OK, I know I'm not the only Adrian Monk fan here.

The new season of "Monk" begins tonight on the USA network, airing at 10 pm ET (I think it probably repeats later tonight as well).

For those who follow the show, you might remember we're in for a change of venue. Following a lead about his wife's killer, Monk arrives tonight in New York City. Not sure if they plan on the whole season being in NYC, of if they'll end up back in San Francisco.

Apparently, USA is playing a "Monk Marathon" right now... (and I'm at work with no access to cable - and I didn't know this morning when I could have set up the VCR)

Focus on the positive - Monk tonight! [Smile]

Thanks for the info! I just checked, and USA *is* running a Monk marathon right now.

Such a fun show...

I'm a fan.

I don't watch TV very much, yet he amused me. Not enough to make me watch him all the time though. [Smile]

Thank you, Drakester!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I am going out tonight though, dagnabbit, and our taper is broken. I missed so many shows last year.

Still, my all time favorite show was when Willie Nelso was on, and they played "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" over his wife's grave. I watch that show and laugh and laugh, but i always cry at one point.

First,

I goofed on the time - it's playing at TEN tonight Eastern Time. I just corrected that in my initial post.

Elizabeth, don't despair - the episode is replaying at least twice tomorrow and again on Wednesday night. I'll look up the times later and post them - and try to get them right the first time. [Smile]

Rebroadcasts of tonight's Monk opener:

(My schedule in AOL is given in central time, so I assume, so I have adjusted the times below to ET viewers. Best to double-check in case I messed up - not like I've ever done that before. [Wink] )

Saturday, June 19

4:00 am
11:00 am
Midnight - technically June 20 if you're setting up a recorder.

Wednesday, June 23

10:00 pm

Like I said, I am assuming AOL is giving me the CT air times - check your local schedules.

I love this show!! I had seen that it was starting up again tonight and when I get home I need to set my dvr to record it. If I'd thought ahead, I'd have done it this morning (and set it to record some of the episodes I missed). Hopefully I can at least record the finale from last season, since I missed it too.

I just love USA's Friday 10pm shows. I love Monk. I loved Touching Evil. May they never make the two shows I like watching go away.

My wife and I had the day off Friday to get over our jet lag. We spent it with Sasha watching Monk.

Unfortunately, we all succumbed to Jet Lag before the new season opener. We will catch it later today.

Want to hear something crazy?

Picture the police captain on the show.

Now picture him without the mustache, but with long hair, a leaner body, leaning over a well and telling the girl at the bottom, "It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again."

Freaky, huh? It's him, allright.

Book,

What movie are you talking about? This scene doesn't sound familiar at all.

The movie is Silence of the Lambs, and I already knew that. It's very funny. Now picture him in a confederate uniform with a small phonograph for an ear.

Did anyone else find the scene with the jackhammer to be sad?

Elizabeth, I will answer to just about any variation of my first or last names.

But as I said in another thread, the name "Steverino" belongs to the great late Steve Allen.

[Hail]

ArCHeR, would that movie be "Wild Wild West?" - haven't actually seen it.

I didn't find that jackhammer scene sad - just way too drawn out, playing a joke way too long.

We'd best not get too detailed - some people checking this haven't seen the episode yet and I should put a spoiler warning in the thread title.

So, I'm a little late to pitch in my love for this show. But, um, I love this show. I've only seen four episodes, but I think it's awesome that they can make such an in-depth show without adding needless sex and (much) violence to each episode. It's very unlike most other critically-acclaimed shows today.

Also, there's going to be a Monk marathon on Sunday.

Monk is a phenomenal show. If I had cable, I'd watch it religiously. As it is, I'll just content myself with renting the episodes. Anyone have any idea when they plan to release season 2 on DVD?

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I must confess that, while I enjoyed earlier seasons of Monk, this one has been rather heavy on the farce and guest stars. Why -- WHY -- do producers think that shows can be improved by adding broad farce and guest stars?

Posted by MEC (Member # 2968) on :

I think they should have a MONK - The Dead Zone crossover, and not just a commercial.

Posted by sndrake (Member # 4941) on :

*bump*

Diane and I just got to watch a replay of Friday's MONK episode last night. Did anyone else see it?

It may be our favorite so far - the flashbacks of Monk with his wife were wonderful! You could see all the same issues he was struggling with - he still had OCD, but this was a guy who could laugh, joke, and be comfortable. The difference of someone who's really "making it" with a disability and someone who's barely hanging on.

It was also great to see the interaction between him and his in-laws - the affection and acceptance. For the most part, Monk's issues are "tolerated," rather than accepted. (I understand the world really isn't that accepting, but it was a nice picture of how family should be.)

So, Tom, I'd agree with your comments in regard to several episodes this season - but not in regard to this last one. There isn't one I've enjoyed more.

Posted by Da_Goat (Member # 5529) on :

I saw it. I thought the emotional development was astounding, but the big "mystery" (which, in my opinion, is just as large a part of the show as each of the characters and their sub-plots) wasn't as clever as most of them have been. Still, a mighty good episode.

Posted by sndrake (Member # 4941) on :

Yeah, Goat, I agree about the mystery part. If they'd devoted half the care to that part of the script as the personal part, it would have been hands-down Emmy material.

I was personally so caught up in the parts of the plot dealing with his inlaws and the flashbacks I have to admit I didn't even pay that much attention to the mystery - I'm a little weird that way (OK, and some other ways, too.). [Wink]

Posted by Christy (Member # 4397) on :

No, we missed it. Wonder if it got Tivoed? I'll have to check. We've got several hours worth of Daily Show that we have to watch, too. *grin* We've been a bit short on tv time.

I've actually had to turn off several this season, though. They were just too obvious, and not just the mystery, the humour as well. Others have been good. Weird.

(Monk-related note: it got Tivoed, and we watched it tonight. Best ep of the season so far, IMO.)

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Dagnabbit,

I only saw maybe three shows of this season. It is too hard to be home Friday nights. My daughter had really gotten into it, too. When we went to visit my aunt, who is probably OCD, she asked, "Is Aunt Bev like Monk?"

I have mentioned before that one of the most poignant tv moments I have ever experienced was when Willie Nelson and monk played "Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain" over Trudy's grave. I couldn't stop crying. But it was a happy cry, or maybe just a cathartic one. I always empathize with widowers because I grew up with my dad, and witnessed his silent pain.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

You know what's odd? The Willie Nelson episode made me twitch with uncontrollable loathing. *shudder* Even the memory of it elicits the same reaction.

I mean: Adrian Monk as a WILLIE NELSON fan? Is there anything less conceivable? Of course, we've also seen him idolize marathon runners this season, too, which suggests that the writers have decided that the best way to show off some quirky side of his character is to have him flatter the last guest star we'd have expected.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Tom,
It was really Trudy who was the fan, more than Monk.
What can I say? I am a sucker for my musical heroes!

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

I would have bought the whole "Trudy loves Willie Nelson" bit, too, if they hadn't shown us Trudy's room -- and her punk rock posters -- in the last episode. [Smile]

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

She just had eclectic taste, Tom. Perhaps she had to hide her love o' Wille from her punk rocker friends. Peer pressure doesn't end with the teen years, after all.

I do not, for instance, publicize my love of John Denver, and the spine-tingling rush I feel when I hear "Annie's Song." Some things must remain in the heart. ha ha.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Perhaps -- and this is just speculation so far -- it was her secret love of Willie Nelson that got her killed.

Then he goes through his hierarchy of phobias. I thought I would wet my pants.

Noemon, I had the same thought about the moon rock!

Exact quote:

Monk: I have a few phobias

germs
needles
milk
death
snakes
mushrooms
heights
crowds
elevators

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Sorry, one more.

On second thought, the miracle of life is sort of contained within the list:

germs(obviously, lots of germ capability in childbirth)
needles(those dang blood tests)
milk(breasts tend to drip with it)
death(orgasm referred to as "little death" by Shakespeare)
snakes(I hope this one is obvious)
mushrooms(you know, sort of like the end of the snake)
heights(of ecstasy)
crowds(that chaotic race of sperm to fertilize the egg)
elevators(going up? then coming back down)

He had to use the scooper so Monk could find it, Da_Goat.

I realize, now that it is absent, that I do not miss Sharona's accent.

Posted by Megan (Member # 5290) on :

Elizabeth, I'm completely with you there. I liked the character well enough, but I'm not sorry to see the accent go at all. And I like Natalie. However, if they set it up for a romance between them, I'm gonna get upset. For me, at least, Trudy is a big part of the show despite the fact that she's not actually a character.

Posted by sndrake (Member # 4941) on :

I like the new character.

But I'm a little concerned about the "mystery" part of the show. Tom Davidson commented on this awhile ago. I had the "mystery" pretty much figured out a little over halfway through the show.

They've got to do better. Monk can't just be cute and odd. This has to be a show that when he smiles and says "I know what happened," we don't know what he's going to say.

Posted by Belle (Member # 2314) on :

yeah, I had that one figured out pretty quickly too. And I agree, I like for the mysteries to be something that really surprises me at the end.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

I agree that a romance between the two would be wrong, but I love to see him go on dates.

As for the mystery, I miss a ton of shows, and tend to ignore that part of the series. It is more a stand-alone for me. I realized when the 24 hour marathon was on that I had missed most of last year's episodes.

For some reason, I really like the hokey aspect of the show.

"It is more a stand-alone for me."

See, hokey doesn't appeal to me. Wacky people living their wacky lives and being smart-asses to each other? I can get that at home.

Wacky people solving mysteries in a brilliant way before I do, even though all the necessary information's been shown to the viewer? That's impressive.

I would like Monk to start impressing me again, and concentrate less on the guest stars and the cute spit-takes.

I mean, you know it's gotten lazy when Christy and I looked at each other and said, almost simultaneously, that we found it almost impossible for Monk not to have considered the rocks in the fish tank when performing his analysis. Even if he hadn't figured out the whole moon rock angle, he'd've sifted through the rest of the rocks looking for diamonds or something.

I really was sort of bothered by the miracle of life being pegged as a top-of-the-list phobia. If they are trying to get nerds to watch this show, then they better realize that we will remember, if not the exact order, the fact that this alleged phobia was not mentioned previously.

Posted by TomDavidson (Member # 124) on :

Which means that we need a whole society of Monk apologists out there, like they have for Sherlock Holmes and Star Trek.

So if the miracle of birth wasn't at the top of his list, what happened to put it there -- or was he lying about the order, and if so, why?

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

Well, if you read my post above, you could argue that the miracle of birth phobia was contained within the top phobias.

Or, did the loss of Sharona, whose presence symbolized for him a womblike comfort, feel like a birth to Monk? The cold slap of reality, you know?

Posted by sndrake (Member # 4941) on :

Look, like most other hard-core Monk fans, I enjoy the quirky plot details about him.

And so I was able to enjoy the episode.

But I suspect a lot of viewers who were not so hard core figured things out about 30-35 minutes into the episode.

Unless they get back to writing real mysteries that aren't solved until the very end, I'm afraid that the ratings will drop. Even though it won't lose me as a viewer.

Posted by Elizabeth (Member # 5218) on :

It wasn't even the mystery part that bothered me. It just fell flat for me, and I am not really sure I can put my finger on why. It might be that I miss Sharona more than I thought.

I really do miss Sharona. [Frown] She had an unconditional love thing going on for Monk that just made their partnership so cool. She rolled her eyes, but she was totally accepting and tried so hard to take care of him in weird situations. Hopefully this new chic will get into that, but it's going to take a while.

::*bump* with change of thread title::

It's that time already!

From the USA Network's "Monk" Page:

quote:
SEASON 4 IS COMING! When a fellow detective shows up at a crime scene knowing all the answers, has Monk finally met his match... or is the other detective cheating? Don't miss guest star Jason Alexander in the Monk season premiere, "Mr. Monk and the Other Detective," premiering Friday, July 8th at 10/9C.
Friday nights are back. [Smile]

Yea I really liked Sharona too. But alas I no longer have a TV w/cable so I can't watch it. But my parents tape it so when I get home for breaks I have a monk marathon that lasts for about 7 hours. It's great. =D

One of my faves was when he took in the little kid for a few days.

Hooray for the new season of Monk...I hope I can stand Jason Alexander. Ah, well, at least it's only for one episode.

Right? ...Right?!

Hooray!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks, Sndrake!

Did anyone watch last night's episode?

It seemed such a stretch to me.

And so sad.

"If this is true, then nothing is true."

It killed me, absolutely kill me. The whole episode killed me.

Fantastic.

Yeah, the premise was stretchy, but Shalhoub was amazing as always.

OK, but what did you think about the perfume(Shalimar), and a bunch of other things about her that he noticed. Was that on purpose? Because I didn't buy it if it was.

I also think it was dumb to have the woman "play" Janice as well as Trudy.

However, it was just heartbreaking.

Paraphrase City:

"What happened at the cemetary? How did you know she was dead?"

"Because it still hurt."

Oh, man.

Oh, the Shalimar thing, the being allergic to fish, way over the top. It had to have been on purpose, but I don't get that they would target him like that...silly writers this ep. Usually they are much better plottish-wise.

But joining you in Paraphrase City is Natalie's reply:

"I get that"

*sob*

No. No, lately, they aren't. It's why I'm not watching anymore. [Frown]

Wait, I posted here, darn it.

Anyway, I agree, Tom, and it makes it easier because I always forget it is on on Fridays anyway. Last night was the first I'd watched in a long time.

Diane was checking the TV channel guide and saw there's a new episode of MONK on tonight. The episode has something to do with him doing a gig as a store Santa, I think.

The plots last season weren disappointing, but I'll tune in tonight to see if the writers have gotten their act together.

[Big Grin] And we finally got our TV back, just in time. [Big Grin]

Are you sure it is the start of the new season? I think it might just be a Christmas special. I remember seeing an ad for it.

Having seen the first 20 minutes: gee, that was predictable.

But some cute moments.

It does appear they're just doing special episodes for the holidays of a few shows.

Oh, and I totally knew who did it far too early in the episode. *sigh*

Didn't see it, but just the thought of Monk as a Department Store Santa ... how does he continually get himself into the worst possible scenarios for him? I mean, walking in a sewer? Having dozens of little kids sitting on his lap?

Oh, yeah. The writers. They have to keep showing off his quirks. Right.

And Natalie helps.
