So, this sudden lack of school has left me with a sudden burst of creative ideas. I'm trying to get my own design business up and running. My newest plan is to offer original illustrated bookplates.
My first one is a self-portrait, which is maybe a little weird, but I've always wanted to draw myself as an art nouveau chick.
So here it is. Anyone want to place a custom order?

anyone have any constructive criticism?

Wow; I think it looks great!!! I'm not interested in the bookplates right now, but how much would you charge to draw a portrait of my kiddos? I've been wanting to have one done for a long time. From a picture, of course.

um.... 20 bucks? My best work is digital and a little abstracted - I do charcoal drawings and the like but they're not quite professional true-to-life perfection.
You can look at more of my non-digital stuff in one of my landmarks I did here. My digital portfolio is here (you have to let the page load fully before the buttons work).
And thanks

Annie, that is cool. How much do you plan to charge for these bookplates?

Annie, your work is beautiful. If you don't mind, please send your address to my e-mail: nicole@nickellie.com I will start looking through pictures of the kiddos tonight. I thought I'd send you a picture and let you have at it. I really like your style and think that it would be something different and unique. I'm so excited!!

Derrell - I'm thinking a $25.00 design fee plus printing costs, or I could just send the digital file if you want to print them yourself.
Any other questions, feel free to email me - annekemajors@yahoo.com

$25 design fee?
Does it take you less than an hour to do one of these, Annie? Actually, if it take you more than 15 minutes, this is a heck of a deal.
What makes more sense to me:
Come up with 5-10 designs. Set up an e-commerce site or whatever. Make the customization the name only. Figure out printing and shipping costs add those costs, plus your customization and production time and a 15-20% markup (or more) and offer them in packets of 10, 25, 50 and 100.
Offer a unique design option package (must order 50+) that includes a $60-75 design fee in case there are book lovers out there who really, really want a custom design and are willing to pay near-illustrator rates for it.

Annie, I e-mailed you with a list of questions about the bookplates. This is really a cool idea.

When I start my "real business," Zal, I'll do something like that. I decided to go bargain priced for Hatrack friends

Well in that case I suggest all you jatraqueros/as go crazy with the orders. You'll never ever again get an illustrator as good as Annie to do a custom job for you for $25.

Plus, it'll give me tasks to work on all summer and keep me from losing my sanity. Really, it's in everyone's best interest.
