That is kind of interesting, I've never thought about that before.

Hey, now I can use "Hey, I bet you didn't know that a new study in mice suggests female mammals produce eggs after birth," as a pick up line.

Stem cell research should continue if only for that purpose....

Wow, my mom told me this when I learned about reproduction. Could it be my mom was actually right about something???

[Eek!]

Oh, cool! And the potential uses are great.

Just watch, soon they'll determine that we actually CAN grow new nerve cells as adults, too. [Smile]

Actually, rivka, I think they've already realized that. It's startling, isn't it?

I'll see if I can dig up some articles for you.

New cells? Chris Reeve'll be happy . . .

I thought it was just new parts of existing cells, and some of the "support" cells.

Thanks Anne Kate!

Rivka--well...you may be right. I thought, though, that they had discovered that under very limited circumstances new nerve cells were produced, and that they were working to harness that so as to allow for full spinal regeneration. I think I read that they'd managed to reconnect a severed spinal cord in a rat, but that it hadn't regained full mobility for some reason. Does that ring a bell with anybody? I haven't had time to dig for a link.

Yep Rivka, that looks like what I was thinking of (well, that and the related stories in the sidebar).

That's funny, a guy I work with had just mentioned this to me, but couldn't remember where he had read it.

That's amazing news!
