I just joined hatrack about a week ago, and since joining I have herd the term "hat crack" at first I thought it was funny that someone could become addicted to a forum. After a week, I now understand, but here is my question, Why is hatrack so addictive? is it just that we have no other way to socialize with our peers, or is it a government conspiracy? Let’s hear some theories and other nonsense comments.

Conspiracy. Definitely, definitely conspiracy.

If you have to ask, then you'll never know.

It's the nicotine. They add it to make you addicted. Like the stuff they spray on top of Doritios.

Posted by J T Stryker (Member # 6300) on :

Thats freaky, i was just thinking about doritios.

I've been doing great.

I've actually been really busy of late as I am singing Javert in Les Miserable.

Stop doing that, Ryan, you're driving me nuts!

Popping in, popping out...are you sticking around or what? [Big Grin]

edit: No OOC please. [Wink]

I guess some Ryan is better than no Ryan.

I'm not addicted. After all, it isn't addiction if you lurk obsessively but refrain from posting.

Incidentally, PSI (re: how did I know your child's name was Czech), you posted once that your daughter's name is Anicka (may have been spelled differently). I, of course, stored that piece of information for later use in the stalker file I'm keeping on you. Don't let that make you nervous, though. I have a stalker file on most Jatraqueros. [Big Grin]

Hi [Big Grin]

It's not that bad, rivka - I don't know your children's names. Of course, I HAVE been pretty busy recently and not reading every thread. [Smile]

And don't worry, PSI, no one on this thread is currently on my "Jatraqueros to destroy, maim or mock mercilessly" list.

*re-checks thread*

Well, at least not rivka, Ela or you. [Embarrassed]

edit: um, I'm so just kidding...I'm not creepy enough to have an actual file on someone. I just remember everything I read. [Smile]

Btw, Lissa, how come you're not on AIM?

Posted by Lissande (Member # 350) on :

For the last couple of months, every time I start up AIM my computer screams in agony and bursts into flames. It's very much on its last legs, poor thing. Next time I see anything resembling a large amount of money I need to get a new one. Preferably one that doesn't run the Windows ME of Death. [Smile]

Otherwise I'd be chatting, though [Big Grin]

I think I've hit rock bottom. Today while I was on hatcrack my son made a 4 wheelin' monster truck course in my kitchen. Out of cinnamon.

[Hat] (_|_) Hat crack, get it? [Evil Laugh]

pooka: *groan* I guess someone had to do it, eh?

I have been wondering myself why I am so addicted. I had some thoughts: Hatrack seems to have the condensced essence of what I enjoy most in human interaction with out many of the things I don't enjoy. Here people are judged by what they have to say, not how they look, dress, act, sound, etc. To some extent, you can look past all the distracting stuff and get to the heart of what is important.

The people drawn here are really cool to begin with. They have developed a compelling culture of their own. The conversations here are just plain fun. Whether they are serious, fascinating, or just fluff, they are highly enjoyable.

Mix it all together, and you get hours upon hours of enriching entertainment. If by sticking around you make some really cool friends that pass from internet acquaintence to RL, then hey, what a bonus!

Oops, forgot that there is some talk about literature too, particulary about the works of some guy named Card. [Razz]

I am developing a theory about Hatrack. In my gifted and talented education classes, I learned that g/t kids need to be with each other. Considering that these folks are a small percentage, that means there aren't a lot of them around. Also, many smart kids develop ways of dealing with their "differences" that keep them hidden. People are afraid of differences because they make others less predictable.

Hatrack is a place where we weirdos and misfits who get pleasure from using our brains can let it all hang out. We crave intellectual discussion, mental play, and connecting with others who are just as "different" as we are. Of course it's addicting! I don't know about you, but it is RARE for me to find people to hang out with and just be myself - flirty, playful, quirky, and smart. I'm usually downplaying one or more aspects of myself so I don't scare people. At Hatrack, I don't have to do that.

Jenny, I completely agree with you, O Wise Head Wench.

I love Hatrack. As far as I'm concerned, I'm never leaving. This is one of my families. [Group Hug]

Well, kat agrees with me. Anyone else? Come on, there's gotta be at least one Hatracker who tells me I'm full of bull!

Posted by ClaudiaTherese (Member # 923) on :

Jenny, you are noble to me. (get it? no-bull [Big Grin] ) You are also exceedingly correct in most every way. [Hat]

No disagreement here -- I think you've nailed it.

Freaks and Geeks.

That's us.

That's the drawing power of any message board. As specialized group that couldn't function in the real world because geographically we're too spread out.

Ain't that the truth! Where else but the internet would I find a large group of people as crazy about guinea pigs as I am?

Really? Where? Cool. [Smile]

Geek, Nerd and Dork have now officially become Gnork, as it covers all three, and it's such a fabulous word.

Hatrack is so addictive because you will never find a group of people with as much personality as you find here.

I haven't ruled out the government having anything to do with it though.

*raises eyebrow*

Posted by J T Stryker (Member # 6300) on :

You know NdRa, hatrack may be how the governmetn finds those "special" people who run everything

Yeah, I think it's the fact that hatrackers tend to be smart, funny, fascinating, and really good hearted too. Worldsavers with huge hearts. The sort of people I love most of all. In real life you might meet one at a time, at long intervals. Here they are all over the place. It's the coolest thing! I don't see ever leaving either. Every time I think about maybe going away, then I worry about whom I might miss. Then I just have to check back and see what's going on.

I played Little Cosette last fall, at my high school! It was so much fun. [Smile]

Even though she DID give the part of the 8-year-old girl to a senior... [Grumble] I hate being short.
