You think an ad for smilies says something about the thread that it's in? *innocent smile*

On a more serious note, this is really disturbing me. Why does our world revolve so much around consuming things and advertising? I hate it. I want to go live in the woods. I want people to stop making my roadsides ugly with billboards, to stop putting price tags on everything. GO AWAY you stupid crass materialists! Why do I have to now pay out the wazoo for just peace and quiet in my own mind?

I'll bet that if you were willing to spend the money to support this forum, you could arrange to get the ads removed. [Smile]

I totally understand why the ads are there, and they really aren't that bad. I'm just bummed that they have become necessary. And I really don't like the idea of spyware that tries to focus in on your previous patterns so that it's more likely to make a sale. That's just creepy!

I think chocolate strawberries are what get offered when there's no hope of the thread going anywhere.

It doesn't bother me that a program reads what I write in a public forum. GMail, which reads your private email -- that I find creepy.

In this particular instance it's not nearly so intrusive as spyware... it just looks at the words you input (in the search engine) and then decides what ad is something you'd be most interested in. I don't *know* that's what's happening here, but it *is* what happens at Google. It doesn't keep track of personal patterns, but merely says "people who type *this* are most likely to want to see *that*," and pulls ads out accordingly.

I don't find either this or GMail particularly creepy, as long as live people aren't opening up my mail and reading it. Heck, even then I don't suppose I'd be all that bothered by it. *shrug*
