
