Diane and I are thinking that we'll be doing grilling and maybe a movie. Then we'll go to see Hootie and the Blowfish.

We're not big fans, but the cost is five bucks, it's about a quarter mile from our apartment, and is followed by fireworks at this same park so nicely close.

Music, explosives, no dealing with traffic.



A happy fourth indeed.

This is a good music week for us - we took time off from work yesterday to go to "Taste of Chicago." The big bonus was that Melissa Etheridge peformed at 5:30. Diane's uses a wheelchair and the section reserved for chair users and their friends was great! We were in the shade and about 50 feet from Etheridge when she was on our side of the stage (a lot of the time). She played and sang for over 2 hours without a break!

Good times in Chicagoland.

This weekend also happens to be my older son's 5th birthday, so we're celebrating that. Saturday July 3rd we're having a Batman-themed party (don't ask me why. Who know what goes through that kid's head?). That night we're going to a minor league baseball game. After the game they're having a fireworks show, which we're staying for. Sunday, the 4th, my wife says she wants to go see more fireworks, so we'll probably go down to one of the largest parks in Vegas and watch the pretty lights. One thing I really hope is that I remember to put up our flag. I often have trouble remembering that.

My daughter was asking if they would do anything different in church. I didn't tell her any of the highly amusing possibilities that questions sowed in my imagination.

Fireworks! We're going to a pitch-in at a friends' house, then heading over to the local park. They're having a little festival complete with a magic show and bouncy things for the kiddos to jump in. Then we're going to sit back and watch the show.

A friend and I are in LA for the weekend, and I think we're going to Huntington Beach for the 4th. I think there's supposed to be some centennial celebration or something going on there. Sounds like fun, anyway.

Saudade and Andrei and Aragorn are here! We are planning to goof off and hang out and ..... watch Aragorn harrass his aunts Mouse and Felicity and ... eat non-barbecue food (either macaroni casserole or chicken curry over rice - why didn't I remember that people eat Barbecue on the 4th?) and ..... watch the fireworks! No, actually we don't have any plans beyond that right now. We will make it up as we go.

Saudade brought me artwork, oh my goodness, you guys should see it! She is amazing! She gets better and better all the time, when each time I think it isn't possible for anyone to get any better than she already is! Wonderful stunning beautiful stuff. I am so thrilled! My cottage is quit modest but the artwork on the walls will rival Bill and Melissa's.

It doesn't get dark enough here for fireworks yet, but there will be a parade and a carnival, so I'll go check that out. The local Harley riders club is bringing out their machines to highlight the dealer's wares and giveaways, so I'll most certainly have to go and take a look.

Today I am going to the Bloomington "Picnic with the pops" with my family and friends. Tommorow is the Parade and Fireworks, I have been to those every year of my life, so this year wouldn't be one to skip.

My scout Troop is leading the city parade with a huge flag (I'm not sure of the dimensions), and as their SPL (Senior Patrol Leader) I get to march right up front. Oh goody, I'll be the first boy scout in sight, in full dress uniform, in the most homosexual friendly city in the US. I disagree with nationals stand on the issue, but I'm still going to bite a bullet or two from idiots in the crowed, who are angry at the official BSA stand on homosexuality, as I march my boys in the streets.

Although if I miss these fireworks, there will be even cooler ones later this month. (Does anybody here go to the Festival of Hot Air Balloons in NJ?)

I met Garick and his ladyfriend, Sandy (right? =\ ). I must admit, they were a cute bunch, but Garick was cuter, by far. *grin* Now I'm going to go play guitar on my front porch, and attempt to listen to it over all the fireworks and mexican music. Hooray for cultural diversity...

I'm about to set off a large amount of fireworks only available from sovereign nations within our state's borders

But other than that, I'm largely grumpy, and am finding very little patriotic sentiment within me. Maybe I'm just in a bad mood, but I have no desire to wear flags and get misty-eyed at "America the Beautiful."

And why are they playing the 1812 Overture at the DC concert they're showing on PBS? Maybe we figure Russian war anthems are patriotic enough to count. Heck, maybe we just figure the anti-Napoleon message is close enough to current national sentiment to carry over.

*grumble grumble, curmudgeony grumble*

just ignore me.

Well, after some scares with the weather, things turned out quite nicely. Went out sans car a quarter mile to the park where Hootie and the Blowfish were going to play, following some local talent.

Weather was a little cool and breezy. Pretty nice.

The band was OK - but I think I'm getting spoiled after the Blues Fest and Melissa Etheridge. Fireworks were fantastic and set to music - very well done.

Short leisurely trip home and we're back - no hassling traffic or other joy-stealing drudgery.

On a more serious note, I noticed that there is one and only one "patriotic" song I connect with. The Star-Spangled Banner makes me tense up.

The exception - the one that actually gets me singing - is Woody Guthrie's "This Land is Your Land." But then, Guthrie's song was a reminder to workers that the country they lived in was every bit as much theirs as the Halliburtons of their day. Patriotic and subversive - it's why I connect with it.

Usually - and tonight was no exception - the first verse or two is the only one that you hear. The last verse says it all:

I went to Summerfest and hung out with the GameRiot people. They're staying at my hotel, and I've become friends with a lot of them. They let me in for free and I mopped up on America's Army: Special Forces for most of the night. I also got far into the Soul Calibur II tournament having never played the newer version before.

I didn't see this thread until after my 4th plans were over with. Well, I went up to a secluded part of the Sacramento River in northern California, and Wakeboarded all day. And jet skiied. And Waterskiied. And....

Yeah. I had a good day the last two days.

I'm as red as a tomato, but yeah, it was worth it.
