It seems that Hotmail is down. I can't reach www.hotmail.com, and I can't connect to it through Outlook Express. Hobbes also said he was unable to check his mail. Anyone know what's up?

Every once and a while the server gets overloaded. I'm assuming that's what's happening. It better be because I want to check my mail before I leave civilizied society for a week. [Angst] [Wink]

This would explain, however, why my son at home is unable IM me through MSN at the moment -- he uses his Hotmail addres as his MSN ID.

I am unable to access hotmail as well.

I could be getting bashed with a mace right now, and not know it....

At least my cat is safe.

Thanks, I'll try that.

Nope. Didn't work for me....

It'll be up later...

Think it might be a DDoS attack? If nobody's getting in, it doesn't sound exactly like an overloaded server.

Edit: spelling fix

France is kind of down too. Yesterday I managed to enter my account only for it to freeze when I was sending an e-mail... [Mad] Today, I didn't get even that far.

Perhaps this is the end of Internet ?! [Wink]

That's funny, I got to my hotmail acct. just fine...and my MSN messenger is working fine too. Maybe it's a regional problem.

The URL that you typed in is:

www.hotmail.com,

There should be no comma.

This works fine:

www.hotmail.com

Hotmail appears to be working again. At least, I was able to retrieve my new password.

So it is.

I bet it wasn't Hotmail's site at all that was having problems, but various DNS servers throughout the internet. What these DNS servers do is save the internet location of a site and cache it's internet address so that when you type in whateveryourelookingfor.com it points to the correct internet address (often called IP address). Maybe Microsoft moved the location of their servers and the new address didn't propagate to all DNS servers quickly enough, or the DNS servers themselves have experienced a problem. It's happened enough recently with a few of my own ISP's DNS servers, making almost all internet browsing a pain in the rear, even on a broadband connection. It gets worked out after a while.

No, before I even tried to get to Hotmail, I tried to open MSN Messenger, and I got a message saying Hotmail was down. The message also included a link to an MSN page that repeated the fact that Hotmail was down, as of 14:38 today...sorry I didn't save a link.

CNN says its an internal problem at Microsoft. I was able to log in 5 minutes ago.
