I'm going to Mexico on July 26. My friend Vanessa an I wanted to go on an adventure, and I planned to do research while I was there for an independent study I'm doing next fall on tree symbolism in Mexican folk art. It's all very exciting - we're planning to go to Oaxaca and Chiapas.

Only Vanessa just called me and said she's not getting the $4,000 in financial aid she was counting on and will have to use her savings to live next semester - she can't come. She's willing to pay me back for her (non-refundable) ticket if it's not transferable, but that still leaves me with a $350 (non-refundable) ticket and no one to travel with. My grandmother was already frightened enough that two young girls were going alone.. I don't think anyone would let me go by myself.

My question (my imploring, rather) is this: is anyone interested in a once-in-a-lifetime fun trip adventure opportunity? I'm doing the whole trip for $1,000, taking buses everywhere and staying in hostels - which is very economical for a three-week trip. My flight dates are July 26 and August 19, and I'm leaving from Salt Lake, but could meet someone in Mexico City.

This is your opportunity to have all kinds of spontaneous fun and heck, out of sheer gratitude I'll even buy you a helado!

[Frown] I so would if I could - that sounds simply heavenly. When are you going? I probably can't, but it'd be fun to dream.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

July 26 - August 19. Just the right time for a summer fling. Your boss would totally understand [Smile]

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

Annie, I wish I could, but I don't think I can. I couldn't go for more than a week. [Frown]

Granted, you have no idea who I am, but I'd love to go - except for the whole "being terminally broke" thing.

Sigh. Isn't that always the case?

Posted by Jeni (Member # 1454) on :

Well... I would have definitely been interested if I didn't already have plans for those weeks. Good luck finding someone. It sounds like a ton of fun.

Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :

The problem is that it conflicts with KamaCon. [Frown]

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

You could always come to KamaCon, Annie. [Smile]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

...with the money I already spent on a ticket? [Frown]

[Frown] [Group Hug] [Kiss]

Annie, can you sell your ticket on E-bay? Maybe recover some? I don't know how that works.

Then you can use the money you would have used on hostels for a ticket to KamaCon, and you can bunk with Farmgirl and Ivygirl or someone. There'll be a place. [Smile]

hmmm... that's a fairly extended stay.

I MUCH I wish I could go to Mexico! I've never been anywhere.
But I have no money....
None...
My money is being rented from various places....

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

The blasted tickets are non-transferable. So no one else can use them. Handy, neh?

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

I think I may well go by myself. I'm getting the same kind of well-then-forget-you attitude I got when I went to the prom by myself. Only this is a little further away than the prom. Mwa ha ha ha!

"ohhhh... mexico
It sounds so sweet with the sun sinking low"

- U2 (bootleg cover of JT)

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

I think someone should market an album of songs U2 has covered. That would be beautiful on its own.

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

*places side-bet that Annie doesn't visit Mexico prior to release of U2's cover album*

takers?

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

Whatever she does, she better have a good time. Or else. Umm...or else something, I don't know what exactly but it would break my heart if she doesn't. [Frown]

Hobbes [Smile]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Oh, I'll have a great time. Maybe I'll fall into a Mexican river.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

You never did tell me how you faired... any significant cuts or bruises? Ohh, and now I feel a little better about being so annoying whenver you went close to the edge of the cliff at spring break, so at least something good came of it. [Wink] [Kiss]

Hobbes [Smile]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

I have an interesting crescent-moon shaped bruise beneath my kneecap and it's kind of hard to walk.

And apparently, your paranoia did no good at all. [Razz]

Posted by Snarky (Member # 4406) on :

Ooh. A Mexican river. How exotic and foreign.

I think they put chiles in their rivers. They put chiles in everything else.

*aside* Doh! I've derailed my own thread!

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

By the way, Hobbesy, you should post those pictures of me defying death on spring break.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

No, see, when I was there my constant, annoying, unattractive nagging kept you from hurting yourself; but when left to your own devices, well, we can see the results in the shape of a fascinating crescent moon.

Hobbes [Smile]

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

Hmm... well I would except I'm not really sure where they are, and even when I find them I'll still have to scan them in... but tell you what, you send me those pictures of you in the parade, and I'll get cracking on the spring break pictures. [Kiss]

Hobbes [Smile]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

I had to destroy those pictures. In everyone's best interest.

Anyway - anyone want to go to Mexico?

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

[Wall Bash]

You were in a parade?

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Yes. I was Sacajawea in the freakin' Western Heritage parade.

Anyone want to go to Mexico?

Posted by Rappin' Ronnie Reagan (Member # 5626) on :

I want to go. The problem is funding.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Anyone want to pay for Sarah to go to Mexico?

Posted by Rappin' Ronnie Reagan (Member # 5626) on :

*giggle*

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

*pokes giggling Roni*

I'll give you 2-to-1.

*smirks*

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

By the way, I'm really frustrated. I've paid almost $400 for a ticket, and I don't even know if I can use it.

*blows a little steam*

That is all.

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

I wish I could go with you. [Frown] I hope you work something out darling. [Kiss]

Posted by TMedina (Member # 6649) on :

Sorry Annie - I did the wild and whacky thing when I went to Europe for a month after graduation.

If I had the cash and the spare time, I'd cheerfully go - although since I've tacked on a car payment and insurance to my list of expenses, my options are severely limited. [Wall Bash]

:thwaps flaky friend on the noggin:
Can you perhaps shorten your stay, if kat would seriously be able to go?

I think you need to just pray about whether you should go alone. If you aren't overwhelmed with foreboding, then thank granny for her concern, or find out if she is concerned enough to bail you out of your ticket.

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

My dates are pretty much etched in stone - my plane ticket is entirely inflexible. (That's what you get when they're cheap!)

The good news is, my brother may be able to get some leave time and come with me. Let's all communally cross our fingers.

Posted by Risuena (Member # 2924) on :

I thought that even when you got the cheap tickets, you could still change flights and times but appropriate (and possibly excessive) charges would apply. [Dont Know] If your brother can't join you it might be worth checking out.

And normally, I would love to go to Mexico, particularly for cheap, but unfortunately there's lots of me moving from one state to another to another during that time period...

Posted by Anna (Member # 2582) on :

I'm crossing my fingers [Smile]

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

That would be such a great solution babe, I'll cross my fingers for you! [Kiss]

Hobbes [Smile]

Posted by ak (Member # 90) on :

Yeah, let's hope the brother can manage it! I would so go except for the requirement that I look for and find a job in the next week or so before I totally run out of money for bills. [Smile]

Posted by Richard Berg (Member # 133) on :

I would go if you were single [Razz]

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Oh, so that's how it is, eh? [Wink]

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

do you fiddle?

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

I play the world's smallest violin rather well...

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

if you can post it, you can toast it, baby!

umm... can you actually play that thing?

fallow

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Just listen... can't you hear it?

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

You'll let us know when you find out if your brother can come right? Or you'll at least let me know? I'll give you a kiss... [Kiss]

*crosses fingers* Here's hopin' it works out. [Smile]

Hobbes [Smile]

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

I think I hear it. how does it go?

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

It's playing the world's saddest song which is, I can only assume, by Hank Williams.

And of course I'll keep you updated, Hobbesy. I don't know when he'll know if he gets leave or not. So far he's been there two years without them approving any of his requests.

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

annie,

join you in a duet?

fallow

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Join right in! My whiny fiddle's always going.

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

what shall I play or sing?

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

La guitarra. And get your mariachi friends to join in.

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

*squints*

you would make a joke on me, senora?

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

No! But I may fall asleep on you...

muchas buenas [Smile]

Posted by fallow (Member # 6268) on :

I shall sing you to sleep, then?

*strums*

Posted by Hobbes (Member # 433) on :

*cough* No singing Annie to sleep. [Razz]
