It is my goal to meet all Hatrackers in the SoCal area. Yet time and again, Damien has thwarted this goal. (He's not the ONLY one. *glare*)

Soooo . . . this thread is to get the SoCallers to a) convince Damien to come to a Shinda, and b) figure out how to provide the necessary transportation.

Damien, being a generous sort, has agreed to a mini-Shinda Monday, May 24. [Big Grin] Downtown L.A., at a Tea Leaf and Coffee Bean. Anyone else who'd like to join us is welcome. [Smile]

Ooops, it's called Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. Oh well, at least I didn't call it Tea Bean & Coffee Leaf this time. [Wink]

Chances are a little slim for me, but even so... do you have a time?

Posted by Damien (Member # 5611) on :

We're meeting about noonish. Corner of 7th and flower. 801 w 7th. Apparently RIGHT at a metro station (where I will be coming from, heh)...

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Ok. Chances are slim, since Mama won't be able to take Superstation with her to work that day. Thus, if I do attend, it will be with a six-month-old in tow. Not impossible, though....

Well, this is what I get for not looking in this thread earlier. I will be in SoCal on Monday. Don't know if I can make it to said shinda, but I'll take the particulars with me, and see if I can work something out. Noonish? That sounds good. I'll be in Buena Park, but a drive isn't out of the question.

Like I said, no promises, and if I can show up, I'll likely have my mother with me. But, we'll see.

My apologies. It wasn't your person I was aiming for. It was your pension. [Eek!]

Posted by littlemissattitude (Member # 4514) on :

Thanks, rivka. As I said, I can't promise anything, but since I will be in reasonable driving distance, I'm going to try to make it. I've tried to get to two other shidae and wasn't able to get there at the last minute. Maybe the third time is the charm? (Ouch. How cliche is that?) At least, I've got the name and address, date and time written on the back of my hotel confirmation, so it will definitely be coming with me on the trip.

Hope to see you Monday.

You're talking an hour, possibly an hour and a half to get from Buena Park to Downtown LA at that time of day. Not that I want to discourage you from attending the mini-Shinda. But that (and the fact that I can't take that long a lunch break) is why I won't be able to make it (working in Fullerton and all).

What IS a shinda?

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

Aww, no Mooselet? But it'll make Pop's life simpler to only have to deal with one kid -- dealing with us SoCal jatraqueros takes a lot out of anyone. [Wink] Yay that I'll get to see Superstation again. And his dad, too. [Big Grin]

quote:
What IS a shinda?
It's one of those weird Californian things. A shinda (plural: shindae) is a gathering of SoCal jatraqueros. There is some debate as to whether gatherings that do not include certain persons are in fact shindae; however, I believe that the majority has decided that they are.

Posted by Papa Moose (Member # 1992) on :

Were I to have both kids, there'd be no way. With just Superstation, it's a slim maybe.

Posted by rivka (Member # 4859) on :

That's reasonable, Pop. I know how hard it is to get anywhere with kidlets in tow. [Smile] Hope you two can make it.

[Roll Eyes] Did you follow the link? Coffee Bean & Tea Leafs in L.A. are kosher -- they will NOT appreciate that particular move.

Then again, very few restaurants appreciate or allow outside food being brought in. But don't worry, they have lots of other stuff on their menu.

Double-checking -- it's over an hour for me to get there, assuming little traffic (not really a given by any stretch). Someone's gonna be there, right? A couple of someones at least? Maybe a few or several or many? And how long will people be staying? I was kinda hoping for a couple hours or so of chatting. I like you people.

I'll be there noon or a bit before (depend on traffic, how many times (and how badly) I get lost, and finding parking). I can stay until about 2. I will be wearing -- um, one sec --

*goes to pick out clothes*

-- a long black skirt and a multicolored blouse (dominant colors: purple, green, brown, yellow).

See ya tomorrow, Damien, Pop! [Big Grin]

Considering that there's a Metro stop right at UCLA, and the coffee shop is also at one, why wouldn't you just take the Metro?

Faster, and no need to find (or pay for) downtown parking.

Details- Superstation is ADORABLE, and Papa Moose made a mess with the creamer. But he cleaned it up... and I didn't have a Ham Sandwich.

Rivka, Papa Moose, and Superstation showed up (and myself, obviously) and we hung out approximately 2 1/2 hours.

Wow, Damien is a good lookin' guy. I'm happily married and I'm a heterosexual male, and I still considered asking him out. No, really -- he was pretty quiet, but eventually opened up a bit. We all had a relatively uneventful couple of hours (though yes, I did make a mess with the half & half, as well as spill a bit of coffee on my shirt), and it was a wonderful time. And Superstation was cheerful pretty much the entire time, though got just the tiniest bit fussy as we were getting ready to leave (he was tired -- fell asleep in his carseat before we got out of the parking lot).

Damien & rivka, you remember how I said I needed to use a bathroom? Well, the one rivka mentioned was in the opposite direction of the parking lot, so I figured I'd just try to make it home. I got in the car and was driving home, and about 15 minutes later decided I needed to go worse than I thought. However, I unbuttoned my jeans thinking that maybe the release in pressure would allow me to make it home.

No.

So I'm starting to be in a bit of pain, and realize I must stop -- only I'm now at a place where I don't know any of the exits, and so can't tell where a stop will result in a bathroom available. Another fifteen minutes go by before I know of an exit where I can find a bathroom (and I was wrong about it, but found one anyway). I park in the shade to keep Superstation cool, and get ready to go in to the gas station to the bathroom. And I'm entirely unable to rebutton my jeans. *sigh* I pulled out my shirt and let it hang down over the jeans, keeping my hand close enough to catch the jeans if they start to fall, and gingerly walk in to the restroom.

Anyway, made it safely, no accidents of any sort. I had a wonderful time, and look forward to seeing rivka again (and possibly Damien?) at the knick-mack-Shinda-wack in two weeks. Anyone considering going -- Damien and I might both bring our guitars and have a jam session, so bring your singing voices.
