So, my son bought WarCraft (Reign of Chaos and Frozen Throne) and the WarCraft Official Strategy Guide from a friend. Unfortunately, this friend lost the CD covers that had the CD-Keys in them. Anyone know what I can do? He downloaded a ton of key codes from the internet, but none of them seem to work.

I guess this will teach him to be more careful with his money, but sheesh. I feel a bit sorry for him.

I would have him demand his money back from the "friend," especially since the likelihood is that the friend kept the CD keys and burned copies of the CDs and is still playing the game.

yeah, i'd get my money back. I believe you can use another cd key [Dont Know] , but I know you wouldn't be able to play on battle.net with the other person.

Edit: had to have this guy--> [Dont Know]

Without the CD key, the CDs are useless. Hence the 'sale' is a rip-off. Get your money back.

If you aren't able to return them, you can get a CD key at http://www.serials.ws/. It's not legit, and you probably won't be able to play online, but you'll at least be able to play the game.

Yup, what they said. When you buy the game, you're buying a license to the game in the form of a CD-Key, not the CD itself. The CD is worthless, or, rather it's worth exactly the cost of the plastic it's made from.

Get your money back.

I'm pretty sure you can find used copies of WarIII at the local gaming store, or even a new copy at a reduced price.

Get your money back, then don't buy another at all. A new World of Warcraft is coming out soon, and it's apparently obscenely superior to the current release. Wait until it comes out -- then buy it, as he'll be chomping at the bit to do, or buy the ridiculously depreciated Warcraft III for pennies.

Get your money back, but if you want to play the game you already have, you can download the serials using Kazaa-like programs.

Thanks guys. I tried to tell him that he needed to get his money back, but because I'm just his mom, he didn't believe me. Your responses seemed to have done the trick. Thanks.

Um, Eddie, World of Warcraft is completely unrelated to WarCraft III other than that both take place in the same setting. World of Warcraft is an MMORPG; WarCraft III is a real-time strategy game.

(WoW is apparently great for what it is -- which is to say, it is a highly polished MMORPG. But it's still an MMORPG. There is no building of armies. I mention this because I love War3, and still play it frequently, but have zero interest in WoW or any other MMORPG.)

I think you can contact blizzard and get a new CD key, but they charge you ten bucks or something around that price. My friend told me this when I lost my diablo CD key. I didnt try it so I dont know if its true. I found my Diablo key so I didnt need to.

WC3 rules! [Party] I love that game and i play it all the time. Thats a bummer thoguh aobut the CDkey. I'm not sure if you can do anything aobut it. I would just see if you can get your money back. It's really too bad that he wont be able to paly the game though.

Thanks raventh1. Someone I know had a CD-Key they weren't using for Reign of Chaos, but I might use that for Frozen Throne.

After having talked to this kid and his mother, and seeing their house, I actually do believe that he lost the cases. We have the original game, and they don't have a CD-burner (neither do we) and they just don't seem like the type. They are complete slobs, though, so it doesn't seem like it would be hard for them to lose something. What's really amazing is that the mother runs a beauty shop out of the basement (walkout) and it is spotless. I guess the boys make quite a mess while she's working and she won't clean up after them. I don't know how they can live like that. And I'm a slob!

When did Frisco become Mean Old Frisco? I've seen your butt, buddy. You'll never be mean or old to me. [Wink] And I'm glad my "absence makes the heart grow fonder" plan is working. Actually, between the Mormon's visiting, moving and trying to fix up this disaster area we call home, I've been really busy. And I think I'm going to start a job next week, so that will totally blow any free time. I figured if I didn't take this job, I'd go crazy, well, crazier, because I hate this house.
