I have just now finished reading the novelization by Peter David. I like reading the books first - when they're done well they fill in a lot of the implied bits of the movie, and I can still enjoy the movie's "surprises" even if I've already read them - and this one just came out today.
I'm not giving out spoilers, so rest easy. But if the movie has half the stuff in the book it's going to match the first easily. There's a lot that the trailers and commercials haven't hinted at, and a few things that caught me completely off guard.
Damn, I want to see this movie.

Peter David, eh? I've always thought that one of his Star Trek books should be turned into a movie. Maybe I'll have to read it.

Wow, that man has written a LOT of trek novels. Some of which (I am slightly ashamed to say) I have actually red, like, when I was a teenager.

Good question. I think my favorites are Vendetta and Q-Squared. I doubt they'd really fit with canon, though. At the very least, he should write the story for a Trek movie, I think.

I'm proud to say I've read his Trek stuff. He takes a great deal of care to make his stories fit within canon, usually more than, say, the filmmakers did. In some of his books (like Q-Squared) he seems determined to smooth over some of the discrepancies of the original shows.

Hmm. Maybe I shouldn't have said that they wouldn't fit with canon, because, like you said, he actually aims for consistency and tries to smooth out discrepancies. But for some reason, I can't see something like Vendetta becoming a Star Trek movie. Would it be too canonically consistent? Too good? I'm trying to figure it out.

Vendetta works better as a book in my opinion because to make it a movie you'd have to leave too much out. Not necessarily plot, but a lot of the characterizations and inner dialogues that make the plothole-stitching seamless in the book might come off as too pat or contrived in a movie.

As much as I like his regular Trek books, I love his New Frontier series.
Heck, he even made the Hulk plot work in the novelization. Almost. Kinda.

thanks for the post, I had forgotten the book would be out around now. I'll have to pick it up tomorrow, I loved the book for the first movie...I thought it was actually much better done than the movie itself. There were several scenes in the book that really should have been in the movie the last time around, it would have made it much stronger than it was (that being said I loved...and own the spiderman 1 dvd)

This thread is an early contender for best derailment at the next Rackademy awards. It will set a high bar for other derailments to measure up to.
P.S. Alfred Molina is hot. Which is kind of surprising.
