Is this the tempur-pedic thing? I keep seeing ads for those and being tempted to try one. They look like they'd be great, don't they? Or else they're a big scam, one. I, too, would love to hear from someone who actually had slept on one, and find out what they thought.

I'm going shopping for the new bed tonight. I know they have trial periods, but I know there's a catch, too. Just don't know what it is yet.
And yes, this is the tempurpedic thing.

I'm pretty sure my new bed has "memory foam." The way the salesman described it to me is that it's not a memory of your body, but a memory of the original shape. So even if you sleep on it for a long time, it won't indent badly.
That's what he said, at least.
Anyhow, I got mine from Mattress Discounters, and I'm pretty happy with it. Everyone who comes over thinks it's a really comfortable bed, though none of them have slept on it. It also has a pillow-top, which makes it particularly squishy. Mine isn't nearly as squishy as most of the others. I don't like sinking in halfway down.
I've had it for about a month, and I'm pretty happy with it. Feels really nice to climb into.

They retain heat. So if you're in a warm climate or are hot in bed a lot (purposefully written to be taken out of context) you may want to consider something else.
I have a Select Comfort bed and love it. It's so nice being able to adjust the firmness.

And check how thick it is, for a full grown person, you'll probably want at least three to four inchs, while two inchs is doable, four is where it's at. Satyagraha

*chortle* my mattress is at least a foot thick. I got a half-sized box spring so I wouldn't be really high up, so it's only like 5 inches deep.

JenniK had major back and neck problems due to a car accident, and I got her one of the pillows, the one that is orthopedicly shaped, not one of the flat ones. They sell them at COSTCO for about $25 as opposed to other stores (JC Penney and Brookstone) that charge much more.
She loves it, and we bring it whenever we overnight somewhere.
If you get a normal mattress you can but the memory foam mattress cover for it, which is about 3 inches thick. I can't afford to buy the mattress, but I think I'll be getting the mattress cover pretty soon.
They memory foam was actually developed for the space program in the 60's, and they used it to protect the astronauts from the g-force of takeoffs and the impact of landings. That is what stuffed the seats they were strapped into.

Mine is fantastic. It's medium firm or something. It seems to just support all the right places. So comfy...mmm...

My wife and I got a Tempur-pedic (not one of the knock-offs) last fall and I've got to say it is, without a doubt, the best bed we've ever slept on.
My wife's back pain has diminished 80% over the past year (our prior bed was a Sealy posture-pedic) and we haven't found the bed to sleep hot at all. As a matter of fact, it tends to remain at room temperature.
The pillows remain cool all night as well, and the "squishy" version of the Tempur-pedic pillows are great.
In addition, the mattress is hypo-allergenic and dust mites can't live in it, which is of real long-term benefit if you suffer from dust allergies.
If you read in bed while propped up on an elbow, your arm won't fall asleep.
Another advantage to getting a Tempur-pedic over one of the knock-offs is that it comes with a 20-year guarantee and the first 10 years are NOT pro-rated. In that first 10 years, if you have a problem, they will replace it, no questions asked.
Basically, the Tempur-pedics cost a bit more, but they are worth every penny of it. The imitation ones, well, let the buyer beware.

I couldn't affor the Tempur-pedic, so I went with a Seely with the individual springs. It's far more comfortable than what I've got now.
I may look into the foam cover, or just upgrade when we can afford it (or this one wears out).
The cheaper foam ones didn't feel the same at all.

Yes I love my costco memory-foam pillows and have been tempted to buy their 3" matress topper (over your existing mattress) for quite a while.

I would suggest getting one of the pillows just to see if you like it. They are inexpensive, if you consider that you never have to replace them and they never go flat.
That way you find out if you like the feel of the memory foam before you look at the mattress pads, which run about $100, even at Costco.
Jenni loves hers so much that I tried it, adn I plan on buying one for myself.
