I cannot be the only person on this site who listens to metal. My curious nature gets the best of me everytime and i wish to know at THIS time who else does, and if so, what they listen to.
A handful of metal cd's that have been going through my cd player:

Mudvayne has an amazing stage show. Mushroomhead are good in concert as well, as I recall.
I like Slipknot's singles, but I haven't been able to get into them so much.

I never thought i'd say this but yesterday i bought a...
...SLIPKNOT cd. it was VOL 3: THE SUBLIMINAL VERSES. I know, i should be shunned NOW by all elitists (a few of my hardcore friends have asked for my head on a platter ALREADY). but well, i bought it blindly based on seeing Rick Rubin's name attached to it. The album is...damn good.

I am amazed that after twenty years, I'm still anxiously awaiting the next albums from some of the bands Paul mentioned.
Pretty sure Dio has one out this year.
I tend to prefer my metal a little on the lighter/classic side. The Maiden/Dio/Motorhead concert @ MSG last year was amazing.
With the help of the internet, I've been exploring the wonderful world of Euro-metal. Lately is been (from light-heavy) : Nightwish, Hammerfall, Power Symphony, GraveDigger

I think BannaOJ knows a lot more about metal than I. All I know came from one strength of materials class.
Does Tool count as metal? Cool, cause I love them.
(I just realized how an engineering background can help people come up with cool band names. Hmmm, have to think about that one. Any ideas, fellow sons of Martha?)

Does Gwar still exist? I used to think they were pretty lame. Nothing more than a gimick. Anyway, the heavymetal groups that I still listen to are metallica, megadeth, and pantera. I also listen to Dream Theater, but they're considered prog rock. They definitely have some metallish tunes though.
Edit to clarify that I only listen to old metallica from Black Album and earlier and only the first 2 Marty Friedman Megadeth albums.

Dream THeater I always thought were indeed Prog-Metal not Prog-Rock. good stuff none the less.
GWAR is/was a gimmick. that was the beauty of it. it was a project by a bunch of Graduate Students as a marketing strategy to see if they could package and sell the most repulsive stage and musical act ever seen. nearly 20 years later they have made a career out of it. they were banned from athens after a show five years ago.

THey had a firebreather. it was at the 40 Watt Club. they, umm, forgot to inform fire department of said activities. they almost burned the place down. they are not welcome back. which is sad. i want to see them again.

wow, I never knew there was a method to the madness. Gwar was fun to watch sometimes. It just got old quick. And I forgot to mention Ozzy. Up till No More Tears. I wouldn't consider him metal now, but his early stuff definitely qualifies.

I didn't realize that metal had survived more than a couple of years after I graduated from high school (1991). I though it died about the time grunge rock hit it big.

I've been on a huge metal kick recently (though I'm still an emo kid at heart). Here's some of my favorites:
In Flames is amazing (at least their earlier stuff is, and their new stuff is decent, just diferent). Their work is full of the greatest melodies in metal. Pick up "Colony", "Lunar Strain","The Jester's Race", "Whoracle" and "Clayman".
Lamb of God is insanely brutal. Think Meshuggah (Ultra thick guitars and crazy time changes) with more technical ability.
Dillinger Escape Plan. Chaotic Jazz metal. Can't listen to them all the time, but those maniacs got some talent.
Shai'Hulud . The In Flames of the Hardcore world. Great melodies, but within the more minimalistic confines of Hardcore. Great Stuff.
Slayer . The epitome of thrash metal. "Reign in Blood" is classic, though my favorite is "Seasons in the Abyss".
Chimaira . Good, solid, metalcore. Nothing too fancy, just good hooks and they know when to bring it heavy and when to lay off a little.
Killswitch Engage . Great metalcore. Their new album is much better than their last (which was pretty good in its own right), the changes between the singing and the screaming seem much less forced and their songs less schitzo because of it.
Shadows Fall . Buy "The Art of the Balance". It's got some heavy Euro-metal leanings (great melodies and solos), but with occasional forays into more brutal hardcore and (slightly) mellower hard rock that makes it a dynamic masterpiece.
Megadeth . Some great songs and guitar work (especially when Marty Friedman was in the band), you just have to get past Mustaine's obnoxious vocals.
Metallica . What metal list is complete without Metallica? "Ride the Lightning", "Master of Puppets", and "...and Justice For All" are classics. The Black Album is good too.
Tool . Not quite metal, but one of my favorite bands.

Does Dream Theater count as metal? I think they're more "progressive rock" than metal, but I'm not an expert in these subgenres. Regardless, they're the coolest band evar.

In Flames leaned into newer stuff a bit more.
A Band i failed to mention before is CAVE IN. imagine a cookie cut hardcore band that started listening to Pink Floyd and carious late 80s metal bands around the same time and you have these guys. they are freaking amazing live. i dont relaly know what else to say about them except that they are a fresh entry in the metal world.
