I'm working on a column about summertime activities for your kids -- with the emphasis on far away or bizarre places to provide you with much-needed rest -- and I'm looking for some real ones to mix in with my joke suggestions. Things like Ted Nugent's hunting camp, or Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp. Something odd or weird or cool or entertainingly horrible. Is there a place where kids can learn to render fat or hunt sharks? I'd like to avoid weight-loss camps or the like, too easy.

here's a site that lists kids' summer camps

and Anitgravity sports has a summer camp:

Your children will enjoy a variety of fun activities - trampoline, tumbling, games, dance, arts and crafts. Various "theme days" make for fun times - "Circus" - "Olympic" - "500 Skills" - "Stuntman" - "Bungee" - "Karate" Snacks included.

Ha ha. This camp is literall an "O.D.D." camp:

"A separate program focuses on the special needs of ADD, ADHD, ODD , CD, OCD and LD campers."

Dunno. Access to golf clubs would open up some interesting possibilities.

Mack,
Golf is a great sport. I am going to have to come over there if you are disrespectful in its general direction ever again.

But I agree that there should be a camp for parents to figure out what all the abbreviations mean. I wonder if the camp would have separate cabins for O.D.D. and A.D.D. Which group would win the camp cup?

Neither. the ODD kids would beat the crap out of them. [Wink]

And Liz, my whole family, both sides, plays golf. As do I. [Wink]

This camp is on one of the ads at the bottom of the thread...

I changed the title of the thread to emphasize that I don't necessarily want camp listings. I'm looking for bizarre ways to legally dispose of your children for awhile during the summer.

If only the Peace Corp had a youth division...

Chris, do high school graduates count as "kids"?

If so, how about this?

Since I'm almost certainly going to be mocking whatever programs I use, probably not. But thanks [Smile]

How about the old-fashioned sort of summer activities . . . you know, a list of chores a mile long and complete freedon while mom/dad work with the exception of the obligatory lunchtime phone call. A perfect stay-at-home affordable vacation that allows the kidlets to use their imagination and learn how to either a) stay out of trouble or b) not get caught. [Big Grin]

Chris:

you might remember this story from last year: Police shut down girl's lemonade stand

That's a traditional kid thing to do in the summer that nearly turned out badly.

There's always Kama Con.

I don't know if I'll be going, after our Mem Day roadtrip. The 1 year old cried much of the drive.

Too late, column's in. Thanks everyone! As it turned out our paper did a big spread on camps for the same day, so I didn't spend too much time on them in the column. Ah well.
