Because you'll freakin' get all your coworkers sick, too! I don't care if it's just a head cold. Stay home and keep your virus to yourself.

Amen, brother! Preach it!

What if it's not contagious, like the Herpes Simplex A virus?

Are you spreading germs all over the Poyfair estate?

Why you should go to work when you're sick: if you're home, celia might call you and tell you long, rambling pointless stories.

Not anymore. We're done babysitting. But don't worry. I made sure to sneeze on everything before we left.

Please, not again!

Did the babysitting instill an overwhelming urge to procreate?

Never mind. Being a newlywed probably does that.

We can't bust head like we used to, so instead we tell long pointless stories that don't go anywhere. Like the time I took the ferry over to Shelbyville, I had an onion on my belt, as was the style at the time...

Jon Boy,

your noble sense of self-sacrifice and concern for others has touched me to the core. You are my inspiration!

I shall call in sick tomorrow for the good of my coworkers.

There is no sacrifice to great for my workmates - even lying in bed, watching TV, playing on the computer and blowing into a hanky now and then to make it look convincing. [Wink]

And how! After changing a few nasty diaper (including one that leaked) and listening to the Wiggles for three days straight, I can't wait to have my own kids!

Actually, in all seriousness, Pat's kid is really cool. A bit of a handful, but a lot of fun.

And celia's stories weren't that bad. I was just tired and doped up on decongestants at the time.

I just got pinkeye, for the first time in my life (don't ask me how), and I had to come to work... I'm a poor boy and I need money! Of course...not being able to see kinda hinders working... Hmmm... I hope nobody uses my keyboard... [Wink]

Hehe... j/k... I bought some wipes so I can rub down everything I touch.

I have to agree with the topic of the thread - a friend of mine caught whooping cough from a coworker - and she had just come back to work from maternity leave. Her daughter had not had that shot yet and caught it - ending up in the hospital.

Some people should know better ...

Of course, sometimes people have no choice because they need the money, don't have enough sick leave, whatever. Putting too many limits on sick leave is a stupid idea because everyone else will get sick and therefore there will be more lost productivity than if the one infected person just stayed home.

Telperion, my sympathies. Pink eye is really unpleasant. I came down with it during my 13th birthday slumber party--had to go to the ER at midnight because they were worried I'd scratched a cornea. Man, it hurt. They gave me antibiotic eyedrops--did you get any??

Posted by Annie (Member # 295) on :

Pink eye?!? Ack! Go home! That's way contagious and too miserable to work with.

Here's my tribute to the American system that requires people to work when they have pink eye just to pay the bills: [Grumble]

Thanks guys! [Smile]

I don't have enough money to go to the doctors, but my mom had it half a year ago and has some extra eyedrops for it. I've been using it and it's getting better. Actually...my eye feels like something is scratching it every time I blink.

I wonder if you'll be able to catch physical viruses over the internet as technology progresses.

I remember I had an infection in my eye at some point. It cleared up really quickly so I never went to the hospital, but nothing beats having pus seem out from behind your eye and waking up to an eye that won't open because it's crusted shut with dried puss.

Mmmmmmm...

celia thinks so. She wouldn't talk to me on AIM earlier without wearing a mask.

Da_Goat, that'll come out right after we get Smellovision...

But before the invention of the Smell-O-Scope. [Wink]

I usually end up coming to work when I'm sick (unless I'm dying) because I work in a very small company in a specific capacity (that usually can't be filled by other people) and I do not get any sick time (so time I'm not at work means less money with which to pay bills). I always try to be very careful to minimize my germ transfers though.

That may also have been due to some of the cleaning agents I unleashed in the lab today.

But you can't be too careful!

In fact, I think we'd all be a lot more comfortable if you weren't on AIM right now. I mean, we don't know how infectios you are and getting you off is probably a lot easier than researching it.

Telperion, for your sake I hope it's ordinary pinkeye. *references his landmark*

On a lighter note, I'm reminded of the time that there were hepatitis B posters up all over the Harding dorms, and someone began putting up posters warning that "hepatitus E" could be transmitted by contact with detached body parts. It was a big help...there were lots of detached body parts on campus in my day.

I heard that it's often more difficult when you're not feeling well.

I actually read an article recently (I think in the WSJ) about how the problem of people coming to work sick actually costs companies more than absenteeism. Not only is the company paying someone full salary when they are not running at full capacity, they also get their coworkers sick (as you mentioned).

Cold medicine does not take away your cold. Only the symptoms. Think of this if you decide to go to work with a cold and think, i'll just take some pills...
I hate people who do this because they infect me and being infected makes me cranky. Once I even nearly passed out from a cold and now owe money from going to the emergency room as a result.
I was a trooper and finished my day at work though.

That is one of the few disadvantages of working at home -- I don't have that excuse to stay home.

Posted by The Cheat (Member # 5204) on :

That was actually something I liked about working at home. If I didn't feel well, I could still try working a few hours without the hassle of going in to work (and possibly infecting my coworkers).
