Heard a news report on TV the other day that said Americans downloaded 80 MILLION dollars worth of cell phone ring tones last year!

My jaw dropped.

That is exactly what I want -- find something I can offer to consumers that costs maybe 25 cents to produce, can sell for 99 cents, and I can sell it to 80 million people! $$$$$

Any ideas?

I refuse to buy a ring for my cell phone.

My phone will use plain old .wav files. I have the five notes from Close Encounters, but I certainly didn't pay anything for it.

I refuse to buy a ring, too, but that's mainly because one of the standard rings on my phone sounds EXACTLY like one of those old standard black phones you used to rent from the phone company. It's a sound you rarely hear anymore except in old movies. And it gets me the oddest looks when my cell phone goes off. [Big Grin]

I find all of the personalized rings to be annoying but understand the reasoning.

20+ years ago, I worked in a large office with about 30 desks. Each of us had a phone and each phone had a different type, volume, pattern, or something special to designate the ring. It drove me crazy for the first few weeks.

After a while, I was able to tune out all of the ringing and only reacted when I heard my own ring pattern.

To this day, I often literally do not hear the phone ring and only notice that something is happening when I hear the answering machine start clicking.

I've never bought a ring tone, but I change mine quite a bit b/c my phone has lots of them. However, I keep forgetting I changed my ring tone, so whenever it rings it startles me. Hmm...why did I feel compelled to share that?

1 - Buy all the candy corn in the country (should cost around 0.25)

2 - Claim that you modified the flavor to make it somewhat bearable

3 - Sell for 0.99 a packet

I have that ring as well. It scares me everytime it rings.

I hate cell phones!

I play along because I have three children, parents and a husband that I'm scared to lose contact with.

Oh yes...and emergencies. My tire decided to deflate on the highway the one time I didn't have my phone with me. It's like it KNEW.

When I'm out in public, and have my phone on me, I always keep it on vibrate. Few things annoy me more than hearing someone's phone start singing in a public place.

In my room, however, when you call, it plays the dungeon theme from the original Legend of Zelda. And for free, I might add. [Wink]

My roommate and I have more than once considered going into the ringtone business. We could certainly crank out 10 a day, apiece.

No, you don't get it. Candy corn would still cost $0.25 per packet. Ringtone downloads have utterly miniscule variable costs.

I will download ringtones until I get a data cable and just upload the wav files straight from my PC.

Best Ringtone story:

I had just gotten a new cell phone, and I set up each of my calling groups with different tones so I know who it is before I even hit answer.

Later that evening, my wife and I are leaving the restaurant we had just supped at, and I hear this cat mewing over and over. My wife and I both look at each other and wonder where the heck the cat is. So we start looking up in the trees, under a car, and then my wife says, "That cat almost sounds like that one ringtone of yours"...

Yeah, we felt dumb.

We had that happen too. And then the spare was flat as well, so we had to hike to a phone.

Free Advice : Letting AAA know that your 7 months pregnant wife is there with you gets you put to the head of the line.
