Boy Opera has been dressing strangely lately in his quest to resemble a Pokemon trainer. This includes pants and a long-sleeve shirt, plus a sweatshirt, in 90 degree weather. I'm cool with that. However, I just found out that Boy Opera actually cut the hood off of his sweatshirt. This means that I now have to purchase another one. Grrr!!! I didn't even know what to say to him.

Well, the sweatshirt is the kind with the zipper all the way down. It was his jacket for this fall.

A little boy I know cut his own hair a couple of days ago.
No big deal, right? All kids do it at some point.
Except that it was down to his waist, and he cut the entire ponytail off at the scalp.
He's six, had never had a haircut, and his mother had forbidden him to do it, even though comments from strangers like "What a pretty little girl you are" made him sob.
He had tried several times to cut it but his mother caught him each time.
He finally succeeded.
I feel bad, but all I can do is mentally cheer the little guy on. You go, Bear!

(although stress to him that certain things he should ask permission from you before doing, so you can explain stuff -- like the cost of jackets....)

LOL at Annie. I think I'm going to have him do some extra chores to help pay for a new sweatshirt. Silly me, I figured I could trust him with scissors since he's 9! Neither one of my kids have ever cut their own hair, but Operaetta did cut all of the hair off the end of the dog's tail once.

Good luck - I have no insights as to what could make him understand what he has done.
But patience is a virtue - and revenge is sweet. Take a picture of him and show it to his friends in ten years.

I understand that, Hobbes, and I would agree if he knew how to sew. I can definately teach him, but I don't think trying to re-sew the hood back on would be a good first project. He'd be handling a needle for the first time on pretty tough material.

edit: He did just come out and apologize again. Then he reminded me that when he's a grown-up he can cut the hoods of sweatshirts as much as he likes.

Personally I wouldn't worry about it at this point. I would explain that the coat he altered was to be his fall and winter cold weather protection and that now it won't function like it was designed to. When fall rolls around and he gets cold dig out an old coat of yours and say thats the best you can do because he altered the one you had for him. Or take him to a used clothing place and have him pick out a used coat. If he gets any allowance make him pay for the coat. These are things that illustrate the cost of his desire to alter his clothing.

Punwit, I'm pretty sure that Mr. Opera is going to say what you just said. I will buy him a new sweatshirt, and he will be required to give up his allowance and do extra chores in order to help pay for it. Now I just need to decide what kinds of extra chores. *evil grin* I could make him sort through and reorganize all of Operaetta's barbies for me.

But did he *know* it was supposed to be his coat when the weather got cold? Granted, he should have asked before he cut up his clothing. But, maybe he just didn't realize that he would need the hood later to keep his ears warm.
You could just buy him a hat, instead of a whole new sweatshirt, especially if you think he'll want to wear the altered one more anyway.

This is one reason I lock up scissors in my house.
That and the "trimmin party" the kids held last month. Who knew how well nail scissors could cut hair?

By the way, whenever I read this thread title, I think of Opera Boy from SNL. Remember him? He was in that inexplicably funny but mind-numbingly stupid phase that was the early 90s.
