And so, here I am. Telling you what pieces of music I happen to like.

This one is part of the soundtrack of the movie Requiem for a Dream.

Title: The Beginning of the End
Artist: Clint Mansell/Kronos Quartet

As before, it's a "classical" piece. But only in the sense that it uses primarily classical instruments. In form, it's refreshingly radical. Very sharp and painful.

Remember our ealier discussion of Alone Again (Naturally)? That song was about sorrow and a desire for suicide.

This piece pushes you into that same emotion--but from the inside out!

Listen to it carefully. It is pure genius. The way certain strands of music are suddenly cut off really depicits the "End" feeling.

The strings in it are used to great effect, eerily screaming the pain and sorrow in the song.

It, however, has no clear cut finish, which is a minor detraction. It's not a work that concludes--rather it evokes a powerful emotion and lets it hang, a disorienting experience. Save for that, this is a wonderful piece.
