This was in a google ad at the bottom. Anyone heard of it before??

It's a google ad for kamacon?

Posted by Farmgirl (Member # 5567) on :

That is just bizarre. Is it trying to get us to CREATE a community, or does one really already exist? (beside here, of course!)

It said to me that there were already 25 people signed up in the Springfield area....and that was before I signed up myself.

Elizabeth, you better be in there!

Posted by Jeni (Member # 1454) on :

That 25 is the total number for all cities and countries I believe. It's now 27 signed up for every city I've tried.

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

I signed on and found that the number didn't change after I signed on...so the 25 must have already included me!

Hrm. Maybe someone should inform them about this website? Someone interested in OSC probably made that meetup site not knowing about Hatrack.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

How bizarre! I stumbled across that last month and was going to post it and ask . . .

I'm curious but dubious.

Do the Cards know anything about it????

*raising eyebrows curiously*

It's gotta be a scam or something...

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

That is why I used my hotmail account for the info... [Big Grin]

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

Meetup.com is not a scam, its a site for people with common interests to self-organize on for meetings based on geographical location.

edit: and its one of the most popular sites on the web.

Yeah, I'm sure it must have meetings for just about any sort of interests at all. Someone from hatrack should keep up with it just to see who is over there and sucker th<ahem> welcome them into hatrack. [Smile]

When do they get around to asking for money?

Posted by Jutsa Notha Name (Member # 4485) on :

I was thinking the same. Where's the part where they charge you for something?

Posted by fugu13 (Member # 2859) on :

There's a premium membership level, but the functionality of the free normal membership is great/enough for organizational purposes, and they guarantee it won't decrease (though they're of course always looking for additional perks to give premium members).

28 people for the utah one. Hmm. [Wink]

I just find it kind of creepy that the next meetup day is actually very near to the BIG meetup day in Chicago. Maybe someone should let them know...?

Orson Scott Card Fans Worldwide (and friends.) So far, 29 have signed up.
Note the "worldwide" bit.

Well, meetup already knows me because I've signed up for other groups (never actually made it one, though). So I guess now it's 30. [Big Grin] *hits renew* Yep.

And August 16 is just the next third-Monday-of-the-month. Weird coincidence, though . . . [Angst]

Now when I type www . ha... in my address bar, the OSC fan meetup site is first. [Mad]

Ok, I joined. I don't suspect much will result from it, though. I do think that we should post KamaCon photos there, though, or Endercon photos, or Shinda photos, or CFC photos, or Pac-NW photos, or W.MA photos....

Now they can start charging...lol

I wonder if these people are really fans of OSC... well, the people in the pictures look like nerds, so it must be legitimate.

Okay -- I just tried to sign up for that thing -- and they said the username Farmgirl is already taken! That is just wrong!

I can't user a different username over there than here!

I signed up. This way I can hang out with cool people who like OSC even though I am *not* coming to Kamacon.

[Cry]

All right . . . I'll check out the local Oly crew. And I won't rub anyone's noses in it that there is a whole wonderful Hatrack community out there . . . [Big Grin]

I ended up using Lupus80

Sadly no one else in gainesville has signed up

I always wonder about that. I am lizarda. Eliz and Elizabeth were taken. That is understandablebecause Elizabeth is a common name, but I doubt Farmgirl is high on the list.

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Beverly was taken too. What's up with that? Maybe they are our alter-egos from another dimension?

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Shan was already used, so I added a couple of numbers to it and got signed up.

Do you suppose they are signing up phantom people based on our Hatrack aliases and info., to make it look like there really are folks involved?

There is one username pool for ALL Meetup groups. So it doesn't mean there is (necessarily) another Farmgirl, Lupus, Elizabeth, or beverly who are OSC fans and signed up before you. There are a LOT of Meetup groups. And some have been around for years.

The OSC meet-up list . . . this seems suspicious . . . and rather familiar . . . (Jaws theme playing now)

The Ender's Game quartet summarizes my own private theology and epistemology. I can't stand Scott's political stances, but somehow I agree with the premises of his prose completely.

Papa Moose (Ventura, CA)
I'm known at least as well by the name Papa Moose as by my real name, especially among OSC fans. I also was at Endercon 2002, and these two pieces of information are somewhat related.

I want to know who menolly is -- she's in San Diego, and she's clearly a Pern fan as well. But she has her email blocked. Not that it matters much, since I've no plan to pay for a Meetup membership.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Ah, Pern . . . Menolly was my heroine as an unhappy adolescent.

Killashandra is my vision of competent, capable women . . .

Kwea - are you sure you have seniority? I just registered yesterday and my SN is at the top of the list. The others registered before that . . . so, I think that being closer to the top of the list might mean less seniority . . . [Evil]

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I'm pretty sure you will always come up the top of your own list, unless you click on another city.

Anyway, I've been a Meetup member for over a year, so I should have seniority over all of you. BWAHAHA!

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Now that's funny - I get to be senior here in Oly, huh. I wonder if I'll have a solitary dinner at the chosen place . . . which, if it is Applebee's, has really lovely salads . . . nummy.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

If fewer than four people register sign up for a meetup, it will be canceled, IIRC.

Posted by Shan (Member # 4550) on :

Hmm. I could still have my salad . . . and enjoy my book and brew, sans child!

Posted by Kwea (Member # 2199) on :

Yep, I am....I told Papa he had to join, and he did AFTER my post...lol

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Eh, our meeting is doomed to failure. I think I am the only one in this area signed up.

Rivka, you've been a member that long? Have you had any of these fabled meet-ups? Did they involve non-hatrackers?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

I've been a Meetup member since before I joined Hatrack -- but not a member of the (brand-new, I think) group for OSC fans. (Actually, it looks like Meetup has started a new category of groups, for fans of authors. I almost signed up for the Octavia Butler group.)

And I've come close to meeting with local BookCrossers (that's the Meetup group I've been a member of the longest), but it has yet to work out. And then I got less interested in BookCrossing . . . so we'll see if I ever go. But they have certainly met in my area most months.

Posted by pooka (Member # 5003) on :

I don't understand, has someone already set up profiles for some hatrackers on metup?

Lupus, I know of at least two Card fans in Gainesville, one is even on the UFG payroll. But I'm not quite sure of the best way to introduce you all. You know how people kind of are about meeting folks from the internet.

Well, if beverly is doing it... :pinches nose and takes a running leap:

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

Rivka: Oh, forgot about the cross-over of the meetup site. So did you officially sign up for the OSC meetup portion?

Pooka: Cool! Maybe this meeting has a slightly higher chance of happening. But are you going to Kamacon?

It said my name was already taken too! So I signed in as realpooka [Evil Laugh]

Kamacon would be a distant, distant possibility. I wonder if we can pull for a provo meeting at a park. maybe the whole angle on this sucker is restaurants pay to be in the meetup vote.

Yep!

Hey, look! A new member, who says s/he was at Endercon, but without an SN I recognize. Lafayette, IN, hmm?

Posted by beverly (Member # 6246) on :

quote:

Ha! Maybe. I chose Borders Books and Music because there it has a nice atmosphere to sit and talk, you *can* get refreshment, but no pressure to.

I have noticed that there aren't too many cases of more than one signed up in a city. We are a spread-out bunch. Surely there are more die-hard OSC fans amongst us than this.

Edit: So, the question remains for me, who started this OSC meetup thingy? Did the meetup site generate it, or did some lonely fan out there start the thing? If so, will s/he find his/er way to hatrack soon?

Someone needs to join a Broward, FL/surrounding area meetup! Otherwise it will just be me and two of my orson-obsessed friends drinking coffee like any ordinary monday night, lol.

Bump. I guess I better alert the expatriates at Galacticus.

P.S. When was it moved to monday, I thought it was Aug 13? I'm planning to be down there the 12th and 13th.

Pooka, the Meetup is NOT the same as KamaCon. And since Meetup cancels all meetings that don't get 5 confirmations, I'll bet none of the OSC Meetups happen -- at least not this month.
