I am sure that tomorrow, I will have a coherent post to place in this thread. At the moment, however, I'm still melting and quietly phoning an order for a Scott Patterson.
Great lines:
"The Town Luke." "One of the women waiting for Aragorn." "THAT was wierd." "That's why so many accountants get married." "Rory, you're the other woman."
and...
"Will you just stand still?"

I'm not home. I had to discuss what happened, so I'm ALMOST home and borrowed the computer. I'm headed home. I'm also a slacker because I didn't go roller-blading, and it's too late now. So now I'm going.
Zal! Someone! Did NO ONE watch Gilmore Girls? I jumped up and down for five minutes and ran to Coccinell's house in order to jump and down with glee with some other people who didn't even watch it. Oh my stars! Did you see the salad look? Who knew I was such a girl? !!!!!

It was good and sad and good...and yeah did I mention sad.

I watched Gilmore Girls a lot about two years ago but hadn't seen it in a while. I was sick tonight, so I just turned on the TV and saw that the season finale was on, so I watched it. I must say, I was very disappointed. The Aragorn line was pretty good, though. Maybe I just was out of the loop on a lot of things, but the Rory/Dean thing seemed VERY out of character for both of them. *shrug*

SO wonderful!!
From the time I started watching the show last year I've been eagerly anticipating Luke and Lorelai to happen. It was so perfect! I got worried when Jason came into the hotel, but all was ok.
(And I'm also ignoring the whole Rory/Dean thing...I hope they take care of it in the fall.)
Oh, but it's just so great!!

I watched it all by my lonesome self and ended up running up and down the stairs after it, looking for my phone. It turns out my friend did not watch it cuz she's studying for a midterm. So, I'm watching it with her tomorrow night.
This episode blew me away. TV shows and movies, especially, bring out the girly me.
sorry, [SPOILERs] Rory/Dean is not so out of character. I'm rationalizing it by thinking that they're both pretty miserable. Rory had stress from Jess, and Dean is married.. That's not very compelling but I'm televisionly gullible. It's hard for me to think negatively of such cool characters. And it's the season finale so they have to show something hooking to next season. Yay for Lorelai and Luke! "Will you just stand still?" was soo cool. :sigh:[/end spoilers]

Luke and Lorelai - wow. Which sounds a lot like Luke and Laura; I wonder if Amy Sherman-Palladino is a GH fan, but just wanted something that was written better and smarter.
On one hand, I am totally glad they finally got together. I was so afraid that Digger was gonna screw the whole deal up for the season finale and then we would need to wait 'til next season. Poor Jason never got things resolved in that finale, did he?
On the other hand, I was kinda hoping that when Luke and Lorelai got together it would be HUGE and explosive like on Moonlighting when Dave and Maddy got together. Although, Moonlighting did go in the toilet after that, though and I don't want that for GG.
The way Lorelai kept knocking things over everytime Luke was around was cool. The episode before the finale, it seemed like Lorelai was more surprised that she was dating Luke rather than she was really into it. The knocking things over touch filled in that gap as did the sequence of the kissing scene (he kisses her first, he steps back and then she takes a step to kiss him). I guess the Kirk thing was just there to end the Luke/Lorelai thing so as not to overshadow the whole Rory/Dean thing.
Wow, Rory's first time. And it was ALL about emotional content for her which seems realistic, not the physical "he just rocked my world" which is more entertainment industry type stuff. And the phone call to Dean's place when Lindsey picks up and Rory can't talk? Such a classic adultery scene that really nails home to Rory what she did.
I liked it! Well scripted!
PS Smallville has nowhere near the quality of GG. There is way too much filler and gimmickry in that show and not enough substance. I don't think OSC could ever rate GG highly. The show is too liberal and portrays a non-nuclear family doing well. But the Kents, OTOH, very nuclear, family values driven.

<<<<<<<SPOILERS, SPOILERS EVERYWHERE>>>>>>
1. Remember Rory's speech at the beginning to Lorelai about dating The Town Luke? She knows what will happen; she's a smart girl about this. She knows what kind of crap she's in.
And with all that, I found Rory's storyline VERY believeable. She's always been a perfect princess beloved by all, and at Yale, she had disasterous boy encounters, things didn't work out for her, everyone else was finding what she was looking for, her best friend at school was having an equally crazy affair with an older man, and she was lonely and single for the first time in her dating life. Even Lorelai, her mom and her rock, was falling for someone who would NOT be fly-by-night-and-L-is-still-Rory's. Did you notice that in her justification speech to Lorelai, she kept mentioning how much Dean loved her, but not how much she loved Dean? At that moment, he had all the qualities of making her feel loved and safe and secure and a princess, while still being a little bit dangerous and off limits enough to be exciting. No one wants a puppy that just looks hurt when you send it away, but Dean grew enough of a backbone to knock hang around after being rejected for Jess and enough mystery from the married bit to be exciting. I figured they'd sleep together from the moment he snubbed her at the diner. That was the look of a girl who'd never had her perfect guy reject her - even at his own bachelor party - and she didn't want to lose it. Dean's her security blanket. That's hard to let go.
Security blanket + security + a little taboo excitement + being 19 and stupid an a little tired of waiting + objections to sex before came from own shyness and reticence rather than a moral stance + dangit, everyone else is happy = VERY believable event and story line. I'm so impressed with ASP's writing.
It's not an admirable action, of course. It's definitely not justified, blahblah. It's a terrible event that will screw up their lives and cause all sorts of havoc. But its great drama. Happy couples and polite rejections of temptation make for happy lives but boring drama.
2. Luke and Lorelai!! I'm downloading the finale right now and praying my computer doesn't hiccup like it always does when I fast forward in WMP to the good parts. Holy cow! That was a really, really great series of kisses. It was perfect. I'm very impressed with Luke (instead of the writer this time). He didn't just back away and not say anything; he was fearless and had self-respect and took action when action was needed. I almost couldn't breathe. Great show!!!
3. This episode may laugh out loud at least four times. It was wonderful. THIS is the finale that should come out on DVD in five days. Holy cow.

I just woke up and watched the Luke/Lorelai scene again. *sigh* SO cute!
I see what you're saying, Katharina, and I'm pretty sure I agree with you. I think right now I'm just a little clouded by my attachment to the characters and the fact that I don't like what they did. It is good drama. And the phone call at the end gave Rory a complete reality check. It really was a great season finale, and I can't believe the fall is so far away!
Posted by esl (Member # 3143) on :
I see it both ways actually. Rory/Dean is out of character but from a slightly different angle it does make sense.
Also thank you very much for clarifying about the ending. I'm really bad at recognizing voices; I thought Rory was calling Lane, ha.
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
I'm displaying serious fangirliness here, but then, this would be the place for it.
I am SO disgusted by Dean. What a loser. Did you catch when Rory said she didn't think it would happen "tonight"? She's been thinking about it. She knew it would happen. Dean is a complete moron - I can't believe he got married to prove to an ex-girlfriend he's over her, and I can't believe he simply ignores his vows now.
I simply love that the perfect Dean is the one who didn't think things through and ended up being the one to do something so wrong, while Jess, while a commitment-phobic pansy, wasn't. This reminded me of when Dean broke up with Rory the first time because she was pining so much over Jess, and when Jess found out she was available, he didn't kiss her right then. Instead, he said to wait for a minute while he went to break up with his current girlfriend. No rationalizations there. But in both cases, Rory barely needed one. I'm so dissapointed in her, but I'm not terribly surprised. She's pretty used to getting what she wants.
And...I actually sympathize with the Dean-is-the-jerk and Jess-did-his-best scenario. The most selfishly I've ever been treated was by someone who had been, you know, The Good One most of his life, so when he did get the impulse to do something not good, he rationalized it away by thinking that because he was a Good Guy, everything he did was good. The self-deception was remarkable. On the other hand, I've been treated by much more respect by someone with whom we did not agree on lifestyles but he still put what would be best for me ahead of what he wanted. He was so touchingly nice and matter-of-fact about it that I didn't realize until then that the attitude of what-I-want-is-by-definition-the-right-thing was both wrong and not inevitable.
Rory did the same justification. Since she trusted Dean, she trusted all of his judgements and choices in this, over her own objections. He's the good guy, right? He wouldn't do it if it wasn't right. It made my heart hurt for her. Oh honey. That's such a bad idea.

Yes, I know. But dang, the delivery was perfect, and that's a perfect description of the way Lorelai scrunched her face, looked off into the distance, half-smiled, and said, "Luke can waltz!"

You know, I haven't watched the last 4-5 episodes. I haven't exactly lost the love, but I haven't been compelled enough by the recent melodrama(s) to make time for it.
At the moment Angel is the only must-watch show on.
Tangent: The WB is continuing to run some re-runs, but I hate that the networks in general are no longer using the summer for re-runs and to burn off episodes of cancelled shows. Most of the new shows I end up watching during the fall season are those I've discovered during the summer. Besides it's the only way (other than tivo) to get around all the dumb counter-programming the networks do.
Forget all the stupid reality shows and cheap dramas. Go ahead and cancel "Wonderfalls" -- but at least show me the rest of the episodes that were produced.

Yah, a Television Without Pity recap isn't quite the same no matter how well done. --- So we all knew Digger was doomed, but I kind of liked the guy. Sure, he and Lorelai were only good for each other in a creepy, hyper kind of way, but I could have seen them helping each other work some issues out.
I like Luke a lot. But I still think that Rory's dad [Chris? I think so.] matches up better with Lorelai.

As far as Smallville goes, I think it just exceeds expectations so much that it seems really good. I have never really liked how it seemed to be the "Kryptonite Created Monster Of The Week" show, but the characterizations are above average for Sci-Fi/Fantasy T.V.
I haven't watched the last season and a half though, so I don't know what's been going on.

Of course, I'll watch almost any sport.
Except auto racing*. And I'll only watch golf if it's a major championship and there are only 9-10 holes left to play and a 'name' player is in contention but not running away from the field.
*there is one auto racing exception -- Le Mans. Not that I ever watch it on TV [is it even broadcast in the U.S.? probably only on satellite]. But it is the one auto race that's cool and means something.

Lawguy: This season has been a little directionless in general. In order to set up the finale, Rory has been miserable at school. Great setup - not so much fun to watch. The best part of most of this season has been the grandparents.
But the last few episodes have been great, and the finale was as nearly a perfect hour of television as I've ever seen.
Posted by UofUlawguy (Member # 5492) on :
I think the last episode I watched with my sis-in-law was when Rory was deciding where to go to school and her grandfather really wanted her to go to Yale. I already liked the actor that plays the grandfather, although I have never known his name, so I agree that the grandparents are a bright spot. And I can see why people are saying the writing is better than other WB shows, at least when it comes to the snappy dialogue. (Sometimes too snappy, though. That can get pretentious.)

You're not the only one. This perplexed me the most:
quote:This is the most realistic treatment of high school that I've seen on television. No, not the superhero stuff -- though that's great, driven by the splendid underlying motif of the damage done by the "meteor rocks" that made Smallville into its own Area 57 (or is that a steak sauce?). All the kids are real -- capable of doing bad stuff and good stuff, and torn by conflicting desires. No Breakfast Club-style stereotypes.
It's not like any high school I've ever seen (except on TV).

I'm floored that on Hatrack, more people aren't watching a show that contains the following dialogue:
Lorelai: "What happened to room four?"
Michel: "Room four is for my friends."
L: "Who are your friends?"
M: "You said I could invite friends, did you not? I did invite friends, and they are in room four, as you said. Thank you. Can we move on?"
<pause>
L: "Michel, Pawpaw and Chinchin are not invited to the inn."
M: <outraged> "Why not?!"
L: "Because they are dogs, Michel."
M: "But they cannot stay at home. They get lonely and eat expensive Italian things."
L: "Then get a chow sitter, because room four is for humans only!"
M: "But you invited Rory!"
L: "Stop comparing your dogs to my kid!"
M: "They are cleaner than she is. They are quieter than she is. I love them as much as you love Rory."
L: "I gave birth to her! I carried her in my body, and nine months and 26 hours later, she came out!"
M: "If I could have given birth to them, then I would have. But I didn't have that choice!"

Ok, so I know I'm really late commenting on this, but I'm sorry because I JUST HAVE TO! I saw this thread right away, but I didn't want to read any of it for fear of spoilers before I watched it. I had to wait to come home from college to watch it because my mom and I always watch this one together, haha I know... Which brings me straight into my first comment: Is this really a girl show? I think it takes a certain degree of appreciation. My dad always makes the effort to watch the shows my mom and I will watch, but frankly he falls asleep in his chair within five minutes. Gilmore Girls, though, he stays attentive throughout it all and laughs along with us. Also, I am not a girl at all in that respect. I really cringe my way through other shows on the WB, but this one focuses on a couple of really strong women who found themselves in an unconventional family situation, of which other people might look down on, and they're thriving! Which is a perfect transition for my next thought
The whole Rory/Dean outcome was mighty painful. I can completely understand Lorelai's getting so upset about it. After all, isn't that how her last meeting with Christopher ended? It must have really hit home for her own daughter to do the same thing. I don't know, maybe I'm too naive but it bothered me. To tell the truth, Rory's character has been agitating me this entire year. She would act pretty snobby and superior to everyone, and I got attached to the young Rory, the innocent-always messing up-doesn't know how to act in social situations Rory. So yes, she was a disappointment to me in this episode, if not all year in small ways.
Truth be told, I hate Dean. There I said it, and now I know I might be ostracized for it, but hey. I am a hard core Jess fan, and Dean's jealousy and ridiculous attitude when it comes to Rory not doing what he wants has really turned me off from him. I find something extremely romantic about two people who are completely wrong for each other changing and trying just to make it work.
And lastly: I have been waiting for Luke and Lorelai since season 1. I even think it was the perfect way for it to happen. All of her past relationships were entered into on such a dramatic scale (ie: Rory's old teacher who was supposed to be so out of the question, and then her father's business partner who had to be kept a secret from her parents) Sometimes it's the ones that are entered into rationally and carefully that are the strongest.
Well, that's my two cents... Just out of curiosity, I think it would be interesting to see what other people who watch this show also enjoy watching? For me, my favorites are Will and Grace, this of course, Six Feet Under, and my favorite from long long ago, Roseanne. What about you guys??

West Wing had the same snappy patter that GG has, but then Aaron Sorkin left and it made me cry. I'm thinking it will get way fewer awards now.

I saw the last half of the season finale last week.
I think I may add Gilmore Girls back to the must-see list -- and it's a much shorter list than it was at this same time last year. Angel was cancelled; I've lost interest in 24; there are no new shows that I'm remotely interested in; Friends is gone (I used to feel guiltly about watching it semi-regularly, but now that I've cast my eyes about at the rest of the sitcom world, wow, Friends actually looks pretty good); and I just can't get in to the West Wing or Alias and am not fond of cop shows [at least not since Homicide].
It's down to the Gilmore Girls, Scrubs and Arrested Development as must sees. And then King of the Hill, the Simpsons, George Lopez Show and Everwood as the second tier -- watch if I have time.
I wish the Gilmore Girls was on at 9 p.m. though. I'd be able to watch it more regularly [of course, then it would conflict with Scrubs. I guess I just can't win].

I didn't realize I would be missing Gilmore Girls when I signed up for my calculus class. I need a Tivo. I'm sure I'll forget to record it multiple times.

So did you see it? What'd you think?

I want to kill Dean. Setting aside what he's doing to HIS WIFE, I can't believe how badly he is hurting Rory. She's an idiot for getting involved, but he's seriously screwing her up. Poor girl. I don't think she's guiltless, but I can feel bad for her.

What time is Gilmore Girls on? I actually had some time to watch TV last night, so I decided to watch it. It wasn't on at 6:00 like it was when I watched it last. Hm. I suppose I could look this up.
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
It comes on at 7:00 here, but I don't know about Mountain Time.

Lorelai: I can't believe you did this! Michel: Oh, yes, you can.
It was all in the delivery.

Something about that show can get me more emotionally involved than I normally get about situations in my own life!! I felt blindingly sad after the show last night. The whole situation seems almost unredeemable, though I trust Amy Sherman-Pallidino to make it all ok. It's tv! I don't watch expecting to experience week-long depression!! I watch hoping to find other people's lives neatly tied up in cute red packages with quaint white bows!! For breaking the mold, I want to strangle the Gilmore Girls and kiss them, all at the same time!!
This is what happens when you have a girl in the band, deal with it!!

Rory and Dean slept together again ( ), Rory realized that Dean hadn't actually left his wife, Dean treats his wife like crap, Richard and Emily have a fight, Emily takes off for Europe for the summer, Rory goes with her, Lorelai's mad, Rory doesn't know about the Luke/Lorelai kiss but Sookie does, Sookie's stoked, and Lorelai and Luke flirt on the phone, confirm that it was a good idea, and Luke has to take off for a few weeks to take care of his sister, but he buys a phone so he can talk to Lorelai.

I loved Emily going out the window without her skirt.
It was just fantastic, the whole episode, though I really wanted rory to stop being mad at her mom, even if it will be really hard.

I forgot about Gilmore Girls until 8:01 when my mom changed the channel. I screamed "GILMORE GIRLS!" and she threw me the remote. I completely missed last season so I was slightly confused about what was going on. Too bad the box set of it isn't already out. (I have to wait until December for season 2. Grr.)
I didn't like Rory so much in this episode. Why is she being so mean to Lorelai? It seems to me like she's projecting her anger at her self at Lorelai instead. I'm glad Lorelai and Luke finally got together.

Taylor, who doesn't believe in soundproof foyers, says he's still standing there. Lorelai stammers that she has to...trail off mid-sentence, as Luke stammers that he's got some...trailing off to do as well.
TWOP makes me laugh. This would be enough for redemption, even if it needed it.

Norman Mailer will guest star on ''Gilmore Girls.''
quote:The literary lion will play himself, a visitor to Lorelai's inn by Gary Susman
The next big celebrity guest star on Gilmore Girls is a fellow who's a tad outside the WB's youthful demographic: author Norman Mailer. USA Today reports that the 81-year-old literary lion will make his TV acting debut by playing himself on an episode airing in about a month. Son Stephen will play a reporter who interviews the writer while he's a guest at Lorelai's (Lauren Graham) inn.
What was it about the show that attracted Mailer (who noted that he wrote a famous book, The Executioner's Song, about killer Gary Gilmore)? "It had taste. It was witty and well put together. It had a certain élan that I liked," Mailer told USA Today. Turns out he also liked the show's trademark overcaffeinated repartée, even improvising some of his own dialogue. Shooting Mailer "was completely intimidating," said executive producer Amy Sherman-Palladino. '"But it was one of those moments where you say, ‘This is why you do this.'"
1. *wriggles happily* That's pretty cool. 2. Next big celebrity guest star? Have they EVER had a celebrity guest star on there?

I only caught the last 3/4 but it was a good episode. I think I'll try and make a greater effort to watch it.
Luke and Lorelei in the diner (the other one) -- how perfect of a scene was that? This might be the first time in the history of TV where the guy and the girl get together and it's still interesting.
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
I thought it was fabulous. "Luke has a Luke's!"
Paris had the very best line of the episode. I love her.
I watched this with Coccinelle, and our differing reactions to Luke's "I've loved you since the day I met you." story were very telling. She about melted, and I (reportedly) got a look of fear on my face and pulled away from the TV. Luke is adorable, but I think he's going to scare the crud out of Lorelai if he hasn't already. On the other hand, she was there for the preparation for that moment and we (the viewers) haven't been, so maybe it didn't freak her out as much as it did me.
I'm glad you liked it, Zal.

They've been flirting for EIGHT years!
I loved Luke: "This is my relationship, not yours, not yours, (points to Lorelai) yours (nods) and NOT yours!"
Talk about telling the town who's in charge of his life!
Posted by katharina (Member # 827) on :
They went from flirting to "I've loved you for eight years, carried a memento of the day we met in my wallet for eight years, and, by the way, I'm planning on us never breaking up and I'm so sure of it that I promise to move away from the town I've lived in all my life and that my family has lived in for generations if we do.
<pause> By the way, you with me?"
Holy CRAP!!!
I'm just saying there's no doubt he makes her weak at the knees and she adores and depends on him, but I have a feeling that rushing or pushing her is not a good idea. She's been saying no to the love her life for twenty years because she was scared of what it would be like to be with him - she can say no to the other love of her life, too.
Added: It is nice to know that there is someone who takes care of Luke as much as he takes care of other people, though. That makes sense.

I'm glad I wasn't the only one disturbed by Luke's sudden admission of his eight-year infatuation with Lorelei. It did seem very creepy to me.
And what's with Luke suddenly talking like Lorelei and every other character on the show? I respected Amy Sherman-Palladino's dialogue writing more because he alone sounded different from everybody else, but it turns out that when he starts to talk, he doesn't. Ah, well.
I thought the whole Paris thing was done pretty well, but I didn't like Luke and Lorelei jumping right into bed on their first date. What happened to two people who have taken eight years to even get to a first date? I don't know . . . I just didn't believe it. It seems that this season, every character has gotten skanky and I don't like it. It's not just the prude in me, either . . . I don't know; I'm just not completely buying it based on what I know of the characters, and when that happens, it's always a bad thing, in my opinion.

Wow! SwiftVet and Florida election reference within two minutes of each other. Now that's fair and balanced.

Can I get a rundown from this week? I fell asleap and missed all but the last fifteen minutes. What happened with Rory and Dean?
Posted by vwiggin (Member # 926) on :
*spoiler*
Dean went to the election rally and apologized to Rory for behaving like an ass. He said the whole moving back with his parents thing was a little harder than he thought.
Rory asked (in a nice way) whether Dean would've left his wife if she did not discovery Rory's letter.
Dean said yes, but with just a tiny bit of noticeable hesitation.
Rory said "great" and smiled, and moved some hair out of her face as she turned away from Dean. I don't think Rory believes Dean, although she really wants to.

This little scene struck me as incredibly odd and dishonest. In the season premiere, Dean told Rory that he didn't know what he'd been thinking when he slept with her. He had a wife and Rory had repeatedly bailed on him. It seems REALLY obvious that he wouldn't have left his wife if she hadn't found the letter. This scene makes me think that the characters were either trying to decieve themselves or the writers were being sloppy. ???
Posted by esl (Member # 3143) on :
You missed the first forty-five minutes? if I'm reading that correctly.
*spoilers* Dean's sharing the car with Lindsay so couldn't make it to Yale to see Rory. Rory drove to Dean's house instead and Dean's mom was not giving them their privacy. Next they try Rory's car but that doesn't work. Rory asks Dean if he wants to go to Jackson's town selectman rally with her and Dean throws a mini-tantrum about throwing stuff into Lindsay's face. Then they make up when Dean goes to the rally. In other news, Jackson challenges Taylor for the town selectman position. Luke makes breakfast for Lorelai at her house but she would rather have it at Luke's. Lane's band (HepAlien?) plays at Jackson's election rally. Jackson wins the election. Lorelai feels sorry for Taylor. Lane tells Zack that she likes him. Lorelai remembers that Luke goes to bed early and doesn't like champagne.

Yikes. Sorry about that. I'm watching the Laker game and didn't read your post correctly.
Posted by esl (Member # 3143) on :
Coccinelle, those're the highlights. Most of it is in order.
Yes, I agree, Amanecer. It felt like Dean and Lindsay were not going to split up before Lindsay found the letter. The roast beef was a very nice touch. They seemed to be getting along really well.
Posted by vwiggin (Member # 926) on :
I also liked how Lane declared her feelings. She looked just like her mom when she said that.
Amanecer, I think the characters are lying to themselves. The writers are playing with fire here. If I begin to hate Rory, the show would be a lot less enjoyable for me.
Posted by Coccinelle (Member # 5832) on :
Thanks for the recap. It's amazing, I figured out most of what happened within the last few minutes.
*No longer feels committed to watch the whole show every week* What a relief!
I agree that the scene seemed dishonest (well the recap at least) Dean didn't act like he had any intention of telling whats-her-face that he'd slept with Rory. Why did Rory ask? I'd like to think that deep down she knows the truth.

I know how you feel. After Rory slept with Dean, I lost all respect for her character. I hoped the writers would deal with this well, but I'm just not seeing it. After four years of pretty faithful watching, I'm thinking about dropping it. I hope they fix this, but I just don't know.

Okay, I just finished it.
I hate the Rory and Dean stuff, except I never thought Rory was perfect so it's kind of understandable - she doesn't know what she's doing. I also didn't like the opening scene with Luke and Lorelai. Lorelai, you have a smoking-gorgeous man in your kitchen fixing you breakfast. Enjoy it.
However, I did like the final scene. For lots of reasons. The episode ended much better than it started.

quote:It's not just that Rory Gilmore (Alexis Bledel), the teenage heroine who, until she left for Yale, lived with her sexy single mom, Lorelai (Lauren Graham), in tiny Stars Hollow, Conn., is an inveterate bookworm, dropping historical and cultural references every other line; the writers of Gilmore Girls, led by creator Amy Sherman-Palladino, actually understand something about the way books function in adolescent life. Literary references are to the women of this show what pop-music references are to the teenage boys of The O.C.: a badge of identity, a cultural currency that symbolizes the young characters' emerging sense of selfhood. Borrowed, traded, or earnestly pressed upon others, books are a way of concretizing the teenager's secret conviction that if only someone could truly understand them, everything would be all right.

Great article. Although I'm disappointed there wasn't a brief mention of Paris dating a novelist.
Here's the thing with Dean -- he's comfortable and dangerous at the same time. Isn't that what the whole last episode was about? Dean knows all the or L and R's habits and customs, their secret language.
Rory isn't brave enough yet for someone more her speed.
Posted by Zalmoxis (Member # 2327) on :
Mediocre episode last night -- by Gilmore Girls standards. Still fairly entertaining in comparison to the rest of the TV-scape.
Sidenote: The Kirk appearance in this episode was fairly routine, but his appearance in the previous episode was one of his best ever [the part where they want more popcorn and he is making out with his girlfriend was hilarious -- as was the whole explanation of the movie choices].
