Funk singer Rick James, best known for the 1981 hit "Super Freak," died Friday, apparently of natural causes, police said.
James, 56, died at 9:45 a.m. at a residence near Universal City, said Officer Esther Reyes, a Police Department spokeswoman.
I have to wonder what this will do to Dave Chapelle's show...

This is sad. I love his music!
But I want to be really honest here, I totally misread the thread title, and I'm not trying to be funny. Just wondering if I was the only one.

So does this now ruin Dave Chapelle's whole gag?

I don't think it really changes anything for Dave Chapelle, unless he planned on doing another Rick James show.
I wouldn't be surprised if he did some sort of tribute to him, but as it's a comedy show they could get away with just not acknowledging James' death.
Anyway, Rick James himself was on the show and, I would assume, gave his blessing for the jokes that Chapelle was making about him. But I'm only guessing.

He actually was plannig on doing a movie of his Rick James skit. I read it in TV guide this morning.
"Memoirs of a Funk Legend" or something like that.
