It doesn't look like anybody posted this, but apparently it was in the news for a month:

Planet-Like Body Discovered at Fringes of Our Solar System

I find it really interesting. I read a lot of Arthur C. Clarke and watch a lot of Discover Channel, so the idea of this Oort Cloud is really interesting to me.

I also find it really cool that in a lot of his short stories, Clarke refers to another planet beyond Pluto that he thought up called Persephone. Well...I think it's cool anyway. [Cool]

That's pretty cool. I guess I don't follow astronomy very well, because I hadn't even heard about half the stuff that article was talking about. However the part about the Oort cloud intrested me...

quote:
The extremely elliptical orbit of Sedna is unlike anything previously seen by astronomers; however, it resembles that of objects predicted to lie in the hypothetical Oort cloud. The cloud is thought to explain the existence of certain comets. It is believed to surround the Sun and extend outward halfway to the star closest to the Sun.
The only place I had heard about Oort clouds before was in the science fiction of Anne McCaffrey...

Boy. Y'all need to read some Charles Sheffield!

What, no mention on Chaeron?
