This was on another board I visit, and seemed very hatrack-esque.

1. Orthodox Judaism (100%)
2. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (98%)
3. Eastern Orthodox (97%)
4. Roman Catholic (97%)
5. Islam (92%)

Those were my top matches. LDS made it into my top 10 (#9 at 77%).

Though some of those questions were iffy. For example the thing about social programs. I am against social programs run by the government but it it good for churches to do charity.

And the whole good works thing...I believe we are saved by Christ...not by any works we do...BUT if you really are a Christian, you should desire to do good.

I bet Tom will get a kick out of this. It is basically where I scored last time I took this.

3. Mahayana Buddhism (94%)
4. Reform Judaism (91%)
5. Unitarian Universalism (89%)

Everything else at 0%.

Well, that's new ! [Razz]
I wonder what my grandparents would say if they knew I'm more of a "Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants" than an "Eastern Orthodox"... [Big Grin]

I was giving a lot of "none of the aboves" and the only ones I weighted as "high" were on baptism and good works. I am LDS but it gave me:

1.  Orthodox Judaism (100%)
2.  Eastern Orthodox (91%)
3.  Roman Catholic (91%)
4.  Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (89%)
5.  Jehovah's Witness (86%)
6.  Islam (84%)
7.  Orthodox Quaker (80%)
8.  Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (77%)
9.  Sikhism (76%)
10.  Hinduism (76%)

I was very sketchy on the "Worship:..." question, because we definitely don't worship Jesus and the Holy Ghost, but the description of "Supreme Power, God or Gods" didn't sound right. I think I chose that but I nearly went with "none of the above".

I would be really curious to know what answers are supposedly 100% LDS. Maybe if I'd weighted the anti- abortion-gay-divorce section has high priority instead of medium.

How this test could more easily reflect an LDS belief:

1. The first reply is closest, but "corporeal spirit" is not right as we believe God has a tangible body. None of the above.

2. "Incarnation" isn't really the right word, since we don't believe God was God yet when he acquired his body. None of the above.

3. The second is a fair reflection of common Mormon belief: A "day" is not literally 24 hours.

4. The afterlife... I think I went "None of the above" again. "Spiritual development continues" was good, except for "all my eventually experience...closeness to God". This would only be true if we also considered Jesus and the Spirit "God".

Hmmm. Those were the major ones that I didn't understand how the ratings could be accurate without an actual answer.

Corporeal means having a body.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

Then to say he's a corporeal spirit doesn't really make sense, any more than to say fugu is a corporeal spirit.
Edit to add emphasis

So is "Atheist" or "agnostic" a possible outcome? P.S. I see the "nontheist" above. I was just wondering if the belief-o-meter tells the difference.

Here's an odd mix when I replied based on my secular ethics as opposed to my religious dogma:

2.  Hinduism (97%)
3.  Mahayana Buddhism (94%)
4.  Bahá'í Faith (85%)
5.  Neo-Pagan (84%)
6.  Orthodox Judaism (80%)
7.  New Age (77%)
8.  Theravada Buddhism (76%)
9.  Islam (69%)
10.  Unitarian Universalism (67%)
11.  Liberal Quakers (66%)
12.  Sikhism (65%)
13.  Orthodox Quaker (57%)
14.  Reform Judaism (57%)
15.  Seventh Day Adventist (53%)
16.  Jehovah's Witness (52%)
17.  New Thought (48%)
18.  Scientology (47%)
19.  Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (47%)
20.  Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (44%)
21.  Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (44%)
22.  Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (41%)
23.  Taoism (40%)
24.  Eastern Orthodox (39%)
25.  Roman Catholic (39%)
26.  Secular Humanism (28%)
27.  Nontheist (21%)

Taoism came up disappointingly low. I guess I'll have to go read their section on it. But it's an odd mix, with Orthodox Judaism still 80%.

7. Hinduism (75%)
8. Sikhism (72%)
9. Eastern Orthodox (66%)

The outcome was almost exactly how I assumed it would be. First four especially.

I do wish there were more options to some of the questions, though. I felt 'trapped' answering a few of the questions.

16. Theravada Buddhism (35%)
17. Sikhism (31%)
18. Jainism (29%)

22. Christian Science (Church of Christ, Scientist) (23%)
23. Taoism (21%)
24. New Thought (20%)
25. Nontheist (20%)
26. Secular Humanism (20%)
27. Scientology (15%)

Especially seeing as how my ancestors were orthodox Quakers -- and I know their beliefs and disagree with them. In reality I'm what my #2 choice says.

Some of these questions were very ambigious and unanswerable. Such as the one that says "Good works is: 'necessary' or 'unnecessary'" Well, necessary for WHAT? If the question is necessary for salvation, then it's false (for me) because salvation is a gift of God by grace. But good works are necessary if we keep wanting to grow as Christians and follow Christ. We aren't saved BY our good works -- good works are a result OF our salvation. So I have no way of answering that one since they didn't really complete the thought.

And I couldn't answer #12 at all, and there was no "none of the above" on that question.

I remember having fun with this when I and some friends were on Paper Staff in High School.

1. Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (Mormons) (100%)
2. Jehovah's Witness (89%)
3. Mainline to Conservative Christian/Protestant (83%)
4. Mainline to Liberal Christian Protestants (78%)
5. Bahá'í Faith (76%)
6. Orthodox Judaism (73%)
7. Orthodox Quaker (58%)
8. Eastern Orthodox (57%)
9. Roman Catholic (57%)
10. Islam (57%)
11. Seventh Day Adventist (55%)

The top two are identical to what I had before...

I knew a protestant guy who took the quiz and came back 100 percent LDS. We had a good giggle over that one. [Big Grin]

Vera, I tried to figure out what you did not to get a 100% on Nontheist. You basicly answered most of the questions 13 to 20 with an answer other then Not Applicable. On the contrary, I answered Not Applicable to most since they should not be part of a belief system, but should be allowed to differ from person to person, as there's not enough scientific proof either way. (and I include human sciences here) If I choose what I believe right now, then I get a result very, very similar to yours.

Corwin, I think you're right. If I go back and answer "not applicable" to all the social/political issues type questions I get:

1. Unitarian Universalism (100%)
2. Nontheist (97%)
3. Secular Humanism (97%)
4. Theravada Buddhism (77%)
5. Liberal Quakers (68%)

And I probably should have answered "not applicable" to those anyway. I have strong feelings on those issues, but I don't think that I would want my "religion or faith category" to address them. I kind of think it's a separate issue. But then, I would certainly never belong to a religion that did adress those issues in a way I disagreed with, so I guess in a way it is relevant. That's why I answered them the first time. [Dont Know]

I do know that I would definitely NOT want to be UU, despite apparently agreeing 100%. Any religion that can be shared by people who disagree on such a basic question as whether there is a diety doesn't sound like a belief system at all.

Non-theist is also too vague for me. I have some pretty strong beliefs that are not adressed by that.

I guess I'm probably closest to secular humanist. I agree with them on pretty much everything, but I'm not sure I like the emphasis on man being able to improve himself. Sounds too squishy for me. I like my belief systems without such a soft, gooey center. Still, it definitely seems like the closest for me.

Vera, I'm glad I could help you solve your dilemma. [Wink] And you have a point there, I wouldn't adhere to a belief/religion that would disagree with me on those issues either. Then again, I don't see myself as being part of a non-theistic system - if there is something like that in the first place. It's just that I can safely be categorized like that. Extremist non-theist would be more precise. (see the number of belief systems in which I 'scored' a perfect 0...)

I find it strange though that there seem to be so few people among those who have posted their results here that have the same amount of non-religiosity in them as me. Then again, maybe there were others that entered the thread, saw what the test was about and didn't bother to take it ?! [Confused]

By the way, does anyone know what percentage of the population in the US (or in the world) believes in God ?

Vera, did I miss anything here ? How come you have such a low post number and so few posts ? Did you post under another nickname ? (I would say it's not your type to do it...) Or... you have a life outside Hatrack ? [Big Grin]

Corwin,
I don't really see myself as part of a non-theistic system either, or any system at all.

As to the post count issue, I have been lurking here on and off for years. Probably even longer than my registration date would indicate. To give you some idea just how long, I remember Bonduca.

I have no idea why I'm posting all of a sudden or whether it will last. I have posted a few times over the years, but never got much response and never felt compeled to follow-up. The grad school thread pulled me in this time, but then I started posting on a couple other threads, which is weird for me.

A lot of really cool people here have Quaker at the top or near the top of their list. I find that fascinating! It makes me want to know more about Quakers! [Smile]

Vera, I officialy have no idea what/who you're talking about... So that cannot really help me in determining your time of appearance here at Hatrack, can it ? (just teasing [Wink] )

Edit: Oh no, new page...

Quakers are pretty cool! The American Friend's Service committee is the First organization to ever win the nobel peace prize. They are often the first organization let in to war torn areas. They seem to have a pretty strong belief in peace and non-violence. Many of them were consciencious objectors WAY before that became cool. Many Quakers were also active abolitionists.

I think Liberal Quakers and Orthodox Quakers are pretty different. My best friend is a Liberal Quaker/Wiccan. Her family is Quaker and that's how she was raised, and although she is now Wiccan she still attends Quaker meeting and they don't have a problem with that. Liberal Quakers are kind of similar to UU in that you can kind of believe whatever you want, but their meetings are very different. I think Orthodox Quakers are more strictly Christian.

Interesting. Specifically, I did not know about the difference in Liberal and Orthodox. I guess living peacefully is a pretty strong part of their value system?

Corwin...er, no, I guess that wouldn't help much then. [Wink]

But I'm sure some of the really old oldbies remember her.

sarcasticmuppet: I never played mafia, so I'm not sure what you mean. Did Bonduca originate the mafia trend here?

Beverly, here is what Belifnet has to say about Orthodox Quakers vs Liberal Quakers

It seems that living peacefully and working for social justice causes is fundamental to both.

Thanks. It is cool that this site gives a brief description on each belief system. I would enjoy reading them all. Quakers seem pretty darn cool.
